Financial difficulties

No San Marino either for Eurovision 2010

One more country will not be taking part in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest due to financial reasons. San Marino TV, after months of unsuccessful negotiations with the local Parliament and sponsors, will be unable to send a representative to Oslo as they have not been able to obtain state or private funding.

San Marino joined the Eurovision family in 2008 sending Italian Sammarinese boy band Miodio who did not make it to the final that year. In 2009, San Marino TV, disappointed in the poor 2008 placing as well as faced with financial difficulties decided not to take part. Negotiations started again in late 2009 inside the microstate to decide whether it would be possible for them to enter for the 2010 edition of the contest to be held in Oslo, Norway. Paola and Chiara, the successful Italian sister duo, were approached and agreed to represent the country should they decide to take part after all.

After months of negotiation SMRTV  have been unable to come up with the funding required thus they will not be able to enter the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 after all.

Since every year ESC is on middle of May ( exept this year ) i thing EBU must change the rules for withdrawing or confirm day, From 15 of december until middle of May is 5 months ( almost half year ) , will be much better if deadline will be end of January or 15 of February beacuse each tv station funds for next year aproved or not aproved or cut usual end of the year, so the countries forces to take a decicion about the next ESC before even to know if they have enough money , also if countries have more space can found a sponsors but not before end of the year beacuse also companys make they r logistics to close the year and they dont even know how many money they can give or not to beacume they r countrey sponsor for ESC. :S

With so many countries unable to participate in the current financial climate due to a lack of funds, isn't it time the contest faced the facts and pared down the whole thing - fewer gimmicks, smaller stage, fewer explosions and fireworks etc? Or perhaps the telecommunications people who clearly make a mint out of our votes ought to plough more back into the contest, for now at least?

That was the real injustice of 2008. I still don't understand how San Marino didn't go through (ok, because nobody voted for them and there were 8 other countries that more people voted for that didn't make it either). Just don't get it !

That's such a shame! I really liked their entry! majorly underrated.

Hope to see San Marino in the future!

We don't have to blame San Marino for not joining the show. They tried luck and saw how their hopes went in a moment. The last in the semifinal. If San Marino had been well treated in 2008, maybe we could see in 2009 or 2010 Italy in the contest... but... all eastern Europe voted for Russia, Armenia, Belarus, and the neighbour countries. When will we learn?

Big deal!
Countries come and go in the ESC.
It has been that way ever since the second contest way back in 1957.
Can´t see why all of a sudden this should change now.

I would be interested in knowing what the people of San Marino, Monaco, Andorra thinks about this.
Do they care? Do the people want to participate? Or only us eurofans? I dont see the point of a country attending the ESC only to set a new record of participating countries - or to satisfy us eurofans...

oh that's a shame. EBU should act immediately. Eurovision 2010 would be a boring contest.

RIP Eurovision for Italy, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Monaco, Austria, Hungary, San Marino, Montenegro and Andorra. Non starter for Liechtenstein.

It seems like if finances are the problem that they are setting the fees too high. Why does the contest have to be staged in the biggest arenas, spending as much money as possible, when It can be done for far less? Maybe countries can stop producing preview videos too and reduce the costs further.

Miserable countries like Austria, Italy and Luxembourg can stay out for all I care, but the ones that really want to be in it should be in it I think.

In my opinion, the financial reasons are just excuses. I sopose that the participation fee of San Marino in Eurovision is ridiculous. The TV station can negociate with the interested participant team (singer+record compnay) to share expenses and the elction can be internal. So, in fact, not an impossible amount of money should be the question. For example, how much spends San Marino in the footbal team just to finnish alway at the bottom of the European or World competitions ???

Part of the charm of ESC has been participation of small states like Luxembourg and Monaco, and later Andorra and San Marino. I wish they all came back. As a matter of fact I wish all EBU member states entered, including Lebanon. ESC has had a lot of bad songs in it, but also some great ones, some amazing artists and it 's nice to get introduced to artists one would never come across on radio or TV in each of our home countries.

Shame... I hope they will decide to come back in 2011...

So is it official 38 countries for 2010 ???

Lina !!! [56410]

@Kevin yes of course a lot of countries doit that but i thing @Ron Lerner tried to say that microstates beacuse of the r very small population send ALWAYS foreigner signer and i have to agree with him about Monaco , for Andorra i dont know previous ESC singers back rounds . But personal i thing each countrey big or small must send local singers , for example Poland thinging to send a foreigner singer to Oslo , for me this is ridicilus beacuse Poland is such a big countrey with thousands singers and composers and that thing is not acceptable ( for me ).

@Kevin Knight VI , Helena Paparizou and Kalomoira have GREEK parents ! So they are NOT foreigners !! If you want to give an example its better to speak about Swiss 2005 song with Vanilla Nija from Estonia !

Sorry for saying that, but I think those West-European countries are withdrawing just because of bad placings in Eurovision! :S I think those stories like: The broadcaster is in crisis now, ... are just lies! :S

@ Axel

You don't get to count until 100 and it's all over too soon...until the next time.

Bad news :( If I'm not mistaken ESC 2008 still holds the record for most participants.

@Ron,

I always come on holiday to GHreece, does that count aswell ?

Ron Lerner [60899]
Tue 15 Dec 2009 16:46:00

@ Kevin

Helena Paparizou and Kalomira are of Greek origin anyway, so that's good enough for me. I'm not against the participation of a foreigner as long as he or she have proven links to the country they're representing, be it by origin or citizenship. If microstates can't come up with local talents in most cases, then I don't see the point in their long-run participation.

It is a shame but not really a surprise. I don't agree that such small countries as San Marino or Monaco should necessarily have performers from their own countries, as they only have abround 30 thousand people each.
