The winning song

Is it true? was the Icelandic entry in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest performed by Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir, who competed under her stage name Yohanna. The song was written by Óskar Páll Sveinsson, Chris Neil and Tinatin Japaridze. It won the first semi final and finished second in the grand final.

Jóhanna was born in Denmark, but her family moved to Reykjavik when she was two years old. Having successfully taken part in a singing competition, she entered a music school for children. Her talent was spotted early and she released her first album when she was only ten years old. The record turned out to be a success and a second album followed in 2001. Her last album for a few years, which included a collection of Christmas songs, was released in 2003 and she then took a break from the music business. After years of training, in 2008 the singer launched her fourth album Butterflies and Elvis, which was a collaboration with British songwriter Lee Horrocks.

How the voting took place

The wining song was chosen in a "BigPoll" style voting. The voters were able to arrange the songs from  1-24 and based on those results and where they were voting from, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points were given per country. Votes to the own country were not counted. Eventually, a four-digit number of people have voted in the poll.

How the finalists were chosen

  1. In the first round, the best song of each country was chosen. San Marino and Slovakia both only had one song taking part in this decade so those two were directly qualified for the second round. Having been submitted by the Serbian broadcaster, the 2004 entry from Serbia & Montenegro was added to the list of Serbia while the 2005 entry was added to the list of Montenegro.
  2. The 46 songs that reach the second round were allocated in two semi finals. A poll was held, where every reader can choose his or her favourite song. The top eleven of each semi final went forward to the grand final. A twelfth song for each semi final was chosen by an esctoday.com jury. The jury consisted of 15 members and each member could rate all songs with 1-5 points.

Strange contest

Romania 2006 - Mihai Traistariu / Tornero deserved 1st place.
And where is Norway 2009 ... record breaking winner ?

I think those results reflect more the age of the average ESC today voter here than anything else! where is 2000, 2001 at least or some of the best songs from 2002? better option would be a ESC song of all time, or has that already been done? (apart from that stupid "Congratulations" show on TV a few years ago)

Israel 2005 was so boring. Nothing new or original at all. Standard euroballad clichés. She sang well, looked hot. But it's not enough in ESC. Firstly, you need a good song...

This decade has much better songs from "Is it true".E.g. "On top of the world","Once in a lifetime","The image of you","Il faut du temps","Runaway","A chaque pas" and others. In fact, only Estonia and Norway deserve to be in top-5.Instead of Iceland,Serbia and Ukraine in top-5 should be Sweden,France and Belgium/Greece/Hungary.

@Daniel how many people make reactions in ESCtoday that season? about 50 , ok lets say that voter number is more than 50 but do u thing that is more than 100 voters? Also maybe some voters have 2-3 profiles so they vote 3 times, its not something unusual to see users in that site with many profiles :P

dear people,
This is a complete complex political festival. Why do we will do with difficulty? this is a type of inquiry where is it well for? I have been disappointed in esctoday that them that them a type panel keep. This is no more festival, but more which voorzet themselves craziest, most stupid, backward and most ridiculous. Why you to this so much money want spend? I say to this but nevertheless hou I secretly somewhere in me of esc.

Abdul

It seems that there were votes from 38 countries, so the idea that there were only 50 voters seems extremely unlikely.

Total points = 2204
Each country gives 58 points (1-8 + 10 + 12)
2204 / 58 = 38 countries

I'm so glad my country's song came second!
And Iceland No 1 is also very cool, although I can't still realise why we gave 0 points to "Is it true" during the 2009 final...
That song is excellent, especially the performance and stage design of the icelandic entry during the ESC final...
Anyway, Estonia in the 3rd position is a very big surprise and I'm very glad, 'cause that song is really very good!
As for the UK - it definetly didn't deserve last position...

I really dont understand the voting here and how from rating songs from 1 - 24 gave these results. Maybe they cane clarify.

Anyway, glad Iceland came up on top. Don't understand how the UK came last - i rated it highly.

The UK last ??? Estonia 3th ?? Ukraine and the Ani's silicone 4th ?? Finland the second last. Have people forget that Lordi has been the most international sucess of the ESC in this decade ??? Well, the taste of eurofans near kills the ESC, thanks god that the televoting is only the 50%

Really good that Estonia ended 3rd with Urban Symphony which is, in my opinion, at least 2nd after Serbia!
For more information about Urban Symphony you can access http://www.urbansymphony.eu :)
