Still deciding on selection format

Belgian decision due next month

Belgian Flemish broadcaster VRT, responsible for Belgium's 2010 Eurovision Song Contest entry has told esctoday.com's partner website Belgovision.com that they are close to completing their planning for how they will select their song for the competition in Oslo. As reported in September, the broadcaster is not keen to follow the multi-week series format it has used in recent years.

VRT has been consulting various representatives within the music industry about the best way to select the Belgian candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo. "The intensive exploration exercise that our people have held in recent months, is coming to an end," Björn Verdoodt, Head of Communications of VRT's first channel Eén, informed www.belgovision.com.

"But for sure there is no final decision on the Eurovision Song Contest and how we'll go to Oslo yet," Björn Verdoodt adds. The decision phase is nearing however. "I foresee a big chance that the management of Eén will come out with more news before mid-December. Until then, any messages on decisions or dates of press conferences remain premature and speculative, I fear."

Belgium finished in 2nd place at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest, but have never qualified for the Eurovision Song Contest final since the introduction of semi finals.

I agree that any country can get a good placing.

BUT

I also believe that there are countries that can NOT get a bad placing, no matter how bad the song is, they'll always get high points thanx to diaspora and neighbours.

That is why i believe that the contest is NOT fair.

"there were two semifinals and 20 places to give; they had a good draw and in semifinals sung at the end."

Good draw or not, Portugal finished 2nd in their semi final in 2008, which says to me that regardless of their draw they were gonna qualify. And in 2009 they were a comfortable 25 points away from the 10th placed country, which was FYROM and given that FYROM has alot more neighbours and a pretty similar draw, the fact that Portugal beat them comfortably says something.

Look, its very easy to complain, moan and rant on about how unfair the contest is, but just look at it and ask, is the contest actually THAT unfair? Because believe me, it really isn't! Good songs do well and the fact that the top 2 were Norway followed by Iceland, and that two of the Big 4 were in the top 10 says it all to be honest is proof enough for me!

@ Thorazin

Portugal was able to qualify not only because the songs were good indeed but also because: there were two semifinals and 20 places to give; they had a good draw and in semifinals sung at the end. Portugal 2008 was absolutely the best song (written by a Croatian, with Balkan ballads sound) and was overcome by Azerbaijan!!!!!!

@ Thorazin
I totally agree with you.. !

If Finland won.. any country can win !
( Even Andorra )

"that's why I suggested to ask Hadise once again to represent Belgium next year.... Let her sing the same song and I can already tell you now that she won't pass the semi......"

I beg to differ. If Kate Ryan can come 12th with what was, let's face it, a pretty average song and a slightly dodgy performance, Belgium have nothing to worry about. I've said it a million times before, if Portugal can qualify two years in a row, why can't Belgium qualify? If the U.K can finish 5th, France 8th, and Norway can win, Belgium can qualify pretty easily, they just need to send the right song.

@Asko,

you're spot on mate..... that's why I suggested to ask Hadise once again to represent Belgium next year.... Let her sing the same song and I can already tell you now that she won't pass the semi......I can't see al her lovely Turkish diaspora friends, vote for her, not singing for Turkey.... What a joke !

I really thought that Belgium would withdraw sooner or later. Kate Ryan - even with a bad performance - deserved to get to the final in 2006 much much more than any Eastern country, and I really liked Ishtar too in 2008. But it's true that nations like Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Andorra never could lean on "political" vote. 50/50 in the semifinals too might change something, but only if VRT will invest on big names and "modern" pop songs. Maybe an Armenian- or Greek- or Turkish born singer would help a little too...

Choose a professional artist for Christ's sake! Natalia would be a good choice but of course there are tens of decent singers in Belgium. No more stupid entries like 2007,2008 AND 2009

Well, internal didn't work wonders for Belgium either, so NF are more fun.

I adored Ishtar and I liked the song this year too, even if both were rather weak live vocally.

I just hope they send an equally great song next year, but someone better live and please - never send Kate Ryan again! Ew :(

'Je t'adore' and 'Sunomi' were both good songs, and my personal favourites from Belgium in the 00's

Even though Je T'adore can't compare to how good 2003 was :)
I want to see some Yodeling, Jesc Belgium = Win :PP

The article is either plain wrong, or someone accidentally phrased wrong. Belgium was in the 2004 final (first year with a semi-final)...but they did automatically qualify. So even though they haven't actually qualified from a semi-final, they have qualified for the final since they were introduced.

I found it odd, as I thought Andorra was the only country to not make the final since 2004

Actually the Flemish put a lot of effort in Eurovision. Their best result ever still is a mere 7th place in 1977.

Belgium like the Netherlands should put in more effort in Eurovision just like why they do in the Junior version. If they did that, I am sure they would get a least a decent result.

Belgium are usually great in Eurovision but 'Copycat' was a complete disaster.

Hope they'll be in the finals really soon!! 'Je t'adore', 'Love Power' and 'O Julissi' all should have been in the finals.

Best of luck Belgium!!! :)

Well 2009 was a complete disaster for Belgium, although deservedly so IMO. Let's hope that they come up with something good for 2010 :D
