Eurovision Song Contest 2009
Results analysis of the second Eurovision semi final
Here are the results again:
The qualifiers are:
| The eliminated countries are:
|
The winners
Two countries definitely maintain their status as successful countries in recent years: Ukraine and Greece will have appeared in every Eurovision Song Contest final since the introduction of the semi final stage after Saturday. Furthermore, Azerbaijan takes part for the second time and qualified for the second time while Croatia will be in the final for the fifth time in six years just like Norway; Moldova will be in the final for the fourth time in five participations. Even more happy might be Estonia: Having taken part every year since 2004, the country qualified for the final for the very first time in the years with semi finals. Therefore, Andorra remains the only country that took part in every semi final stage broadcast so far without ever qualifying. Albania and Denmark will be in the final for the fourth time since 2004 and Lithuania will be in the final for the third time in six years.
The losers
The Netherlands are probably the unluckiest country this year as they were eliminated after the semi final for the fifth year in a row. They are closely followed by Cyprus, who did not make it past the semi final for the fourth year running. Slovenia did not reach the final for the fifth time in six and Poland will not be in the final for the fourth time since 2004. Ireland, the country that has the most victories on its account, did not reach the final for the second year in a row and for the third time in the years with semi finals. Serbia has to suffer from the "curse of last year's host" and will not be in the final for the first time since their debut two years ago. Latvia will not be in the final for the first time since 2004, when they were the hosts of the previous year. Slovakia returned to the contest this year and has already announced to take part again next year, but was not lucky this year. It was the country's fourth participation having previously finished 19th in 1994, 18th in 1996 and 21st in 1998.
The running order
After the first semi final, we said it could be seen that the countries late in the running order did much better. In this second semi final it was even more obvious. Again, seven out of ten qualifiers were performed during the second half of the show. These seven songs were performed in a rown from number 12 to number 18 leaving out only the Netherlands, which performed last. On the other hand, the Croatian song, which was performed first, made the final.
Performers & Songs
In the first semi final, the female artists were far more successful than the male competitors as only one all-male act reached the final (and not a single male solo performer). Tonight for male soloists made it to the final compared to three female soloists. Those acts are joined by the all-female group from Estonia and the two mixed duos from Azerbaijan and Croatia. Half of the songs that qualified are up-tempo songs, the other five songs could be classified ballads or mid-tempo songs.
Predictions
The esctoday.com bigpoll predicted 8/10 countries right to qualify and few surprises could be seen in this semi final. The biggest surprise might be the qualification of Croatia as the country was not a hot favourite poll to qualify neither in the betting odds nor in various prediction polls. Slovakia and Slovenia were seen as likely to qualify by some bookmakers.
Geographical notes
The results are inverse compared to the first semi final: Seven of the ten qualifiers are usually considered "Eastern" in the statistics that mainly face on cultural rather than geographical aspects. If we take a look at the three most classic 'voting blocs' we can see that one out of three competing former Yugoslav countries made the final and that five out of six competing former USSR states made it. Both Nordic countries in this semi final qualified, which means that all five Nordic countries will meet each other in the final for the second year in a row.

moldova and azerbaijan are the best...especially moldova is funny
HELP PORTUGAL WIN - This is all politics,so bring the Eurovision to Lisbon next year!
I am sooooo happy my favourites made it: Norway, Moldova, Estonia and Croatia.
I had 9/10 right in this prediction also. I guessed first that Croatia would pass, but then I swapped with Cyprus. So I was right about all except Croatia since I swapped it at the last minute.
I only wish Ireland, Serbia and Slovenia had qualified instead of Ukraine, Greece and Lithuania. I am glad Poland didn't make it - she sang awfully.
My guess on who got the jury wildcard is either Lithuania or Denmark.
I am very sad for Slovenian Beautiful song.
Why the nices song are eliminate?
and we listen to the Azerbaijani howling in Esc.
this is a bad luck!
Yesterday I wasn't impressed by any other performance but the one of my country! They were a class better than all the rest!
Thank you Ziga, Matjaz, Luka, Samo, Martina, Sandra and of course Mr Babic for this excellent musical masterpiece. Hvala! Najboljsi ste! Slovenija can be really proud to be represented by such high quality musicians.
Is this allowed???
From today's Azerbaijani website called Today dot az:
"We urge you to vote for your country, and agitate others to vote for the Aysel-Arash duo, representing Azerbaijan at this year's Eurovision.
Few doubts that the Aysel and Arash due to represent our country in Eurovision will do it worthily. Successful performance for them is predicted both by the present and the past participants of the contest.
As you know, after the presentation of all the contestants on the Eurovision 2009, there starts a disturbing minute for both the contestants and the audience. The residents of each country can vote for any other country in the last finals, except for their own representatives.
Azerbaijan has a great hope and believes in the victory of Aysel and Arash. In addition, many also realize that this victory could be reached mostly thanks to our compatriots living in various European countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Therefore Day.Az encourages all its readers who live in Western Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Turkey and other European countries to send SMS-messages for Aysel Teymurzade and Arash (on a number, that will be announced during the live broadcast. For each country the number different).
In addition, we urge all our fellow compatriots to advocate for the artists from Azerbaijan in the country where they live. Spare no time and effort, lead campaign for our singers among your Western friends, encourage them to vote for Azerbaijan. Advocate our performers in various international forums. In calling for voting for Aysel and Arash, try to cover the highest possible number of foreigners.
We have no doubt that if each of our fellow countrymen follows our request and voted and encourage others to give their votes for Aysel and Arash, our country will take its place in the Eurovision 2009 contest, and, quite possibly, the next contest will be held in Baku."

A haunting wail in the beginning of song
and then continuous a boring Bollywood ridiculous...

Croatia was the best yesterday. simple, honest and true quality.
my top 5:
1.croatia, 2. france, 3. uk, 4. lithuania, 5. norway
CROATIA made me proud, and i don't care what anyone says here. votes said it all. thanks Europe. b]LIJEPA TENA forever
Burak Kara :
Norway was bad bcs his violin was playback ang he has got a bad show. his show same to national final... Azerbaijan and denmark was great..
My godness...What a stupid thing to say. Everyone has to use pre-recorded background music cause it isn't allowed to play live instruments!!! Gosh, if Alexander could've played live, he sure would. He is an amazing violin player...and btw. for your information, it's Alexander who plays the violin from the background music, and he even plays live (thats why his strings break everytime, cause he gives all he can...)...but they use the pre-recorded background music for every entry. And what if he has the same show as in NF?? Why change a winning performance? Most people haven't seen it before and why should he change it just because the die-hard Esc-fans have seen it before? Some people say the stupides things in here. I thought the purpose of the contest was for people to vote for a song/performance they like the most in their national final and have that song/performance represent their country in ESC. Thats why they vote for it. This isn't a "change-your-performance-the-most-from-the-NF-contest". (!?!?!?!?!)
The authentic Art came from Slovenia this year, a pity, not enough people noticed it. It was a perfect "compromise" between the classical music and pop. I felt the infuence of the great composer Walther Murphy... On facebook.com there is Quatrissimo group. I think, I will join it =)
Ukraine was fabulous! best performance of the night in my opinion. However the best SONG was Azerbaijan. Norway closely following...
Although, I don`t like the Ukrainian song I have to say that performance was good.
Moldova`s performance was very happy, also Netherlads was positive, Shiiine !
Instead of Albania I would have chosen Serbia. Funny song and good performance.
I'm sorry for all the countries that didn't manage to qualify, but the results seem fair this year and mostly what was expected and predicted. EBU can be very happy with these results, let's hope the best act will win in the final. That would mean Paris 2010!
I'm gonna look for a CD of that Quatrissimo. Congratulations SLOVENIA on your outstanding, underestimated composition. I'm looking for more symphonies like this one, who cares about some weird voting. Poland also shouldn't be ashamed of it's entry despite of the result. Lidia presented the power of aesthetics and good taste. Slovakia had nice bass, the melody also was classy.... I hope, like somebody has written here, juries will be present also during the semis.
As much as I would have seen my country in the final, I have to admit De Toppers weren't good enough, at least there song wasn't. I think the result of yesterday was very fair. I am glad that kitsch from Slovenia didn't make it. Ireland was much better then expected. I would have seen them in the final instead of Denmark. I don't think there is much to complain about the qualifiers of the two semis.
MOLDOVA IS THE BEST AND I DONT REALY UNDERSTAND WHY SOME OF YOU THINK THAT MOLDOVA DIDNT DESERVE TO PAS IN FINAL... JUST BECOUSE YOU ONLY SHIT MUSIC...
I AM SORRY FOR POLAND
ANYWAY MOLDOVA IS THE BEST THIS YEAR!
hmmm well im pretty happy with the results! what i thought:
Azeribaijan: good slick performance, aysel wa shot, arash was a bit off tho...
croatia: well what a shock. his voice is still like nails down a chalk board to me but he did give a great performance!
ukraine: love her or hate her the final wouldnt be the same without slutlana! i thought the performance was great personally.. trashy to the unth degree but something that sticks in ur mind.
lithuania: wonderful! i really like sasha, but i wouldve rather it all in lithuanian or the last bt in lithuanian, not bloody russian lol...
Albania: WOW! this was a big shock for me.. didnt rate it that much before but wow, im soo glad she got through!!
moldova: chaotic, messy, ethnic.... I LOVE IT!!!!
denmark: again another i didnt rate before but damn he did sing well
estonia: awesome!!!! vocally brilliant, classy.. go sandra!
norway: heheh im a little biased coz its my fave so i'll leave it at that...
greece: ewww the most overrated, irritating thing this year.. No he couldnt sing, his choreography was soo over the top it was revolting.. sakis u look like a touvlo, ure too old for this sh*t..
oh and yes go ahead, say im jealous,,, quite frankly anyone who says that is missing a chromosome and can suck my ****!
latvia: hated it before but i realy didnt mind this one hehe
ireland: ok vocally she wasnt amazing but i still think sinead deserved to qualify
serbia: haha i liked it... but there were better songs!
poland: gosh that accent....
cyprus: i loved this one, but lets face it, she didnt deliver (as much as i was praying she would)...
slovakia: i really really liked this, the two were great together... but i guess its not something that would appealacross the board...
slovenia: good! EMA corrupt juries got whatthey deserved!! now thats out of my system, they were quite good lol!
hungary: shame, i really liked thisone, but his vocals were terrible
netherlands: oh dear.......
azerbaijan the best in esc.it is great song.gooooooo motherland
Are there truly people on here that ACTUALLY think that Poland should have gone through? Or that Greece gave a good vocal performance? Or that Netherlands and Serbia had a good songs???
I really think its time that people start to get over their country ego, and pay attention to the songs and the acts, not from which country they come.
I predicted 19 out of 20 songs correct - I did not pay any attention to which countries the songs came from. I did not pay any attention to supposed neigbour voting. The only thing I thought about was: Is the song good, and will the masses like it?
The resulst in both semi finals were very fair (and predictable) - the songs most likely to go through (based on the song alone) did!
Did the Danish singer actually sung yesterday…? He was vocally the worst, by difference. Croatia was another disaster. The other finalists, well done and well diserved… Not surprises at all.
The most interesting thing of this Semi FInal were the male dancers of the Ukrainian performance.
EX-YU and Balkan countries ! UNITE one more time and stop this manipulation !!! Show the Europe that no new rule nor jury can stop us winning with right song!!! VOTE BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA!!!! SARAJEVO 2010
Ajmo Slovenija,Hrvatska,BIH,Crna Gora,Makedonija i Srbija!!!!
Pokazimo sta znaci SFRJ
Glasajte za BOSNU jer ima najrealnije sanse da pobedi!!! Veliki Pozdrav Iz Srbije!!!
GOOD LUCK FROM BELGRADE!!!!
Norway, Greece ,Azerbaijahn and Ukraine were always going through
But Slovenia Hungary and Netherlands would have brought more fun to the contest than Croatia, Lithuania or the awful Moldova
Poor Greece - who is it going to give its 12 to this year now that Cyprus are out? Good luck to Portugal, UK, Sweden, Albania and Spain
@Robin Oost
The entry of the Netherlands seemed like a bad joke.....One didn't know whether to laugh or to cry....
Netherlands should be in hte final this time instead of Croatia
Norway was bad bcs his violin was playback ang he has got a bad show. his show same to national final... Azerbaijan and denmark was great..
