esctoday.com Awards 2009

Patricia Kaas wins Best female performance award

The votes for the fourth annual esctoday.com awards have been cast over the last three and a half weeks and now it is time to reveal the results. We start with the Best female performance award.

The 2009 esctoday.com Award for Best female performance goes to...

  • ... Patricia Kaas of France

Patricia Kaas represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest this year and placed eighth in the final with the song Et s'il fallait le faire

The winner

This is the very first esctoday.com award for France and therefore also the first French victory in this category. This has award has previously went to Tina Karol (Ukraine) in 2006, Magdi Rúzsa (Hungary) in 2007 and Ani Lorak (Ukraine) in 2008.

Patricia Kaas is one of the most successful French singers ever. She was discoverd by actor Gérard Depardieu at the age of 19 and released a first single in 1985, but her first major success came in 1988 with the release of the album Mademoiselle chante…. She has sold more than 15 million records since.

All of her seven studio albums had managed to reach the top ten of the French album charts when she decided to take a major break from the music business in 2005. In 2009, she returned with the release of her eighth studio album Kabaret and the announcement that she will represent France in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow.

Patricia Kaas is not only famous in France but has also enjoyed commercial success in Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and even New Zealand. Her style is often described as "chanson" but in fact, it mixes classic French elements with American pop and rock music.

The complete results

Patricia Kaas narrowly won this category ahead of Yohanna from Iceland. Remarkably, it was not only the first time that this award went to the performance of a ballad, but also the three ballad performances nominated in this category also finished in the top three.

  1. Patricia Kaas (France) - 31.1%
  2. Yohanna (Iceland) - 29.8.%
  3. Jade Ewen (United Kingdom) - 13.9%
  4. Hadise (Turkey) - 13.1%
  5. Nelly Ciobanu - 12.0%

It's amazing how some people use this website to spread their frustration, spend time on writing how much they hate some performers and calling them names.

ΟΚ she was my second best here after Iceland but this does not make Yohanna better, since Patricia is my overall best performance of this year. The latter has been the reason I voted for Yohanna in this poll, namely I wanted to give some chance to her because she was also very good!!!!

well first award given of the year, first year i vote though i've been a member for a very long time here, and first award i voted for the winner.. best performance of the decade for me as well, and second best esc song of the decade.. I thought Iceland would win this but I guess the dolphin and the dress killed her chances.. Probably the only award Patricia will win with Estonia and Iceland and Norway running against her in all the other categories, but still, a nice way for fans to remind everyone that we love CLASS more than TRASH

No way!

Sorry but she is vastly over rated. her voice is weak and the performance was D U double LL. DULL.

Well done! She deserved this award, since she was clearly the best! She also deserved a top 5 position, but at least she was in the top 10.

She was simply the best in Moscow.

In a competition with only expert (real experts, not the trashy ones used there) juries and no televote, she would win by a landslide, because her performance was brilliant.
But this is ESC, now more a cheap Saturday night show than a real song contest. Only the Russian jury gave 12 points to her and the televote sucked big time again (the best score was an 8 gave by Armenian televote).

To me, Kaas' classics are :
Il me dit que je suis belle

and

Je voudrais la connaître
