Raising viewing figures

Germany: 7.36 million people watched the final

7.36 million people in Germany watched the final of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest yesterday. This means that about one million paople more than last year tuned in to follow the programme.

The viewing figures were higher than last year and are back at the level of the 2007 and 2005 Eurovision Song Contests, although no German national final was held this year. The countdown programme starting at 20:15 was followed by 4.05 million people and the programme after the final was watched by 2.72 million people giving a total average of viewers for all three shows of 6.38 million viewers. The Eurovision Song Contest was therefore the most watched programme of the day by a landslide. As always in recent years, it was also more successful than the final of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (Pop Idol), which had been held one week before the Eurovisision Song Contest on channel RTL, although that talent search usually draws far more media attention.

The first semi final, which was only broadcast on the minor speciality channel Phoenix, had only been watched by 260,000 people. However, the market share of 1,0% was still twice as high as the average market share of that channel. Overall, the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest can be seen as success for the broadcasters.

Alex Swings Oscar Sings! represented Germany with the song Miss kiss kiss bang and finished 20th in the final.

Danke Kathrin for your comment. If i was German then yes i would also be looking forward to next year. Stefan Raab and Bundesvision would be ideal. Don't get me wrong Kathrin, your country's songs have been good recently, and you deserve to be placed higher. I wonder what we in the UK will be doing next year. I'm getting worried, we sent a good song this year but next year it will be back to the usual rubbish. It's typical UK.

German entry was nice and catchy so these millions of germans were interested in this year's final. It is sad, that Europe doesn''t like it...

@El Diablo i didnt say that Cyprus deserve to be in the final, i just say how is the situation in ESC general, and Iceland have standar points from Nordic countreys maybe no 12 or 10 but for sure Iceland get 12 points from all Nordic countreys every year :) This year Iceland deserve it so i dont complain for that ;)

@Lina

Oh Lina come one! Cyprus shouldn't withdraw but send some cool shit to the Eurovision. Iceland and Malta don't have any neighbours either, are not guaranteed 12 points from anybody (unlike Cyprus), and they made it to the final. Judging by the semi results, and the final results, it was probably the jury that pushed Chiara down the scoreboard. If she came sixth in the semi, one would have expected her to place around 10-15th.

About Firefly, I must say the song was more than decent. Alas, the singer couldn't deliver. It's whole package which must work honey ... song+singer+performance. Just having a good song doesn't guarantee a good placing.

@ Dave Shaw

Ralph Siegel sent a song to the German ESC officials this year but it wasn't chosen from the jury probably because it wasn't so good. And Siegel has written the song from Montenegro this year and they didn't even reach the final. So I doubt that Siegel is the solution. He is too old fashioned in my opinion. We have better song writers than him. Hopefully with the involvement of Pro Sieben and maybe Stefan Raab, there will be an improvement in the national selection. Pro Sieben is a much better channel than all of the public channels, whose viewers are seldom younger than 50 and often even over 70. They have really no idea how to make an interesting and entertaining music show which also interest young people and with "young" I mean people under 40.

The German people have a huge choice of different musical tastes, just like us here in UK. It is very hard to find a song that appeals to everybody's liking. They tried with country and western in 2006 ( in my opinion the best song. i voted for it) and recently swing. ( which i also like). Maybe you should end the American influence and send a popular German rock band. Or send a powerful ballad. You've got one of the best song writers in Europe. Ask Ralph Siegel to start writing something for Oslo. It's a shame that a lovely talented country like Germany hasn't done as well as they should. Look forward to seeing you in 2010.

Glad to see an increased interest at least, but all this talk about withdrawals saddens me. NO ONE should withdraw!

@ Lina love you all !!
Imo the immigrants or Germans with foreign roots belong to
Germany, too. So what's your problem? And what about your
username :) ?

There is also an article in spiegel online about this.

http://www.spiegel.d(...),1518,625394,00.html

They are saying that the NDR will probably work together with Pro Sieben. I guess that they are trying to engage Stefan Raab are still only speculations. But it would be nice. I hope that they just send the winner of the Bundesvision Song Contest to the ESC. Then we could chosse among 16 different songs in German. That would increase the probability that a song among them is good. In the last years we could only choose among a few songs and most of them were always very bad. It would also have the nice effect, that the Bundesvision Song Contest will get more popular again. Hopefully the different Länder will also then send more often already known singers or groups. And the Bundesvision Song Contest is in a whole just much more entertaining then the ESC national finals on ARD of the past few years.

We should withdraw for some years with Spain...
It's strange that more people talked about Dita then about the song itself, this is sad!!!
I really hope that the broadcast change to a younger oriented channel like RTL, PRO7 (but then there's the problem that they aren't member of the EBU).

There are BIG RUMOURS that NDR wants to ask Stefan Raab for help:

@heidi schierle a lot of countreys must to withdraw , and i hope Cyprus to withdraw next year, since jurys couldnt stop diaspora voting dont make any sense for some countreys to stay. For me only Norway, Iceland and Azerbaijan take the places who deserve, in 4 th place must to be United Kingdom and 5 th place Bosnia ! Turkey take from usual suspence ( Germany, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Belgium and United Kingdom 12 or 10 points , ok the song was good but not good enough to take from that countreys again 12 or 10 points. Ok lets say that Azerbaijan is brother nation with Turkey and Belgium is Hadise 2 countrey and again jurys must to vote the best song nothing more! This year voting was worst than other years , how jurys stop diaspora or brother nations or neighbours voting? Moldova 12 points to Romania and vers ( they r brothe nations ) , Cyprus to Greece 12 points, Turkey to Azerbaijan 12 points and vers ( theyr brother nations ), Andorra 12 points to Spain, Nordic together with Baltic countrey voting each other, ex yugo the same ! I realy hope Cyprus to withdraw next year PLEASEEEEEEEE !!

@Tina
Eurovision is still an AUTHORS competition though less and less people remind that, so it doesn't matter of which heritage the singers are.
Your opinion means that you don't agree with the participations of f.ex. Vicky or Séverine or Anne-Marie or Johnny because they sang for a country they don't hail from.

Hey guys...

i don`t think germany were as bad as 2008 last night
But let me say it like this...the other songs have been better (infact after the first ten songs i knew it won`t become a top 10 ranking...even with Dita)
So confgratulations to Norway and the rest of europe.
Next year we are doing better.

But I would like to say to some people here, thinking everything in germany is bad:

1. Ther was NO Strip show.
Infact Turkey was less dressed and her dancing was much more porn than Ditas show.
Nevertheless I liked Turkeys song (only the voice was to small but maybe she was still ill).

2. 7,36 million people watched eurovision...seemed to me we are not as interested as some of you wanna make us belive (take a look on some earlier posts here in this forum).

3. I just can agree with togravus:
It`s pretty hard for a country, which got the main culturell influence after WW2 from the states not to send "american style songs"...i`t is part of our youngest culture / history...not interesting if you like it or not..it is like it.
And, please apologize, Iceland, UK, Greece, Finland...wasn`t they american? (i liked all these songs too)

4. What is authenticly "GERMAN"...leather trouser and a marching band (i am from Northrine Westfalia and for me this fits more to bavaria...which is only a PART from Germany)
We have over 80 million people, 16 states and a lot of different slangs and music styles...so please can everybody tell me what typical german is (infact Rock isn`t a real German think and is not the kind of music prefered on esc as you can see in Ireland and Swiss, which were both great too!

For me it was a big show and i am really not ashamed of our entry...i think no country should be ashamed after this contest.
See you next year in Oslo (well done Rybak!!!) and now in Germany we are looking forward for the big change our TV has promised (but nobody believes in what NDR says ;).

Best to you all.

yes !!! Europe likes American style Dima Bilan Believ it's 100% American Timbaland style!
Romania and Germany deserved much more, but we don't have so "many" neighbors like the Nordic countries

I think that very few people on this site understand that because of history parts of US culture have become German culture. By now, swing is as much a German genre as it is American. Check your history books and you might understand ...
I am proud that Oscar represented Germany even if only few people around Europe saw and heared its quality.
