Due to "lack of interest"

Czech Republic withdraws from Eurovision

Mrs. Kateřina Fričová, program director of the Czech public television CT, has declared today that the central European nation will leave the Eurovision Song Contest after a three-year stay.

The main reason to stop the country's participation that Mrs. Kateřina Fričová mentioned was the lack of interest from the Czech public after three failed attempts.

The CT official also referred to the success that the 2009 Eurovision gathered in neighbouring Slovakia. She admitted that she has no idea why the contest was so successful in the neighbor country, but she added that her colleagues from STV claim that the program offer of Czech television is richer.

The Czech republic debuted in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, being represented by Kabát and Malá dama. The year after, Tereza Kerndlová took the Belgrade stage with the song Have some fun, followed this year by Gypsy.cz and Aven romale. None of them reached the qualification from the semifinals.

@ Ki.var

Maybe you ignore that the new law of publicity for TVE states that sportive and cultural events (where ESC is included) are the only programs that will be allowed to be sponsorized.
So TVE will NEED ESC because it will be one of the few programs where TVE will be able to earn money from private sources.

i think that the tjecks needs to take a break to find a decent song to send

I wouldn't be that sure... You forget that TVE will be finantiated differently since 2010? No publicity, no money... no money, no great investments in a song contest...

@ Ki.var

Your insults give me the reason that you are such a negative and devastated person. If you want to vomit your bilis OK, please choose another place or maybe we can claim to the webmaster for resigning your profile.
And about Spain, while TVE has good ratings forget it! You can cross your fingers or all your body but TVE will keep participating for good of this uniting event (that's not a matter of winners).

Well the contest isn't popular in Czech Republic and that's sad. I know that the public television cannot afford paying for their participations every year and get bad results both in viewing rates + ranking in the contest. I liked the Czech entries in the contest and i'm gutted about the nul pts this year!

Oh no, what a shame if it's true :(
And I agree with some people on here, Kabat were great in 2007 :)

No, Melody would have done a very good result, because it was a song representing Spanish culture and music. Unlike the Shake me song which was a lame attempt at getting some of the ethno-oriented votes.

And Mario... politely I'll say I'll keep on opining whenever I want. Unpolitely, vete a la mierda, amigo.

No, Mario... you're wrong. I cross my fingers for the withdrawal of my own country. I'm embarrased of the results my country gets year by year... when similar songs representing other countries arrive to top10... so, I don't care what Greece, France or Azerbaijan do... but I think my country has no chance at all, whatever you say. If Melody have gone, she'd had been in the bottom as well... that's why I cross my fingers... to see MY COUNTRY withdraw.

haha i'll take your word for it! :D About Deepzone, on TV their performance came across as a bit messy, I think there was too much going on on stage for the cameras to capture and it just didn't translate well to the screen. Like you said i'm sure in the arena it was fantastic because people could see the entire stage and I have to admit, I was still surprised on the night when it didn't qualify :)

I am really tired with supposed fans like Ki.var or the Sinisorsa complaining all day and crossing their fingers for the withdrawals of other countries.
First of all, we and theirselves can't consider them as fans. Why do they waste your time here? Maybe you will be happier in the forum of Hannah Montana!!!
I sinceresly and politely invite you to leave this forum because your posts are brutally useless here and thus you will make a big big favour to mankind, possibly the only one that you could make ever in your devastated lifes.

@ Jonny
I heard it live in Arena last year and believe me it was quite bad! :S After Olta Boka and Paolo Meneguzzi it was actualy funny! lol :D Only good thing is that after Tereza was Ruslan Alehno with "sooo good English accent" :D and "fantastic song" :D LOL
Bigger mistery for me is that Deep Zone feat Balthazar didn't qualify for final coz it was AMAZING performance live!!! :(

Can I just say on the subject of Tereza, I think people say her vocals were alot worse than they actually were. I watched the performance again the other day and whilst her vocals were far from strong, they weren't nearly as bad as alot of people seem to think and she was pretty much in tune. :) Look: http://www.youtube.c(...)feature=channel_page :) And Have some fun isn't a bad song either. The lyrics are bad to say the least but its catchy, fresh, and nice to listen to, and tbh i'm surprised it finished so low :)

That's a little unfair, Layla. it's true that she hasn't got much of a voice, but worse singers have won in the past (remember Buck's Fizz? They won even when they sung flat!), and maybe she does dress like a tart, but that's really not such a bad thing.
Kylie's a wonderful performer despite her tin ear and the way she dresses.

@M For Life M
People usually comment the most on shocking or trashy videos on YouTube. And HQ videos... well - that's all she can offer really, videos showing off her appearance, lol. When her "singing" career fails, she will always have another career ahead of her as a pornstar :P

Why are people talking about certain countries withdrawing? If anything, this years results will encourage more countries to come back to the contest, because they showed a country from anywhere in europe can do well.

Alexander S
"It's not popular in France.
It's not very popular in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands (the ratings and voting there come from the immigrants, and that's hardly a serious interest of the countries).
"

Viewing figures almost doubled in France this year, they're still not amazing but its definitely a good thing. As for the viewers, the broadcaster doesn't care what nationality the viewers are, they just want viewers!! At the end of the day, for most broadcasters eurovision is about viewers, and if the viewers are 100% immigrants it doesn't matter as long as the figures are high. :)

I also think the number of participants will be a bit lower than 40.

@Billy
It's not popular in France.
It's not very popular in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands (the ratings and voting there come from the immigrants, and that's hardly a serious interest of the countries).
It's rather not very popular in Hungary, Poland and possibly Switzerland.

@Lina
I don't even see the number 40 next year, talk about 37-38...

Billy Bates: The story about Big Brother is a little bit different. BB made here a TV Nova, TV with bad TV programs and shows, without quality etc. At the same time was broadcast at TV Prima reality show VyVolení (Vile Valog in Hungarian), it is like Big Brother but a little bit different and for me much more better. Czech Big Brother was a real s h i t, VyVolení was totaly amazing, and half of republic watched it every day, TV Prima had the best results in history and BB had really bad TV ratings. VyVolení had here 3 seasons, it is only about TV's and their abilities. We had here 3 seasons of Czech Idol, one X-Factor, Moment of Truth, Survivor and many other reality show with perfect TV ratings. We are not unique, only a bit different. Czechs love sport, football and ice hockey, coz we are very succesfull there, in music Czechs prefer rock, rock bands are on the 1st positions in all charts, so pop contest like ESC is for typical Czechs something not interesting. It is the main reason, but small reason, why ESC had here so bad TV ratings. But with good promo and propagation, it can be here succesfull too and ESC can have good ratings. But never perfect ratings, coz Czechs love sport, rock and beer. And pop contest is not our favourite show. (But I love ESC ofc =D)

its seems that participation countreys will never pass the number of 43 :S Who is next? Andorra maybe ? And i realy realy doubt if Austria return this year, so again participation ESC 2010 countreys will be 43 or 42, and if Slovakia dont do whell in ESC 2010 i thing will not going to see that countrey in ESC 2011 :S

Billy Bates [60016]

Well maybe it would be a good idea if the only countries which compete are the ones where ESC is popular. After all, the word pop is just an abbreviation of popular. People should like it without the need for official support from the state. It would be great if all the competing countries were enthusiastic, and then we wouldn't have presenters like Terry Wogan who every year kept on saying how rubbish it was. Which countries do you think it is unpopular in? I always thought it was unpopular in Britain because everyone there says they hate it, but it gets very good ratings there. It's a bit like porn - people love it but are too embarrassed to admit it!

Alexander S. [46270]

There are *a lot* of European countries, especially in Central and West Europe, where ESC is not popular at all, hardly anyone watches it and media don't report anything, yet it's still running. It's only the broadcaster taking the decision for participation, not the viewers, not the musicians or critics. Unlike commercial broadcasters, public broadcasters don't need to have high ratings every time, so the argument with low figures is as flat as a pancake. Public broadcasters also have social and cultural responsibilites, one of which is promotion of the country's culture. That's why I don't think CT made the right decision. If we all agree with them, then we should also agree that about 5-10 more countries should withdraw due to bad ratings and lack of interest.

Personally, I am sad to hear the news about the Czech Republic leaving Eurovision. If it was not for Eurovision, I would never have known about a band called Kabat. Their song Mala Dama was my absolute favourite in Helsinki 2007, and I was hugely disappointed when Kabat finished last ( despite me and my friends voting like crazy for them and ending up with astronomical phone bills ). I have been a fan of Kabat ever since. This I think is Eurovision at its best: it brings people together through music. Thank you Czech Republic, whatever your decision will be, thank you for original entries during yo ur three years in ESC.
