Where is ROMANIA? Nul nominations? And U nominate Cyprus, Andorra??? Turkey - Best Female???? For what?!?!?!?!? For not singing, and her male backing vocal singing instead of her at the chorus??? Most traditional Europop song: Shine (Netherlands)????? Was that better than "The Balkan Girls"? I think this site should be objective, but I see it isn't... B*st*rds.....

I think the "overrating" of the UK in the Jury-Years has to do much more with the Language than with Politics. Ireland & Malta did well when they sang in English, too. Last Week I discovered an old Video from the ESC 1993 & I can´t believe Maltas boring Song got 8th while beautifull, but less understandable Songs from Denmark, Turkey, Iceland, Croatia or Israel failed.
The same with French singing Countries: French was with France, Monaco, Luxembourg & often Belgium & Switzerland an overwhelming Language, too. That´s the only Reason, why 21 Swiss Entries out of 43 (between 1956 & 1998) were sung in French, while only 20% of the Swiss speak it. It really hurted me, when I whatched another old Video from 1980 & the Comentator said "The Swiss Entry Cinéma is originally in German...but today sung in French".
But back to Topic: Of Course, Politics where a Point, too, but not that big I think. Maybe it´s only because I understand the Lyrics, or Patriotism, but I feel Germany was sometimes really underrated...& our only winning Song (while we are the only Country that participated every 54 Years) is about Peace. I remember my Dad telling me, that Nicoles Victory in 1983 was something like a Message "after so many Years, we are again somebody in the World".

Goodnight Togravus next time explain to me what is this Homme de lettres in you occupation ;-)

Angelic (back from brushing my teeth)

I am not in a position to explain the success of UK entries in the old days but am only in a position to give an opinion on the points awarded by German juries. And yes, when it comes to points from Germany I am utterly convinced that the fact that the UK stood for everything old Germany wasn't (modern, tolerant, democratic ...) had an (once again: unconscious) influence on German juries' inclination to award the UK high points. (And again: Most of the UK's song were above average and deserved those points anyway.)

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Thu 3 Dec 2009 01:08:26

Togravus said smth else but as expected you extremely failed to get his point......................And yes you still follow me, but I am not surprised, you know how I evaluate your attitude ;-)

adarvus ceterum [32383]
Thu 3 Dec 2009 00:48:29

Dino

Yes, and swing was a big thing in the good old days of Berlin in the 20s and early 30s. The nazis of course banned swing from German clubs. Consequently, people took this tradition up after the war in the hope to create a democratic and tolerant Germany. And German Western Clubs, where they played country music, were among the few organisations where resistance against the nazis prevailed throughout the darkest years of our history. That's why I love Texas Lightning's ESC entry so much.

Goodnight!

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Thu 3 Dec 2009 00:39:28

You make Togravus but I was speaking about democracy. I already know that jazz music is quite popoluar in Germany so I was not wondering about your 2006 and 2008 entries.

Howver, with your other comment you merely proved my perceptions rearding how juries used to vote durinf 70s and 60s. We have to face that ESC has been alwas politically biased. For example theres is a logical explanation why Germany rushed to host the seocnd edition of the contest. And what about the so many entries with deep political meaning etc.

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Thu 3 Dec 2009 00:32:42

Unnatural not............but in some extend juries has not been unbiased.

adarvus ceterum [32383]
Thu 3 Dec 2009 00:31:35

Angelic & Dino

Well, there probably isn't enough space in a humble ESC comment to comprehensively prove my point but I am still convinced that our past (unconsciously) had an influence on what our juries liked in the old days.

I guess it is very hard to understand if you don't live in Germany. A related point is that a lot of ESC members criticised Germany for sending Swing or Country music to ESC (it's American, it's inauthentic etc.). If you consider the influence of the USA on German post WW2 identity however, it is quite natural for us to send these genres. In fact, they are as authentically German as a Balkan Ballad is for Serbia or a Fado for Portugal. Since German popular culture was abused by nazi propaganda, we had to find new forms of popular culture after the war and imported American genres. After more than 60 years, those genres have become as much German as they are American.

Do I make any sense?

Daniel C דניאל כ [60086]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 23:39:37

Oh and BTW, Germany gave many more points than some of the other countries on the side of the Allies, strange isn't it?

Daniel C דניאל כ [60086]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 23:36:18

So you think WW2 affected the UK's results after 30 or 40 years. Are you serious? But some years it didn't affect it when the UK did less well? Did the UK manipulation stop then? That is the craziest theory I have ever heard. I won't check any more answers, because you are really not displaying the level of education that you say you have.

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 22:30:45

As many Britons beleived that UK was placed significantly low after 2003 because of the so 'called Iraqui bscklash'' then we might have the reason to beleive that UK was overrated because of its politcial dominance after WW2. It is obvious that UK in some extend manipulated the restults to get smht more. For God sake currently I am looking back to old ESC and I can not explain why UK gained all those second places...............there must be a reason

Daniel C דניאל כ [60086]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 22:17:51

I asked about the political reasons that you mentioned that the UK did so well? What are they? You didn't answer that. Obviously the juries liked Jade or her song or is their another explanation? Otherwise, you are just giving opinions and those of a few people, well that doesn't really prove anything, does it?

I would expect that several countries, including the UK, will do less well from televoters compared to juries. It's obvious if so many televotes are being assigned through diasporas and neighbourly voting, there is less available for countries who benefit little from this. That bias is less with juries, some neighbourly voting but virtually no diaspora.

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 22:01:19

And dont say I m biased over UK. I am just pointing a topic.

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 21:56:48

I mean when it comes to find an overrated song this one is relatively the UK entry......................... .

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 21:50:45

First I did not said that UK was overrated because of language if this is what you believe, what I dunno get is why when some fans say that UK has been inexplicably placed in top 3 (however I believe that you deserved all the five first places) you keep saying to us that we are wrong etc etc. We expect an explanation to this..................especial ly when again juries awarded a third place since many other entries has been by far better than Jade. I was in London that period watching the contest with many local people and they still don find any reason to see UK that high.................

Daniel C דניאל כ [60086]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 21:38:37

What are your answers then?

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]

Kenan

I really think that you should read the lyrics of Rändajad, I think you may find that they are a lot deeper and more meaningful than Can you feel the rhythm in my heart? The beat's going düm tek tek repeated over and over again, not to mention the dreadful line Feels so fine which just sounds like American slang

@ Lucky 12b

I agree. I thought Montenegro should have got more nominations. Definately should be there for best female performance (although I think Moldova should get it) and vocal too and stage effects (so wonderfully pink!!)

Nonetheless, I feel Belarus should have got more nominations. Once again so disgustingly robbed.

Dino Mil Jovanni [58964]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 21:18:14

It is highly possible to see Iceland and Estonia dominating these nominations instead of Norway......

Wed 2 Dec 2009 20:56:40

I miss all the nominations of Montenegro:
Best Composer
Best Song
Best Lyric
Best female Singer
Best Performance
Best female Vocalist
Best Choreogrpahy
Best Outfit...

Without Joke: is there any unwritten Rule, that great Entries eliminated in the Semifinal can only be nominated for "best eliminated in Semifinal" & "Moist traditional Europop"??? Guys, this Entry was perfect!!!

I hope Andrea Demirović will get at least this 2 Awards...

I'm glad Estonia has been included in so many categories! I think it was the best performance of this (and many) year. Definitely the best dressed, with a beautiful stage presence along with the classical instruments and smoke machine! Wonderful and deep lyrics. etc. I could go on forever :D
My country is actually Turkey, (well, Australia... but I'm Turkish) but Turkey's performance didn't really stand out. We should really start singing in Turkish!!

Ozi :-) [42913]
Wed 2 Dec 2009 14:52:42

@ Sanka, your entitled to your opinion :) everyone has different tastes when it comes to music! But I have to admit, I also feel as though some of your past comments have had some kind of hidden meaning to it as well. Nonetheless, I might be wrong, when reading forums, emails, text messages (or anything for that matter) people can misunderstand one another. Without verbal communication it’s easier to be misunderstood.
