Ireland: RTÉ to launch Eurosong 2010

Irish broadcaster RTÉ is expected to announce their selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 soon.

It appears from sources in the irish industry close to esctoday.com that RTÉ will announce a Eurosong 2010 competition.

It hasn't been confirmed that there would be a change of format, but RTÉ have been running Eurosong competitions, most recently for the last four years, with slight tweaks in the format year on year.

Ireland has won the Eurovision Song Contest a record seven times, last being in 1996 when the Eurovision Song Contest was staged in Oslo, Norway!

Last year Eurosong 2009, was an open competition that selected Sinéad Mulvey & Black Daisy to sing "Et Cetera" at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009.

Stay tuned to esctoday.com for more info...

I was perfectly happy with the Irish choice in 2009. Now I hope for an equally great song in 2010 :)

It could be worse.
They could send Jedward as an internal selection....

Best of Luck Ireland i have high hopes for you in 2010 :) (L)

Indeed Lily deserved to represent Ireland, allthough Sinead was great and I love her to pieces, Lily's song would have been no.1 in my top 40 for 2009..

it was an amazing song and unique

@Emma Kiernan;
I do SOOOOO agree with you; keep Linda Martin away!!
I will never get over the fact that last year's "expert jury" didn't pick "Every Little Time" performed by Lilly for the final?!?!?!
It would've ended top 3 for me, and everybody I've played it for totally agree with me!!
Such a wonderful song AND artist!!!

As i have already stated,Westlife,would win hands down.The Script,The Corrs,Ronan Keating,Enya......please don't give us anothe dull,half hearted trash.it has to be an internal desision,one song,one act.DON'T LET IRISH PUBLIC,MAKE YET ANOTHER STUPID SELECTION..

I want Ireland to send a song just like the 1996 winner, "The Voice" by Eimear Quinn.

My dream for Ireland would be a typical melancholic Celtic ballad sung in Gaelic or an up-beat violin one. I just hope for something not too poppy and something more authentic/high quality.

I hope Ireland will send a strong ballad or something with celtic sound. They're really good at that.

What I dont understand is the fact apart from the UK, Ireland has probably got more famous people than any other country in Europe. And from these famous people most of them are singers.

Irelands higest paid people are globaly famous singers, much more famous over Europe than Particia Kass (I never heard of her before Eurovision)

Johnny Logan
Ronan Keating
Bono (U2)
Enya
The Corrs
The Script ..

With any one of these acts and a good song such as a track from any of their albums Ireland could score a top five placing and The juries gave Miss Kass much more than she deserved for her boring performence just because of her status as a 'Superstar' when in reality she is only known in Europe and not in Scandinavia, the British Isles or the Balkans..

A band like The corrs singing 'Runaway' In my opinion would win Eurovision hands down, Or even today if Johnny Logan sung the song 'Irishman in America' from his 2009 Album he could score in the top five..

If Ireland sends a nobody, they better have an amazing voice and a great song.. because I'm starting to miss the 90's back when Ireland wanted to win, I for one know If I was Irish I would be ashamed at RTE and I would be complaining and even stalking famous Irish people to try and get them to submit songs lol..

@Patte

Yes, Enya would be amazing, with a rhythmic sort of song. Personally though I'd like to see some sort of Celtic mid-tempo pop song, something like Runaway by The Corrs.

@Chris Ellaby

Agreed, What About Now would make a great Irish entry. Unforuntately its a cover of the American rock band DAUGHTRY... and the original is even quite new, I heard it on BBC Radio 1 last week! Westlife's cover is a simple case of localisation.

If Ireland don't want to host the ESC because of the cost, they've certainly been going about that the right way over the past 10 years. Their entries have just been truly terrible. Every now and then there is a good song or two in the Irish Final but the Irish televoters always pick one of the absolute worst. (Gary O'Shaughnessy, Donna & Joe, Dervish, Dustin the Turkey?) An internal selection of singer & song would be cheap and proably give them a half decent result.

Good luck, Ireland. I am desperately waiting for an Irish song I like. That happened in 99 for the last time ... everything since then ... Well, I don't want to use that kind of language.

ENYA for Ireland :D But that will never happend :/
Ireland has so much good to offer :)
And like people saying RTE is not good and a new format sounds like a good idea.

Good luck ireland :)

Best of luck to Ireland!! (L)

I don't like their entries at all (although I admit actually liking Dustin the Turkey x) sorry but it was funny)

I hope Ireland sends something better than awful 'Et cetera' I hate that song!!

Knowing a little bit the economic situations in Europe, Ireland may well be one of the countries that does not want to win and avoid the expensive organisation.

I think Ireland needs to choose a good performer, or else have a competition with more performers to choose from. And no turkeys!

Why dont they try an internal selection like France. And then they could try to choose Westlife, Ronan Keating, Johny Logan, Enya, The Coors or something else good.
Ireland have so much good to offer, but the selections done by RTE is a disaster. I love Ireland but I dont like RTE.

Westlife performing "What About Now?" would be a good entry, but it's obviously not going to happen.
