Finland: New national selection procedure for 2010

The 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow is not even finished yet, but the Finnish broadcaster YLE has already revealed they will have a new method of selecting their entry for 2010. They are thinking about having an open contest for songwriters as well in addition to the system of invited artists, that has kept the country in Eurovision final four years in a row

Executive producer Merete Manninen told YLE.fi that full details of Finnish selection procedure will be revealed by the Midsummer festivities in late June. She said that after four years it was time completely to review the system, how the country’s entry will be selected. We are thinking amongst other things to have an open contest for songwriters to send in their entries in addition to the invitation system applied since the year 2006.

Finland and Waldo’s People cleared their way to the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest final on Tuesday. Ever since Lordi won in 2006 Finland has been in the Eurovision Song Contest final, after a bad run of positions in the 90’s when the country ended up being relegated every time.

I think, the former system was a little boring. Some artists were invited to and they made songs. Now, it will be open to all. Some expectations are not realized. For example we had this year Kwan, from whom I expected better song.

Waldo knows that the level of competition is high this year.
He hoped that he reaches the finals.
Interview, which was made after the semifinals he says that he has no pressure anymore. Saturday, he just sings and enjoys. His sister Mia were interviewed too. She was very nervous on Tuesday and now she is happy, of course. Mia is also " known " person, she participated in the Finnish Big Brother program.
Waldo on fire again on Saturday !

Sweden/SVT should do the same!
SVT(Sweden) should change the Melodifestavel, I think. They should just allow songs in swedish and samic, reduce the number of entries from 32 to 16. They should keep two semi's and a final, and maybe organize them in the same venue on the same week, like they do in the ESC.

Or else, SVT shoud try to sell it to some commersial broadcaster. Becous the MF is a big commersial succes for now, and it doesn't need government support to survive.

I think with the 'old' method Finland has done very well and they say that if something isn't broken, don't fix it ;)

Anyway what matters now is Waldo to do the best he can tomorrow and get the best result he can.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Waldo (L) (L) (L)

Hopefully the new procedure will produce something as brilliant as in 2008 and this year! :)

I think that it’s a good thing to review the system of selection, not only concerning Finland but also all the other countries… taking part or not! They will see another way to reach the final

This should be good since with the current system you really don't get songs made for ESC. Usually the record companies aren't interested in doing good in the contest but just to get free advertising time for their artists.
So, making Euroviisut an open-contest should give us more songs especially made for ESC and thus also force the invited artists to think about their songs a little more.

If this is to come true then it really is a change in the right direction, although it wouldn't be the change I'd want the most: decent camera-plays. The camera play in Euroviisut is horrible. I don't understand what the director has been thinking and it seems like the cameraman is just zooming in and out all the time or then they are chancing the camera angle every second.. all that makes the show look very restless.
