Urban Symphony win Best duo/group performance award

The votes for the fourth annual esctoday.com awards have been cast over the last three and a half weeks and now it is time to reveal the results. We continue with the Best duo/group performance award.

The 2009 esctoday.com Award for Best duo/group performance goes to...

  • ...Urban Symphony of Estonia

Urban Symphony represented Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest this year and and finished  third in the second semi final and sixth in the final with the song Rändajad.

The winners

This is the very first esctoday.com award for Estonia and therefore also the first victory in this category. Previously, this award has gone to Lordi (Finland) in 2006, D'Nash (Spain) in 2007 and Euroband (Iceland) in 2008.

Urban Symphony centers around 21-year-old lead singer and violinist Sandra Nurmsalu. She became famous in 2007 as a contestant in the talent search Kaks takti etti. The same show has also seen many other Estonian Eurovision Song Contest representatives like Ines (2000), Gerli Padar (2007), Tanel Padar (2001) and Silvi Vrait (1994), to name just a few.

The other members of Urban Symphony are viola player Mann Helstein, who has performed with various orchestras all over Europe, cellist Johanna Mängel, who is also working as a journalist and cellist Mari Möldre, who is the youngest group member at the age of 17 and has performed in many countries including Australia. Urban Symphony met during the show Kaks takti etti, when a bands round was held.

Urban Symphony took part in the Estonian national final for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with their entry Rändajad, although Sandra Nurmsalu was originally announced to take part as a soloist. They could win the selection and will represent Estonia in Moscow. Rändajad is the first entry performed in standard Estonian since 1998, although the 2004 entry was performed in the Võro dialect. Their song reached the  charts in various countries around Europe.

The complete results

Urban Symphony were the clear winners of this category ahead of AySel & Arash from Azerbaijan. Portugal's Flor-de-Lis follow in third place.

  1. Urban Symphony (Estonia) - 30.3%
  2. AySel & Arash (Azerbaijan) - 21.7%
  3. Flor-de-Lis (Portugal) - 18.5%
  4. Regina (Bosnia & Herzegovina) - 15.2%

That's absolutely a good choice: great song, great voices, great performance and sound either fresh or traditional. Songs like Randajaad give ESC a new dignity. Many, many, many congratulations.
And Merry Christmas to everybody from Italy!

P.S. Yesterday our tv sent the Concert for the Peace Nobel Prize, with a very impressive live version of Fairytale!
