Luxembourg considers return to the Eurovision Song Contest

According to media reports, Steve Schmit, manager of RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg, considers Luxembourg's return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010. The country has not been taking part in the competition since 1993.

Smitt told the website wort.lu that after a very long time, they had a meeting with the EBU and the broadcaster considers submitting an entry in 2010, although any decision has yet to be made. The biggest issue appear to be the expenses considering the small budget of the broadcaster. The final decision has to be taken until December.

Luxembourg was one of the seven countries to take part in the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Over the years, the small country won the contest on five occassions and produced international hit songs like Poupée de cire, poupée de son by France Gall (1965) and Après toi by Vicky Leandros (1972), Parlez-vous français by Baccara (1978) and L'amour est bleu (1967). Based on victories, Luxembourg is the second most successful country in the contest following Ireland and sharing its position with France and the United Kingdom (although the latter both had to share one of their victories). After a series of low results, Luxembourg did not return to the contest after the 1993 edition. Their last entry to date was Donne-moi une chance by Modern Times, which finished 20th in a field of 25 contestants:

Just one mistake? :P

Oh if Luxembourg returns I'll be so happy. Good luck! I hope they won't try that in-and-out technique.

@ Lina
And we will participate in Kyev, where only 12 countries wil be, so you can't say we are not interested in JESC!

@ Lina
That's not true we participated in Limassol!!!! And our Maja Mazic was soo good there, I loved her song!! :) (L)
And maybe they paid that much, but after that they don't do anything to lead good Serbian singers and songwriters to Beovizija!! :( :(
I can't stand that!!! :@ :( :@ :( If next year will be same I will be so angry and sad! :@ :( nad maybe as you said earlier it is better to withdraew then!! :( :( :( But also there is another problem, some countris always send good songs and don't do well - POLAND (my favourite ESC country)!
* Lina mark that - I don't pay attention only only for TUR, AZE and B&H!!! :D

and btw after Serbias ESC winning Marija in one of her interviews says that Serbia pay 500.000 euros for her song promotion , fees to EBU etc. And 500.000 euros is not a low number and also Serbias one and last participation to JESC was in 2006 , one year before to win :)

@Marco money is everything, Cyprus Goverment dont give too much money to CyBC about EBU contests, so CyBC must divise that money in 2. So the budget for ESC is very low, thats why everybody seems that CyBC dont care about ESC and make poor National finals and poor songs promotions. A countrey like Cyprus must tried hard to pass to the final and take good place so money is very importand. @Mario Mir thank you very much for your value informations :) slowly slowly Luxembourgian puzzle completeness :P

@ Lina, Keith and others

The problem about RTL membership is this: RTL (under CLT company) is an active member of EBU, that's right, BUT it's not a public broadcaster since 1994, now is a private one (I think that was the fact Mr. Erichsen referred to) and ESC rules don't allow private broadcasters to participate in ESC (in JESC it's allowed, so Swedish broadcaster TV4 can do it).
Well, that's a technical problem (Oiko reported it) that both parts are wishing to solve. In fact, EBU rules should allow RTL to participate considering there is no public broadcaster in Luxembourg, but EBU is trying to making an appropriated formula for this case (because if not, other private TVs like TV4 could argue this precedent in the future for trying to "steal" the ESC rights from public broadcasters). This formula will also apply to 1FLTV (another private TV with no public broadcaster in its country), allowing them to represent Liechtenstein when its application will be approved by EBU .

@Keith thank u very much !!!! yes is that article !!!! did recently i say to you that i love u too much :P (kiss) he he he ;) And dont call Stella bacuse since the end of ESC 2009 i didnt saw any article from her :P Usuall Stella make articles after november :P and @Marco_for_ life, nobody guaranty that if one countrey withdraw for 1 - 2 years that is going to come back with very good song, for me the problem is JESC , if one countrey participate in JESC and ESC and maybe in EDC the budget for EBU conserts share in 3 pieces so Broadcasters dont have enough money for the mane EBU Contest ( ESC ), and that is one reason who some countreys who dont belong to some blocks almost always failure to passing to ESC final . If for exable Cyprus withdraw from JESC the budget who CyBC give for that contest will go to ESC budget . And i agree..is very diffucalt for Cyprus to withdraw from ESC and for sure Cyprus is not going to go to Belarus in 2010 and i m very happy about that ! ( not beacuse of Belarus but beacuse of that silly JESC ) :P And also JESC countreys now is 12 so only the first 2 places are good places, that contest even dont have top 5...LOL. If u remember i say it before one year that Cyprus last JESC will be in Ukraine ,and this is beacuse Cyprus host last year JESC and is not good after the hosting to withdraw :P Personal i see Malta, Sweden, Netherlands and Belgium to withdraw from JESC 2010, if not all of them for sure 2 -3 of that countries, so JESC 2010 will be the last JESC :P

@ Jonny
Maybe it is not bad sometimes to withdraw for one or two years, like Hungary used to do, or Czech Republic now! They can come back with better song and we all hope for them to come back, that's more interesting! I will never forget how I liked returning entry from Hungary in 2005 - NOX "Forogj vilag" Of course not like Slovakia to go and then not to return for ages, but 1 or 2 years is quite OK If you are not so sucesfull for few years in a row! But I also think CYP won't withdraw from ESC, if it is to choose between JESC and ESC it will be JESC!!

@Lina: I believe this is the article you were looking for:
http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/12899
According to this interview, director of Eurovision TV Bjorn Erichsen said that "Luxembourg is a slightly different story, as their TV station is not an EBU Member anymore." Either mr Erichsen doesn't know the members of his own organisation or this interview was bogus. Care to explain, Stella?

Today the new president of CyBC ( Cyprus TV ) make an official statement that Cyprus is going to withdraw from ESC and JESC ( or from one of that 2 contests ) in 2011. For this year CyBC cant make any withdrawing beacuse former precident sign already the budgets for that 2 contests . :S

I got the impression from recent years that the Luxembourgish broadcaster simply is not interested in Eurovision. It felt it didn't have a chance and wouldn't be worth the fee.

Now that the new voting system is in place and we've seen how much fairer it was in 2009, I think the broadcaster is having second thoughts...

i m not insist if RTL is active EBU member on not, but i want to ask @Markus Klier @Barry or any other moderator to find that interview if it possible.

i remember last year one article in ESCtoday with an interview with President of EBU about the countries who is going to participate in ESC2009 and i remember very whell that he say that EBU tried hard to bring back Georgia ( that interview was on december or november ) , Italy, Austria and Monaco , also EBU push San Marino to take part in ESC2009 but for Luxembourg things is very complicated beacuse is not EBU active member since 1994.

Yeah Daniel is right Luxembourg is EBU member of course!!!!
Maybe Jean-Fran篩s DOMINIQUE mixed it with Liechtenstein which isn't member of EBU yet, but Liechtenstein and its only broadcaster 1FLTV is filling in application to join EBU. and when they join they wil participate in ESC!!! :D YAY!!!
