Over 3.5 million tune in
Greece: Staggering viewing figures for Eurovision
Over 3.5 million people, 3.631.000 to be exact, tuned in on Saturday night to watch Sakis Rouvas compete in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest final. Viewing figures peaked at 88.8% of all TV viewers during the announcement of the results. During Sakis' performance, viewing figures reached 83.3%, with an average of 81.1%.
According to the AGB, in 2006, when Greece was hosting the contest in Athens, 3.252.000 tuned in to watch the show (82.6%). In 2007 the average was 74.4% and in 2008, with an average of 3.225.000 viewers, it reached a share of 78.8%. 94 out of 100 people who had their TV sets turned on, tuned in to watch the first half hour of the results in 2008, when Greece was leading.
To give a better idea of the popularity of the contest in the country, we should mention that the share for the final of Euro 2004 was 80.6% and the Opening of the Olympic Games 2004 81%.
Another 63.000 people from Greece but also from many countries around the world watched the final online through ERT's official Eurovision site.
For the second semi final, on 14th May, the viewing figures, although lower, were equally impressive as between 10.45 and 10.59 (CET) they reached 42.2%.

@ Whatever,
I didn't think Fairytale was special either but it had a tune that all Europe fell for ( yeah...i know...weird things happen... ) and he also had lot's of luck....TONES OF LUCK. This years's circumstances simply helped him.
Anyway, i hope Sakis getting 7th position ( which is not bad at all ) will teach some idiots to keep their mouths shut and be a bit more modest next time...comments like " Sakis is the winner for this year..." set people off. And totaly uneducated puppets like the " reporters " of Star channel should really retire from Eurovision...they've harmed Sakis with their unprofessional comments...Did they really think that other delagations would not be informed of their mean and childesh comments?
@ Whatever
Sincen you can't see what the majority sees in Fairytale, then you also should know that there're also many people who can't see what you see in This is our night

Paschalis, of course the result has nothing to do with star channel and these 2 annoying reporters(soulioti and tsilipounidakis)but their attitude in Moscow was embarrassing for the greeks in general...The other delegations were referring to the rude greek reportes in general.
When i heard them during the press conference after the 2nd semifinal screaming"sakis, sakis" when Alexander entered,i felt really embarrassed...Of course they weren't alone...there were some greek "eurofans" there with a bad manner.
Erica :-)
None of what you mentioned in you comment apply.
Europe must have temporarily been... DEAFENED, which is why 41 other competitors
were ... OUTSCREAMED by a brat with a fiddle playing a song that was special -- ONLY to him!
This year, there was a ESC ..."W h i n e r".

A channel like Star can't harm the greek delegations, just because I don't think that most people from other countries get as much ESC information as the greeks every year. Can anyone imagine a private channel from Sweden for example having as first news what the Maggira sisters said? lol
We shouldn't blame anyone for the very decent 7th place we got in ESC, the song just wasn't liked that much by the juries and the televoters. And as I said the 7th place is really decent, considering that other countries mostly struggle to get to the final let alone the top 10...
EBU has to bring Star channel to reason cause they have become so rude and mean and harm our delegations there every year!
EBU can't be bothered with every private channel in Europe and the stupid things it says and does.
Unfortunately people sit down and watch it..and of course they never get the right information..it's the worst channel we've ever had in Greece.
Sakis was supposed to end up in top 5 much ahead of Turkey, Azerbaijan or even Norway!
Greece is driving mad with the whole eurovision issue. In the upcoming years people might be sick of it due to the high importance given by media!I wish we were buckling with the other "national" issues as we do with the so called here esc.
And for God's sake.EBU has to bring Star channel to reason cause they have become so rude and mean and harm our delegations there every year!

But I guess in smaller countries it's an even bigger event (In Germany we have other spectcular shows (well sometimes))
Manuel i'm sure you have amazing shows in Germany but we do have shows here in Greece...However, Eurovision seems to boost our patriotic feelings so it's kind of special...
amazing figures! WOW. is greece the country with the highest viewing figures?
imagine one of the Big4 countries had shares like that.
In Germany that'd easily mean over 20-40 million
But I guess in smaller countries it's an even bigger event (In Germany we have other spectcular shows (well sometimes))
How is it spam when I just add a little link after my comments?
Doesn't hurt anyone... (In normal Forum, you always have a signature)

@ Lina
Sometimes the size of the budget is irrelevant...Look at Norway...no video clip, no promotion and they win anyway!
@Erica also a lot of money to spend
I think that having success in esc an amount of many things is needed:
An unforgettable song ( like "fairytale" )
A beautiful voice
An attractive stage presentation
A lot of luck
Those 4 things alone don't mean much...it has to be everything together.
I
Elli Kokinou, but Antzi Samiou would be THE BEST for me!
my take on this is maybe to send Xristina Koletsa. We see again and again the success of a good/decent/ok (lol) pop song with a beautiful female singer
Logically she wouldn't do well with the juries because her voice isn't anything special. On the other hand seeing how Turkey scored very well with the juries with an ethno-pop song and a beautiful singer with just an ok voice, I don't know..but I still believe that the #1 thing that matters in eurovision is the song, not the singer.

Oh nooooooooooooooooooo poor efi

she must survive!!!!!! LOL LOL
anna goula is fudging hilarious!!! but i agree with Paschalis, europe wont get her humour.. i wonder if she would become a national enemy of some countries like silvia tho lol... *wink* greece * couch* LMFAO
as for marsheaux, not a fan and i love electro........ us aussies clearly own electro

matisse seems cool though
oooh and cereal are cool too!!!
ZHTO ELLADA!!
yes Efi lost the plot and tried to suicide
my take on this is maybe to send Xristina Koletsa. We see again and again the success of a good/decent/ok (lol) pop song with a beautiful female singer...
Maybe even Apostolia Zoi...
But I think ERT will chase a big singers again...
Efi Thodi is now recovering from a psychotic episode she had 2 weeks ago.Anna Goula?what is that?I've never heard her and i am greek.
Anna Goula? Well, I didn't get the humour so well. I think Efi Thodi would be better
I hope Greece and Turkey will both send a non-female next year or at least not the ethnic pop songs again. I'd like to see other genres from their music scene.
Anna Goula? lol
She is a fantastic person like Sylvia Night, but I doubt that Europe will get her joke.
I hope for a rock song as well next year. Matisse or Raining Pleasure would be ideal, but I really doubt they will be interested. C Real is a more sensible solution, they have some really good stuff. Rosebleed are perfect as well, I would also like to see them performing.
As for the pop singers like Elli Kokkinou.. NO WAY, they are REALLY BAD especially when they sing live.
