Patricia puts France back on the map

Eurovision revival in France

The Eurovision Song Contest has struggled to make an impact in France for several years. That all changed last night as Patricia Kaas led the country back into the top ten for the first time since 2002. Viewing figures had flatlined on French television, but last night, that all changed.

France is reporting a huge leap in viewing figures, topping the ratings charts for the night. 5.7million people tuned in to see France return to the left hand side of the Eurovision Song contest scoreboard. That meant a 32.3% television audience share and was the most watched show of the night.

The figure is a huge leap from last year, when less than 4million people tuned in. The Eurovision Song Contest is now set to be one of the highest rating shows of the year for France 3, which averages around 5million viewers at most.

Bruno Berberes, head of the French delegation has worked tirelessly in recent years to attract big names to represent France. Last year, he secured Sebastien Tellier, and in 2007, he organised the French national final which was widely acclaimed as being one of the most musically progressive and daring Eurovision selection shows ever held.

Special thanks to Franck Baillot and Dominique Defaut.

Let's be honest. The song isn't exactly catchy, a lot of people have probably forgotten how it goes now, and the contest was only 4 days ago.

Shame on you Dave Shaw she was brilliant, second only to Jade in terms of voice quality. Her song was better than Jade's

@DAVE SHOW I think that is very natural that the only bad comments about Kaas come from the UK. British people are not used to this type of songs. British also are not open to listen to songs in other languages. They think that the best songs are written only in english...

I have to say that in all honesty Sebastien Tellier did a better job than "what's her name" this year. I'm surprised that she got 1 vote from The UK - I didn't think she would get any from us, simply because we have never heard of her. The song seems to be going nowhere, my girlfriend actually went to the toilet when she started singing.I'm sorry if i have offended the French people but in my opinion I wouldn't have put you in the top 10. Here's hoping you do better next year.

the french result is insulting

Candyman 12 points, I was not saying that Monaco participated last year but since the launch of the digital tv in France, French viewers could watch the ESC on TMC when Monaco did participate. Given the quality of the French commentator (S) at that time it surely reduced France 3's viewing figures.
I do not think the commentators were mocking ALL the participants as you said. They certainly made jokes about some performances but I guess that's probably what part of the audience expects on that night. At least, I found them entertaining, which had not been the case for several years now.

Jean-Christophe Breton

you;re wrong. Monaco has been out of Eurovision since 2007.
Also, the french commentators were mocking all the participants. where did u find respect?

Patricia's perfomance was clearly the best and of course i voted for her. She should have been in top 5. Where the hell were the juries?

Belgium gave her only 1 pt???? Germany 2pts? And Poland nothing?

I was pleasantly surprised to see such an intelligent song end up as high as it did (though I would have loved to see France win!). I really worried that the song was too difficult for the -generally quite dumb!- audience! And Patricia's performance was mesmerizing, easily the strongest and most poignant of the evening. Well done France, keep up the good work, please no more silly entries like Les Fatals Picards and such...!

I'm so happy for France...and UK,...
Finally they, with an amazing song and amazign singer, got a great place :)

When Patricia entered the stage and sang her first lines, it was clear that the audience was shocked. They began clapping and saluting. As if a singer from another planet appeared on the circus named Eurovision. She was way too good for that kind of low level pop festival. If I were her i would have ask a lot of money for PRing that stupid provincial show. Even a single issue of American Idol on our TV has some class at least. Well, wthout assshaking and bimbo back vocal one can not succeed at the circus. The same story we saw in 1997 when Soviet Mega Star Alla Pugacheva was ingored by the juri. What a pity.

@ Gary Green

Your reaction is funny. Patricia was the star of the show! When she came on i bet the UK audience did think what the hell is this and thought its TOO GOOD for ESC. UK vote for same old hip shaking and clothes tearing rubbish each year

I voted for France and i guess many others did too! Her performance will go down as one of the best ever

Next time you watch something as brilliant as Kaas, watch with an open mind. Shaky and boring, what nonsense!

@ gary green

You wanna tell me that Hadise is more popular in UK than Patricia? If you take the audience voting, then Greeks took more points last year in UK than Turkey. Hadise cant be the winner of UK national televote and in the juri's decision she couldnt have been higher than Sakis Rouvas.

@ Duret Bernard

It is hig time big 4 countries stop supporting this circus and withdraw, because now with juri system we have both diaspora voting and corrupted , politically biased juries. There are countries were juri and audience will always vote the same way (Cyp, Gre, Rom, Mol, Aze, Tur). And if UK gives 1 to France and Belgium gives low points to Patricia but 12 to hadise, or 10 to Azerbaijan, the big 4 are not gonna win anytime. It will always be the rotation between Balkan block, Nordic block and the soviet block. The semifinal results are not different from the final ones even if they introduced juri in the final!

Thanks Patricia & Bruno for bringing France back where it belongs - at the top 10 of the ESC. It will be difficult to find another star like Patricia next year but I hope for just another amazing, touching song and performance.

I do not know if the French are satisfied with the results but i am not even though i am not french...
Patricia deserved TOP 3
By the way: SPAIN ONLY 3 POINTS TO FRANCE??? PORTUGAL 0 POINTS??? BELGIUM 1 POINT??? POLAND, UKRAINE AND ROMANIA (where Patricia is quite famous) 0 POINTS???
What went wrong?

It's a pity Patricia didn't have one of her more immediate songs last night as she could have won - something like 'Il me dit que je suis belle'. Nevertheless, hopefully France and Patricia can take the positives from this and enter another great artist next year.

I'm from the UK and I voted for France. Great singer, great entry! I was very glad to see France and the UK sending top entries this year.

I watched the contest on France 3 yesterday. I think this increase in the viewing ratings can be explained by several reasons :
- there was no footbal/rugby match broadcast on a major TV channel yesterday (it was the case the previous years)
- part of the French audience could watch the ESC on the Monegasc television channel (TMC) which was broadcast in all the country for several years but since Monaco did not participate this year, this was no longer a possibility
- the quality of the songs (not only the French one!) improved dramatically from previous years
- Russia managed to create a really appealling show (I mean even if you just wandered on France 3 at some point during the night, the show was really beautiful)
- Our new (unexpected) duo of TV presenters, Julien Courbet and Cyril Hanouna, did a really good job managing to respect every candidate, provide useful information about the contest and making jokes.
- and of course, many gathered to see Patricia's performance which was quite disappointing but mainly understandable due to the circumstances

I hope viewing figures will be even higher next year. That's all up to our 2010 performer and Norway organizing an even better show !

soryy - that should have read

"UK JURY would have placed her higher- no doubt because it was stylised and stood out early on"

Gary Green [45624]

to ernst

UK gave Turkey 12 points but they will have done very well with the televotes because of the Turkish population in UK. It will mean that Turkey probably came mid way with the UK jury - which is fair enough i think.

France - hardly anybody in UK would vote for this - Patricia is unknown in the UK. And frankly. her song and performance were DULL and BORING. Sorry but her voice isn't good either - she just sounded strained and wobbly. Her 1 point will have been gained because the UK just would have placed her higher- no doubt because it was stylised and stood out early on. I hated it. Sorry.

Personally I thought the UK would have given 12 points to Iceland this year.

It's nice to read so much good thinks about Patricia KAAS, and the good job she made. Yesterday, There was a lot of french people watching ESC; but I'm afraid that they are so much disapointed by the result that they won't be there in 2010...WE ARE FADE UP OF DIASPORA AND NEIGHBOURS VOTE...THIS IS SHIT!!!!!!

A great success for France! :D If Patricia had performed towards the end of the show, the result would have been even better. But this is a great achievement nonetheless and hopefully one which will inspire more great French artists to represent glorious France in this contest!
