Eurovision Song Contest 2009
Results analysis of the first Eurovision semi final
Here are the results again:

The winners
Some countries maintain their successful string of results in the contest: Turkey, Sweden, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Romania will have appeared in every Eurovision Song Contest final since the introduction of the semi final stage after Saturday. Furthermore, Armenia will have appeared in every final since its first participation in 2006. Portugal and Iceland will appear in the final for the second year in a row after a series of eliminations in previous semi finals. Malta is back in the final after a last place in 2006 and two eliminations in 2007 and 2008 with the artists who brought the country a second place in 2005. Israel and Finland had mixed results in recent years but have reached the final this year.
The losers
Andorra has not reached the final yet again. If Estonia qualifies on Thrusday, Andorra will remain the only country that took part in every semi final stage broadcast so far without ever qualifying. Montengro and the Czech Republic both took part for the third time and did not qualify for the third time. Belarus did not reach the final for the fifth time in six years while Bulgaria was eliminated for the fourth time in five years. Belgium did not reach the final for the fifth year in a row and FYR Macedonia did not proceed for the second time having previously qualified through all of the first four semi finals between 2004 and 2007.
The running order
Once again it is shown that songs that are late in the running order do generally better in the Eurovision Song Contest. Half of the ten songs that qualified were the last five presented on stage. Seven of the ten songs were presented in the second half of the running order. The earliest song that managed to qualify was the Swedish entry at number five, closely followed by Armenia at number six. However, it has to be mentioned that many songs that were late in the running order were widely predicted to reach the final even before the draw was established. Something similar happened in last year's first semi final that saw many late songs qualify while in the second semi final, the opposite was the case.
Performers & Songs
The female singers were far more successful than their male collegues in this semi final. Five of the ten qualifiers are female soloists and they are joined by two female duos and the Portuguese group, who has female lead singer. The only all-male act that made the final are Regina from Bosnia & Herzegovina. Half of the songs are ballads and half of the songs are up-tempo, which predicts a broad variety of entries for Saturday's final.
Predictions
As announced, the ten songs that made the final are the ten that were predicted to qualify in the esctoday.com poll. It is the first time that ten out of ten were predicted right. Non-qualifiers that might come as a surprise for some people are Switzerland and Montenegro, which were tipped to qualify in some betting odds revealed. Montengro was even seen in the top ten of the overall Eurovision Song Contest by some bookmakers.
Geographical note
Despite 100% televoting, Eastern Europe did not dominate this semi final, which is often claimed. Seven of the ten qualifiers are usually considered "Western" in the statistics. The three most "classic" voting blocs showed different results: Only one out of three former Yugoslav countries made the final and one out of two former USSR countries qualified. On the other hand, all three Nordic countries in this semi final (Finland, Sweden, Iceland) reached the final.

The 1 point from Armenia to you took as a bone which can be trough out to the dog's plate.
you all say chorus was better than hadise, she is only sceaming... but she has just explained on the news that this was all about Russian organisation. She said Turkish team didn't want red light as background, but the organizers insisted on red. because of the problems about directors of the broadcasting, she said most of her dances couldn't be seen, there were a lot of sound problems.

@Miguel Olmo,
I AGREE TOTALLY WITH YOUR POINT OF VIEW !!!!
So true!
@Lily Bel,
Sure!
The problem in my country they always choice the wrong song.
La shakra was also better than K.Ryan...For the esc I mean.
The entry of Bosnia seems me overated; it was two years ago much better with Rjeka bez jmena. I don´t understand why is so applauded his "choreography" with this sculptural group that remembers to the sculptures of the socialist realism... The interpretation of the singer is quite awfull.
I like Montenegro´s entry.
GO, SORAYA, GOOOO...!!!

This is the first time that I don't like the serbian entry.
I don't understand this year choise....
But don't worry,I'm sure next year will be better!
It's hard to be worse than my country...
Iceland or Sweden for win !!!!!!!
I don't hope Booooooring songs like Bosnia or the terrible song of Armenia for a good result in the final....
Yohanna and Malena GO GO GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I can see that everybody likes their own country's song AND Iceland! (I'm from Serbia, so I like just Iceland.)
Besides elena's voice which was really good,i loved johanna, iceland was great!!!
ARMENIA Do it this year,please,please,please.
You are the perfect among all participants.
Everybody vote for Armenia, and let's meet Eurovision 2010 in YEREVAN.
Seven Western qualifiers? Que?
Only Malta and Portugal could be considered western if you discount the Viking Block Party which as usual ensured their presence. I'm curious which other Asian nations you considered to be Western European. Perhaps geography has changed since I did my GCSE.
I loved the Armenian song and performance, I hope they do well on Saturday.
Lina, certain countries will always pass to final and always finish in top 10 no matter what due to their diaspora voting. These countries are armenia serbia russia ukraine greece turkey bosnia macedonia (and recently azerbaijan joined this group of shame, which turned ESC into an intolerable catastrophe)
i thing top 10 in the final ( if mentioned countreys from 2 semi pass to the final ) would be like that ( not in order ): Norway, Greece, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Russia, Ukraine, France, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Armenia and United Kingdom or Estonia. I realy doubt if some good songs like Malta's, Iceland and Portugal will be in top 10 , but i hope Ukraine and Russia to stay out from top 10 !
Here in the Uk, we had a big house party for the 1st semi final on tuesday. and in order of the top 5, collectively the countries scored the most points combined (out of 16 people)
ICELAND 12pts,
ARMANENIA 10pts,
SWEDEN 8pts,
PORTUGAL 7pts
ROMANIA 6pts
Good luck to all countries.
from the UNITED KINGDOM
OMG!Andorra,Belgium an Montenegro deserved to qualify? And the juries would vote for them? You are not serious...
we need 50%-50% jury-televote in semis as well! songs that deserved to qualified failed to qualify (montenegro, swiss, andorra, belgium) instead of rubbish songs from armenia turkey romania and boring malta.
Romania was simply CLASSY
Anna Stanciu
this was far from classy!so kitsch!
IMO Romania will finish 14th-18th in the final or even worse...
