Belarus president criticises team

President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has expressed his dissatisfaction at the country's preparations for Eurovision 2009 in an unexpected outburst by the head of state.

According to reports, Lukashenko considers it necessary to completely replace the current working team behind Belarus' Eurovision entry, which this year resulted in Petr Elfimov's selection with the song Eyes That Never Lie. The song failed to get through the first semifinal on May 12th, languishing in 13th place overall. Lukashenko pointed out his frustrations over divisions within the team, amongst other things, during a press conference to journalists following his working trip to the Mogilev region of the country.

Belarus has only managed to reach the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest on one occasion since its debut in 2004, when Dmitry Koldun reached 6th place with Work Your Magic at the 2007 contest in Helsinki.

Belarus should not be allowed to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest (or any other european event, for that matter), because it is not a free country.
I really hope Belarus would eventualy become a real democracy, which respect human rights, has free media and an open society.

Until Belarus send something as wonderful as 'Work Your Magic', they will not qualify.

I can understand their frustration. Their song and performance were very good this year and did deserve to qualify.

In actual fact this article is about politics anyway because the most important person in Belarus has criticised their ESC entry ... now that sounds rather politics-related to me! :D

You people are rude, mean and YOU'RE the one making it all into something political. YOU'RE the ones mentioning it out of topic.

Belarus had a good song this year and a good singer.

This article was about ESC so leave politics out of it! Go to a political forum and discuss your opinions on Belarus' human rights and other stuff.

Layla, are we rude because we say bad things about Lukachenko the dictator?

i was sorprised by stage performance and video clip for this song...wich, in fact, I still think is (like SRB and CZ song) the worst one in the competition...
Work Your magic was SOMETHING...
good luck next time Belarus brothers...
I agree that BLR president is the last one as a dictator...but it is a political thing nothing to be connected with music... but unfotunately it was for this purpose...

Everyone has a go at Belarus. I have actually been to Minsk in 2007 and really it is not as bad as everyone thinks. It is very much like Moscow for those who were there last week. People are friendly and not afraid to talk about their government if that's what you wish to talk about. I had a really good time there, though it was February and very very cold. They do have a venue to hold the esc too called the Sports Palace which was right next to my Hotel. It's a nice country really it is, and nobody was really bothered about Lukashenko at all. There are some posters .....but they have McDonalds and a lovely cocktail bar called Bar London!!!!

I really liked that song. It should've qualifed to the final :(
Thanks for the 12 points in the final Belarus :)

when a second-rate tin-pot dictator makes comments about his country's Eurovision participation it is totally appropriate to discuss the political situation in his country.

I hate it when people drag politics and international rivalries into other discussions but in this story it is appropriate and acceptable in my view.

Mr Lukashenko should really know better than to criticise someone that has the courage to represent his country and really do a great job. Petr's song may not have been the best, but he gave a really strong performance that I thought would carry him through to the final. I hope Petr Elfimov feels proud of what he achieved. As for his president he is clearly a bit of a plank.

It's amazing that Lucashenko would even care about Eurovision. As someone said earlier, they need to care more about human rights than a song contest. Same with Israel.

It's always like this: when a country loses, it's the team's fault. Had they won, they'd have been welcomed as heroes. The truth is that no one can predict whether the public will like an entry or not. "Eyes that never lie" was well written and well performed. It had no luck, end of story. I personally like it a lot and I cannot understand why it didn't go through, but such things happen in each and every song contest around the world.
