Phil Bosco confirms

Monaco will not take part in Oslo

During an interview with eurovision-info.net, Phil Bosco, head of the Monegasque delegation, has confirmed that Monaco will not return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010. He claims financial reasons as the government refuses to support the participation anymore.

Monaco withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest after 1979 and did not return until 2004. Having been eliminated in the semi final three years in a row, the country did not return in 2007. The only victory to date came in 1971, when Séverine won with Un banc, un arbre, une rue. However, Monaco remains the only country that won the contest once but has never hosted it.

We survived 27 years without Monaco, I'm sure we'll survive another 27 without them again.

Good news that Czech Republic have withdrawn too as they entered a load of sh*t each year.

This would be sad news if Monaco had made a real effort in the years 2004-2006. But apart from their song in 2005, which was musically quite good, their entries were too contrieved, amateuristic and "false" to make any impact.

In 2004 they entered a song about saving the planet because the environment was one of Prince Albert's main concerns. (Maybe he should have sung it himself?) And in 2006 they tried desperately to be "exotic" because Mr. Bosco thought you had to be very visual to qualify for the final.

There was no true musicality or artistic creativity behind any of those two songs. In fact, Monaco's participations were only "advertisment" or "promotion" for something or someone.

As a "back-up" for France, Monaco gave many good songs to Europe during their first period of participation. But since 1979, both Europe and the ESC have changed considerably, and Monaco doesn't seem to have a place in either one anymore. In fact, it's not a "real" country, and it has no real music industry.

The withdrawal of the Czech republic (and possibly Hungary) are much worse, because they are real countries with real music industries that should get the chance to present themselves to Europe.

@Eurotale yes this is one bad thing for big 4, they pay many fees to EBU and after they dont have money for theyr songs promotion :S

@ Lina
I think Spain and Germany spend less money than those two countries in song promotion(Turkey and Russia) because they on the other hand also have to go togheter and pay 40 % of the total amount of an Eurovision edition each year :O

@Eurotale they do not have money but they spend thousands dollars every year for theyr songs , do u know how much Russia TV spend for Dima Bilan ? 600.000 euros ! Also Turk tv every year spend huge amount for song promotion etc , they are poor channels but they spend too much money ! I m sure that Spain ad Germany tv's spend less from that 2 countries.

Also Andorra is withdrawing in 2010!! :'(
I hope Luxembourg, San Marino, Italy and Austria are coming back in 2010.
And Andorra and Czech Republic will maybe come back in 2011.
Also Liechtenstein and Qatar announced their interesent in Eurovision so maybe will see them in 2010 or 2011.
And maybe Monaco is coming back in 2011. I HOPE SO.

@ Lina
TVE does certainly have a stronger economic budget than Channel One Russia and TRT(!) which I've heard are one of the smallest channels in Turkey..they do not have money. If TRT had money, I think they rather would've changed their television technology to increase more viewers as they totally have an oldfashioned image!

Lina
You have totally missed the point, the Big 4 pay the most by the BROADCASTER, not by the COUNTRY, there is a big difference between the two, maybe when the Russian broadcaster etc. pay more or equal to those of the Big 4, may they scrap the idea, or let Russia join...

It's a shame to see Monaco miss out again :( I adored all their entries since they made their return, even though some were sung badly. However Tout De Moi was fantastic and was performed brilliantly and was severely underrated...

I can totally see why they don't want to enter, it's not like Monaco will attract bigger French stars to sing for them, and they don't have the money to do so. Also the popularity I would think would be terribly low in Monaco, I wouldn't see why they would watch it. It just seems to me, I be be wrong, that Monaco doesn't have a cultural sense of "We are Monaco and proud to be" I don't mean to say that they should be arrogant, but I dunno how to explain it, they seem to feel they aren't really a country, If you get me, so that's why I feel they don't feel the need to enter such contests as they don't have anything to sort of offer... I dunno :D I love Monaco, and I will wait for the day when they return, even if it means waiting an awful amount :D

@ Lina
Hmm, but huge population doesn't mean its country is rich.. in Russia, there are very many poor people because corruption among the government representatives is very common. But I kinda agree, maybe Turkey and Russia shouldpay a little bit more than they do now since they succeed a lot these days :) But not pay the same amount as the big 4, it's a bit impossible.

@Eurotale ok, but Russia and Turkey must pay same money like big 4 , both countreys have very good economical market and also huge number of population and also that 2 countreys are always in G7 meetings so they r no so poor do u agree? :)

Eurotale - [59455]
Fri 11 Sep 2009 15:06:49

France, Spain, UK and Germany pay more because they have a large economic market.

Eurotale - [59455]
Fri 11 Sep 2009 15:05:29

That depends on the economic resources, Lina. How come you say Romania should pay like big 4 because of population?? Romania is one of the poorest countries in Europe! And Poland??

Lina !! [56410]
Fri 11 Sep 2009 13:06:06

i thing big countreys like : Turkey, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Romania must paid similar or same fees like big 4 , especialy Russia, Turkey and Ukraine who have more population than some big 4 countreys, and i dont care if they r always in final.

If EBU really wants Monaco and Luxembourg back, they will lower their fees..

let's sign a petition

Well Latvia weren't going to participate in 2009 for financial reasons and they did in the end... The EBU seems keener and keener to get as many countries in the ESC as possible so I guess they will offer Monaco some kind of deal.

Let's see: Latvia pulled out because of financial reasons. What happened? The EBU lowered their fee. So, surprise, surprise: two countries already have said that they would like to enter Oslo 2010 but can't afford it.

@Jean-François, I agree. It's such a pity not everyone understands it (take Italy for example!!!).

TMC and Our Highness the Prince Albert don’t understand the Eurovision Song Contest’s message… Each year is the same situation with TMC. I don't understand why Monaco never takes part to the Eurovision... All small states of Europe make an effort to participate sometime (even if they have a small budget and if they don’t win). As I already said, the aim of this TV program is not only "a stupid contest" where songs are unchained ones behind the others, all the European countries must take part without exception to show at which point we are linked and all brothers, to share this unique moment of the year.

"Phil Bosco, head of the Monegasque delegation" ...?

What delegation? It doesn't exist anymore. Phil Bosco is just a Frenchman who wanted to be granted citizenship in Monaco by achieving ESC success for the country. He has nothing to do with Monaco or Télé Monte-Carlo anymore.

"He claims financial reasons" ...?

TMC can take part in the ESC if they wanted to. As a very small braodcaster of a very small country, they wouldn't have to pay much.

But Phil Bosco knows very well that TMC gave him only three chances to reach the final: 2004, 2005 and 2006. And he failed each time. TMC told him from the start that if Monaco didn't reach the final after three attempts, they would not take part anymore, to avoid further embarassments.

If TCM got someone professional to organise their participation, Monaco would have a good chance of qualifying and do well in the final.
