Poll conducted by RTL 4

86% of the Dutch people wish Eurovision withdrawal

RTL 4, a commercial television station in the Netherlands has conducted a poll regarding the country's poor results at the most recent editions of the Eurovision Song Contest. A total number of 500 people participated and the results are not very optimistic: 86% of the questioned people would agree with a Eurovision withdrawal.

It seems that more and more countries are willing to withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest 2010. The Netherlands is the latest nation where the idea of quitting Europe’s most beloved show invaded its citizens, according to a poll organized by RTL 4, a popular commercial television station in the country.

Based on a swatch of 500 Dutch citizens, the poll revealed that 86% of the questioned people would agree with a possible Eurovision withdrawal as they declare themselves unsatisfied with the poor results of the Netherlands.

The questionnaire was conducted for a special TV show based on the public's opinion and puts TROS, the Eurovision national broadcaster, into a very uncomfortable situation, as they didn't announced any plans for Oslo.

For the last 5 years, The Netherlands failed to qualify for the big final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Their last result is a disappointing 17th place out of 19 participating countries in the second semi final of the 2009 edition.

If we would have selected better songs, maybe we would have gotten further. I'm Dutch and I can say that a lot of people DON'T want to withdraw BECAUSE OF poor results, but because they think its a circus that costs a lot of money.
We all know that we haven't been sending in great songs, so it can hardly be the reason we want to withdraw, otherwise we're just bad losers.
Select quality music, which we've really got actually, and we'll get higher in the end. This is pissing on something, just so we can piss on it.

besides.... since when is a poll of 500 people representative.
RTL is known for controversial polls.

@michael tsoukas, this isn't a poll about whether Dutch people think the Netherlands deserved better. It's about people's opinion about the Dutch participation. Whether the contest is still relevant for the Netherlands. In fact nobody complains about the Dutch results, simply because the majority of the people don't care. For the majority of the people the contest is as relevant as the worldcup curling or cricket.

Yup. I hope they don't withdraw, especially with the new system that's going to be used at the semifinals.

I don't really care where he is from, it's such a nasty thing to say.

I remember back in the 90's when the greek songs failed to enter the Top10...We were angry, furious with the "bad" countries that didn't vote for us and we thought that Greece should withdraw - as a matter of fact we did that in 2000...I believe that crying like big dutch babies won't help. C'mon people..Do u really think that songs and acts like Tremble and Troopers deserved a spot in the finals?????I don't think so...Maybe if they see the contest seriously and not like a travesti, they will get some really good results. The last great dutch entry i loved was back in 1998...

@Keith, good one.....

@Stockholm calling,

What I wanted to say is that Richard's remaark is a typical little girl/boy remark...typical for a lot of fans over here. They only see 3 countries Greece, Turkey and Greece..... I think his remark was horrible and if I would be Dutch I would be very much insulted.... that's all. I don't know where he's from, but if we would say the same thing of his country, it would have been war.

I meant Keith Timmons, not Thomas... sorry for that

Koen Verheyden [47343]

keith Thomas: EXACTLY!!

True, the song choices of Netherlands may have been poor the last years, but then again there are other countries that send mediocre songs too, but they reach top 10 placing with it.

So, to summarise: Netherlands shouldn't complain that there entries didn't do good, cause they were not good, but they have every right to complain about the unfairness of the contest when poor entries like Turkey 2009 and Greece 2007, 2008 en 2009 can get top 10 placings.

maybe they should learn from other countries and send someone with some credibility or talent

Perhaps they should learn from the exquisite taste, talent and credibility of the Greeks: The heartfelt Yassou Maria with its Nobel Prize winning deep lyrics which so deservedly went to number 7; the tasteful performance of Sakis Rouvas which had the executives over at Versace and Prada gasping for breath after his classy yet subtle sexual innuendo; or perhaps little miss innocent herself, the talented Kalomira, whose pitch perfect vocals put Kiri Te Kanawa, Enya and Aretha Franklin to shame. Needless to say they all deserved their Top 10 positions, not because they were Greek but because they were so utterly talented and credible! The rest of Europe was left in awe at this immense display of credibility and talent; we had no choice but to vote like mad.

If the Dutch want out - good. I'm saying this because the selection of their songs have been outrageously bad over those 5 years.
Consider -
Treble - terrible, classless drible.
The Toppers - Stupid selection of people and awful song
Hind - while the song was god the performance was amateur performance and lacking anything worthy.
Edsilia - class act; poor song not correct for ESC.
Glenis Grace - good performer and song that should have made the final.

so maybe they should learn from other countries and send someone with some credibility or talent.

I hope they stay, I nearly always enjoy the dutch entry. They have an even stronger chance with a good song this year given that juries will be participating in the semis as well...

It's no wonder they never reach the final with the trashy entries they've sent the last years. Start sending real songs, and stop complaining. Welcome to Oslo.

if this poll was made in Israel it would even be 96% people who will wish to see Israel out.
Israeils always saying this contest is the most stupid contest Israel takes part in. even when we have good results.
me as a Eurovision fan, have to admit that since 1993 my intrest in the contest is less from patriotic reasons and more becose of the songs and the show it self. but.... i am a fan. rest of Israelis even dont like the songs and the show.
no one here talks about Eurovision the day after or the day before. sometimes people are even suprized when they hear that Eurovision "was last evening".
thats also explain why Eurovision is broadcast from the low raiting tv chanel. chanel 1 of IBA only old people watch this chanel and usuly for the news.

Knowing Richard M's comment history, I am sure he was not joking.

Gees people, have a sence of humor. I am sure Richard was just joking about wanting Holand out of Eurovision. i mean, that joke was really asking for it :)

I think he was just being sarcastic, which can not be understood when reading letter on black and white

Axel
What's "typical girlish" about Richard's comment :)

And of course I want The Netherlands to remain in ESC :D

Oh gosh, crisis in the Netherlands
Maribelle moves to Spain and the 'Gaykrant' had a similar poll and 69% is also against participation in the contest. (source:eurosong.be)

During the week of the contest the semi finals are always a popular subject on school (to talk about in the breaks or sometimes even with a teacher). So it does kinda live during the contest week but afterwards nobody really cares and can only complain.

But despite this poll, the Netherlands had this year the biggest eurovision party with half of the artists from this years eurovision in Amsterdam. It was great and a very popular event. (I was there). If these things can happen in the Netherlands, I think there is still enough support.

Wow! known people are strenger case! They speak without to rest but nonstop insult ... They think insult is a talent! I wonder! Need to be polite! Even with 50/50.... the televoting will always be strong enough even if don't take part that countries are Turkey, Armenia, Greece, Russia etc.... And again countries are if send songs like Petr Elfimov "Eyes That Never Lie" , The Toppers "Shine" , Gipsy.cz "Aven Romale" etc... don't give them even a punto juries or televote at all.

ALIBI x [52480]
Wed 4 Nov 2009 13:25:27

and i dont blame them.

until something drastic is done about the televoting, a country like the netherlands will never see the light again even if they send a masterpiece.

Well it's not going to be any better the next couple of years I think with the TROS. It would be good for the TROS and the people from the Netherlands to see these reactions here only to give them a hint of reality.

Axel Kearns [47152]

I agree with ws, Richard M.... what a horrible childish typical girlish thing to say...... Netherlands was was of the 7 original countries, they are there from the beginning. You could just show some respect my friend. Absolutely disgusting....

I don't think anyone but the Dutch would be affacted by this tobe honest. This year's entry was as pisspoor as you could possibly get without putting a singing labrador on stage.

I hope The Netherlands will stay
