105 million in 2008
Over 122 million tuned in to Eurovision 2009
17 million more viewers mean, in relative terms, an increase of 16%. The Eurovision Song Contest viewing figures peaked especially in several countries, such as France, the Netherlands and Estonia, and in many more there was also significant growth in terms of audience. In general, viewing figures for the Eurovision final on May 16 were double the average rates for a Saturday prime time.
EBU officials have shown their satisfaction upon theviewing figures. Bjørn Erichsen, Eurovision TV Director, stated that “Every year, millions of viewers from Iceland to Azerbaijan watch the Eurovision Song Contest. It is a rare example of a cultural event which brings people across the continent together to celebrate Europe’s diversity".
"The impeccable TV productions of the past years and continuous improvement in the standard of songs, have made it (the Eurovision Song Contest) a unique event and one of the most watched live TV entertainment programmes in the world," said Svante Stockselius, the EBU's Executive Supervisor for the Eurovision Song Contest. "We are confident that the Contest will continue to attract millions of viewers, especially as it develops more and more into an interactive event," he concluded.

Lebanon and Syria can participate in ESC if they want beacuse is EBU members , Lebanon make application for ESC in 2005 but after witdraw beacuse they dont want to show Israel song and that its against EBU rules, so EBU decite to ban Lebanon from ESC for 3 years, Syria dont want to participate
I am sorry but Isreal is not in Europe! Why are Lebanon and Syria not in the Eurovision then???
but in my opinion that number is not too high, Russia have 143 millions people, Turkey 80 millions, Germany 85 millions, UK 70 millions ,also France, Ukraine, Romania, Poland and Belarus have too many millions people , if we want to speak about watchers success we have to speak about 30 millions and up
But is seems that ESC is not so poppular to the big countrey
In Cyprus all roads was empty and when ESC finnish was full of cars and people he he he, like new year eve

Congratulations and gratitude to the Russian ESC organisers and the EBU team! It was fantastic this year!
More than 2 million watch the final in Norway!
@ Kathrin Schmidt
"You have a lot of things to laugh and trash about."
True but I'd say that the majority of singers or groups at this
year's ESC didn't behave like "freaks". Sometimes it's just the
ignorance of some journalists in Germany who hang on to their
prejudices. Btw I watched Lady Gaga's video (No. 1 in Germany)
and it was also -hm- a bit "freaky". So what's the conclusion?
CONGRATULATIONS EUROVISION!!!! THE BEST SHOW IN THE WORLD!!!!
Louis:
I wish it was the same in my country....xD
in malta all the roads where empty..all the restaurants that had no tv where empty.....we love eurovision.........
I don't think eurovision in Norway will have much higher ratings. This year a lot of Russians watched (I think) because it was "their" ESC. Norway doesn't have as many people who can watch lol....

That's why I love Eurovision!!!!!!!!!! More and more people should watch ESC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"A lot of journalists in the German media called the ESC somewhat like a "freakshow"."
As much as I like the ESC, they are not really wrong. Some performances are just ridiculous. I guess that is one of the reasons why a lot of people in Germany watched it. You have a lot of things to laugh and trash about.
Interesting statement by Mr. Svante: "...continuous improvement in the standard of songs." If they keep on improving fiercely by three years no one will stand that satanic quality any longer.
Celebrating "Europe's diversity" is a good thing, but I think it would be even better if we could celebrate Europe's diversity of languages!
@ Malte
I saw that too. That guy from Einslive was awful. He wanted to be funny and to do so he bashed Eurovision. Such a stupid guy. And h said he voted for Belgium *yuck*

@ Martin
I watched Semi 1 on Phoenix (Germany). There were two "experts" who delivered the most arrogant and sophomoric comments on Eurovision I've ever heard. Not much competence around there, it seems.
If u calculate only big 4 population and also Turkey, Romania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus populations the watchers are very low !
A lot of journalists in the German media called the ESC somewhat
like a "freakshow". Glad to see that 122 million people liked to
watch it and more than 7 million people in Germany didn't care
about those comments.
