National Final in March

Ireland: Open call for songs for Eurovision 2010

As reported by esctoday.com earlier this week, Irish broadcaster RTÉ today has launched its' call for songs for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 to be staged in Oslo, Norway.

This year the selection process is called Eurosong 2010. The process is based on last year's selection format with a few modifications. It will be a Late Late Show special on a date to be confirmed in early March, where five songs will compete to decide Ireland's Eurovision entry.

RTÉ has decided to re-appoint the same five members to the judging panel as last year, chaired by Linda Martin. All five reflect different expertise both in the music industry and the Eurovision Song Contest itself. The other four members are: Julian Benson, choreographer; Mark Crossingham, MD Universal Music Ireland; Larry Gogan, Irish radio broadcaster and Diarmuid Furlong, Eurovision Song Contest expert and fan.

The Irish broadcaster has also decided, in response to the panel's observations, to give them more flexibility in relation to the selection of songs and the pairing of songs with performers. They believe that for an improved performance by Ireland in this highly competitive event, serious and detailed deliberation is required by the judging panel on all the possible options.

RTÉ is inviting entries that include the song, the proposed performer(s) and any proposed performance/staging details, for consideration by the judging panel. The judging panel and RTÉ will have the final decision on the performer of any song selected by the judging panel for Eurosong 2010 final and the judging panel will be entitled to engage in discussions with any songwriter or performer or combination of these in respect of any entry, with a view to selecting the strongest possible combination of song and performer for the Eurosong 2010 selection and the Eurovision Song Contest itself. This includes the possibility of matching a song entry with a performer selected by the judging panel who is different to the performer that performs on the recording submitted with the song entry and also the possibility of matching a performer of a song entry with another song entry.

Ireland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 will be selected from the five finalists by a combination of regional jury and public televote to be held on the night of Eurosong 2010, the winning entry to be the one that gets the highest number of combined votes on the night.

The closing date for entries will be at noon on Monday, the 01st of February, 2010. Entries should be submitted to:

 Eurosong 2010,
 RTÉ Entertainment,
 Donnybrook,
 Dublin 4,
 Ireland.

Further information including the rules can be found on the RTÉ Eurovision Song Contest website here.

@ Lamph.

If we had a fall out it is news to me. As I recall although we had a mutual aquaintance we just didn't click. I assure you I have more things on my mind than to hold to ill feelings for 6 years.

I would like to apologise if I cause you hurt. I never aim to hurt anyone's feelings. As I said my previous post, my comments are not meant to be personal. Maybe Roisin Dubh is the greatest song ever. All I am saying is that in my opinion it isn't and didn't deserve a place in national final let alone in Eurovision.

However, I think blaming the failure of Roisin Dubh on being out of the show-biz loop is a poor excuse. How many times have the Irish selected complete nobodies as Eurovision representatives. 2001, 1998, 1999, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1970 come immediately to mind. As I recall last year's national final was hardly full of big names and Sinead was hardly show-biz.

I don't think RTE executives are that obsessed with show-biz pedigree or they would go simply go with a big name each year.

As I already said. I am not Anti-Lamph, personally. I am against the music which I don't think is worthy of representing Ireland. If Lamph came up with a great song well performed I would be delighted! Winning Eurovision is the main objective.

@ Brendan and Michael UK...

Hi Brendan and Michael.
Just to let Michael know, the main reason that Brendan is being so aggressively anti-Lamph has more to do with the fact that he and I dislike each other than any valid music-related opinion.

Yes, I will concede that myself & Clodagh are 'cocky' insofar as we do consider that 'Róisín Dubh' warranted at least a place among the 6 finalists last year. I believe that it was superior song to at least Johnny Brady's "Amazing", and our carrer prospects were damaged slightly by being denied the opportunity. Yes... very cocky. But at least I'm honest. I'm not going to fake humility, and I'm not stupid enough to think that all 6 finalists beat our song on merit alone.

Unfortunately, one of the main reasons why the song was rejected is that we are out of the 'showbiz' loop. We have no particular reputation or pedigree, and those in the D4 music circles are more likely to plumb for an artist / writer who they have heard good things about. And I can assure you that every act that submitted a song would have had a more impressive CV than us.

It's annoying that it works that way, but we accept it is just part of life. The one good thing about our extreme's of cockiness is that will won't stop believing, and will keep trying to crack this tough old nut called the music biz till the day we die.

But Brendan... please lay off a bit. Our song last year was not half as clichéed, cringey, or embarrassing as you say. This is more about the fact that you dislike our arrogance and that yu & me had a stupid falling out around 6 years ago. No need to confuse poor songwriting craft with a personality clash.

Thanks

I like the fact that if a lame singer writes a good song RTE will take the song and ditch the singer then find a better one :)

what a great new rule :P

Michael UK.

Yeah. I was no great fan of Et Cetera but I infinitely preferred it to Roisin Dubh. Sinead may not have had our best entry ever but I think I think it was an average song competing with great entries. There is no way that Roisin Dubh would have made the final either. They would have been another Dustin The Turkey- amateurish and laughable.

No harm to Lamph. They gave it a go and fair play to them. I have nothing against them personally. I would be delighted if they could come up with a great song that could bring Eurovision home. I thik they do need to be a bit more humble and stop sending petitions and letters of complaint just because they don't get it all their way.

"RTÉ has decided to re-appoint the same five members to the judging panel as last year, chaired by Linda Martin."
These are hardly good news for a country that dreams of qualifying for the finals, IMHO. I remember that male singer (whose name I don´t recall) who was some kind of good looking guy who couldn´t sing to save his life, and Ms Martin could not find anything remotely decent to say about his performance, so she said "He looks like Johnny Logan", and obviously the other members of the jury followed suit, though the singer had sung so so badly that Logan look-like or not it would never save his fate. I want to forget that it was under Ms Martin´s watch that ridiculous puppet got the ticket to Belgrade, but I really can´t.

@Little Imp

lol me too

I think the best choise atm would be Imelda May, she is awesome live and RTE could probably pay her to participate if she gets a good song wrote for her, or writes it herself

Sometimes I really wish that ours and Sweden's selection method (minus the second chance round) would be much more fun to use in countries like Ireland, UK, France, Spain, Germany... They have SO MUCH music - so why not have some semis?

I want more than just 5 lousy songs from Ireland, lol. The level was quite low in their 2009 NF although Et Cetera was clearly best and I liked it, but overall it wasn't a great NF. I hope this time they get something better, but it doesn't seem very promising with the same jury, their poor result and only 5 songs to choose from. Sounds like it will be more unknown singers again. I want to see Ireland do well again and get out of their down-period! :)

I'd like a song by Oscar winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, if there was any remote possibility.

I don't understand why they bring back the same panel as last year?

They were useless and amateur.

But on the other hand the songs weren't any good either.

But they should really go for another type of selection. Last year wasn't good at all.

No Imagine, another Late Late Show Special
However, Ireland is in big trouble financially so they dont have a lot to work with as such.

I would like to see Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud represent Ireland, she has a good voice and is contemporary. Since Cheryl and Sarah are doing their solo projects so should she !!

@ Zanic Night:

Uhhhh, salt in an open wound ... It would have been so great to see Ireland with Leona Daly in 2008. Surely she would have done as good as Maria Haukaas Storeng that year, maybe even better. Both good singers and very simple, yet effective contemporary songs. That damned turkey!

Let's see how Ireland will do this year. Last year they defenitely missed their big chance by not sending their runner up song I wish I could Pretend which was awesome. Take a look again: http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=cGJA3FcXTQE
I can see that this year foreign authors can not participate...funny, because last year the best song was written by Latvian.

That panel was hopeless, they just said everything was wonderful, when it clearly wasn't. Let's hope there are better songs to choose from this time around.

'They believe that for an improved performance by Ireland in this highly competitive event, serious and detailed deliberation is required by the judging panel on all the possible options.'

--Very True, Ireland should be taking this as seriously as we (Norway) have been for the past few years, after coming last enough times we stoped with the crap selection process and moved on to something huge and it's been paying off.

Norway won in 1995 with -Nocturne
Ireland won in 1996 with -The Voice

If Ireland took this year seriously and sent a good performer
like

Imelda May; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=AlO_6zkB4Dg
The Script; http://www.youtube.c(...)&feature=related
Leona Daily; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=cNnvaFg6DbQ
OR
Industry; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=-LapifEwMcc
I would be very happy, actualy over the moon..

Or If the Irish sent someone very famous like France did in 2009, the country could win? :P

Ireland a nation probably with more famous people than anywhere else in Europe (minus the UK);

Ronan Keating; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=Gck-zRNHONY
Enya; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=RY5SWRHGYU4 (I wish)
The Corrs; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=PYwPYkA_jmE
Westlife; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=F4DJHOzIxvs

Sure if any of these faces appeared in Eurovision the ratings would skyrocket, any of these acts could get a sell out tour in any country in Europe their that well known.

Or Ireland cound send a past Eurovision winner, and who is better than
Johnny Logan; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=PG6RhgH4F-E
OR
Niamh Kavanagh; http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=6K2gYsrIVrM
Both of them are still active singers and these performences are both proof cause there from 2009 :D

But If Ireland sends a Nobody again like they did in 2009 (I loved Sineads song but I guess Europe did not agree, or maybe you liked it but voted for your favourite which is fine... unless your favourite was your own country and you make up a small part of the annoying disapora. (lol I hate people who only vote because of where they are from..)

Anyway back on Topic, I wish Ireland the best of luck for 2010 and Realy hope we see countries like, Ireland, Estonia and Sweden reach the final and do well again, instead of the typical Baltic block countries, Russia, Turkey and Greece.

Have Fun RTE. but dont mess things up, Or I will personally attack Linda Martin myself :D

@ MICHAEL UK.

Sorry Michael. The fact that the panel overlooked Lamph last year is a credit to them. I have seen their songs and they just aren't very good. Roisin Dubh is embarrassing to me as an Irish person. Infact it is so bad I couldn't stop laughing at it. It's so derived and cliched and trashy and amateurish.

It annoys me that Lamph has this idea that they have a right to represent Ireland at Eurovision. No one has the right, it is a priviledge. If they really want to get there they need to write a better song, hire a better singer and get a professional to produce their record.

PS- I think they need to learn some humility, if I was an RTE executive I'd purposefully ignore them simply because they are always banging on about how RTE isn't recognising their greatness. I don't think their attitude and attempt at bullying will win them many friends in RTE or elsewhere.

Best of Luck Ireland i have high hopes for you in 2010 :) (L)

is this the same selection panel who stupidly chose to ignore lamph this year?? if so , theyve learned nothing
