Two semifinals with 12 songs
Portugal holds National Final on March 6th
The process of selecting the song that will represent Portugal at the 2010 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will consist of various steps:
- Submission of candidacies till mid January;
- Selection of 30 to 35 songs by a jury to be put online for voting (the voting will last for a week);
- The top 24 songs of the web voting will compete in two semifinals with 12 songs each;
- From semifinals 6 songs will go through to the final via 100% televote;
- The winning song in the final will be chosen using the 50/50 system (televote and jury).
The final details and the regulations of Festival da Canção 2010 will be released next week. RTP has decided to allow foreign composers and lyricists to take part as long as the song is presented entirely in Portuguese. The singer or group will also have to be Portuguese.
This comes as an innovation to the process used in recent years. José Poaires, Head of Delegation, commented on that saying: "We had a good example with Senhora do Mar" and added "the song was composed by a Croatian author and it wasn't less 'Portuguese' for that".
In 2008, RTP invited ten music prdoducers who were responsible for picking the authors of the song no matter the nationality, but in 2009 the regulations stated that only national citizens could enter the competition.
The three shows will take place in the same week, between the 2nd and 6th March. The venue chosen is one of the biggest in Portugal. Campo Pequeno can hold up to ten thousand spectators. It was converted into a modern concert room a few years ago.
The jury that will select the songs will be appointed by RTP. The voting process online will be similar to the one used this year but will last no longer than a week.
In Moscow, Portugal was represented by the group Flor-de-Lis singing Todas as ruas do amor. They qualified in 8th place to the final where they ranked 15th with 57 points.

@Zanic Night
How do u know that?
Kenan Ö
If only western countries voted in the 2007 contest Serbia still would have won, and Ukraine still came 2nd. lol..
The Balkan block just granted Serbia a larger winning bracket
@Marko
How can u say that?
Aren't u one of the members, who wants a 'full-house'?
If this year Portugal won't have a good result (from 1.-10. place, even top 5) I think they should withdraw from ESC!!!
Jury and televoters don't vote for Portugal even when they send AMAZING song!!!
@Zanic Night
I agree with u, a victory for Portugal seems impossible, because it has just one neighbour and it hasn't got any diaspora! Serbia wouldn't win also, if the Serbian diaspora wouldn't be high and if it hadn't so many neighbours!
Maybe some people will say this is harsh but Portugal will never win Eurovision singing in Portugeese, 'Lady of the Sea' would have been in the top 5 if sung in english as many people can connect with the song. But in Portugeese It was just another song with a nice tune, a good singer but meaningless lyrics.
In 2007 Serbia sent an amazing ballad the deserved to win hands down, With ot without lyrics. If Portugal sent a song like that they could win but I doubt that, it just would seem too far fetched.
In the 00's Portugal was in my top 10 I think one time, and in the 90's I think 2 times. where as Countries like Ukraine, Russia and Greece are always appearing in my top 10's and its nothing to to with disaporra or block voting. these countries just try to win harder and in the 00's they all suceeded. Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, The UK and some other countries need to start trying hard for the new decade.. the countries all deserve a shot at winning again
dunno why but i didnt like portuguese entry 2008 but this year it was in my top 10 send another great song like this year portugal please
Portugal's first victory must be really close, i really have that feeling. I agree with Layla, in the last couple of years Portugal have become one of my favourites, even though I loved some earlier entries (85, 94, 96, 98, 03).
Lisbon would be fanatastic venue for ESC. bet even Italy could be tempted back hehe.
Good luck to Portugal in Oslo..
Hey that system looks great! Hope we send another great song next year
Portugal should win soon - as long as they send another good song of course. They have unfortunately never been among my favourites in ESC context, but in the last two years they have become complete opposite to me = among the best.
I agree with Knut. A victory to Portugal would be very well deserved. Good luck!
Good Luck Portugal for 2010
The past two years' songs from Portugal have been great and I hope this will continue in 2010. It's tough for Portugal in this contest; with so many points going to neighbours and diasporas, Portugal really loses out.That was so well demonstrated last year:
Senhora do mar - great song, exceptional performance, 13th place
Qele qele - trashy song, awful performance, 4th place
At least 50/50 reduces the effect a bit.
I would LOVE for Portugal to be the winner of 2010. That would be so well deserved!
Great news, 3 shows, big arena, for sure some great songs too.
Go Portugal ESC 2010 first victory.
Hope they will sent a beautiful woman like Sabrina, and of course a great song like 'Danca Comigo' again!
After he last two years Portugal is one of my favourite countries and I hope for a great song. I'd love Portugal to win. We haven't been in a Western country that isn't Scadinavian for 12 years!
good this will help portugal to get another great sont like the ones he has sent in recent years... 2 semi finals and one final is perfect and give the people more time to vote and more options too... 50/50 televote jury is also good cause this will manage to portugal get o good sont to norway just see yhe example of 2009 if it wasnt the jury we wodent have flor de lis in moscow we would have luciana abreu
and the fact of foreigen composers and lirycs with maybe help portugal geting a good song and who knows a good result lets thake the exemple of 2008 a great singer a great song and lyrics but a foreign composer in this case croatian they dont have the result that they deserved in that year but they recived 7 pts from croatia on semifinal and 4 (think) on final... and that i think it wasent for the song but for the composer... a great one by the way... so good news from portugal
I hope for another great song like in 2008 & 2009. Good Luck Portugal !!!
