esctoday.com Awards 2009

Ukrainian team wins Best stage effects award

The votes for the fourth annual esctoday.com awards have been cast over the last three and a half weeks and now it is time to reveal the results. We continue with the Best stage effects award.

The 2009 esctoday.com Award for Best stage effects goes to...

  • ...the Ukrainian team

Ukraine was represented by Svetlana Loboda, who finished sixth in the second semi final and 13th in the final with her song Be my Valentine! (Anti-crisis girl).

  • You can find the list of all award results revealed so far this year here

The winner

This is the first esctoday.com Award for Ukraine this year and the eighth award overall following victories in the category Performance of the year in 2006, 2007 and 2008, Best female performance in 2006 and 2008, Best preview video in 2008 and Best dressed act in 2008. The Best stage effects award was given out for the first time this year.

The Ukrainian stage is probably best remembered for the large cog structure, which became known as "hell machine". The background images featured laser-like effects that changed various times throughout the performance.

The complete results

This was one of the closest categories with less than 6% between the top five. Ukraine one ahead of Portugal followed by Greece.

  1. Ukraine - 23.6%
  2. Portugal - 21.1%
  3. Greece - 19.0%
  4. Iceland - 18.5%
  5. Estonia - 17.7%

Geraint UK
What you may not know is that TK is Slutlana's biggest fan :D He is basically the male version, trust me on that one :D

To the editor, Ukraine was 12th in the final, not 13th.

I agree everyone should have their own opinions but then to call them names and to publicly bash them is wrong....just cos she was provocative, doesnt mean shes a slag/slut...atleast she wasnt on stage with her fanny out!! Get over it, seriously!

Her song this year was the best!
Seriously, it was very underrated...

Also, I think those of you calling her Slutlana are bang out of order. You may not like her, but there are limits. In fact, you have no reason to dislike her as you've never met the woman.

Gary, this award has nothing to do with the song, it's for best stage effects. Clue is in the title.

OMG! They give awards to anyone, no matter how rubbish the song is.

i thing Norway and Bosnia sould be in that category and not Iceland and Estonia.

LOL at what TK said.

Slutlana was terrible, but I can't say I was even entertained by her performance. It was sheer torture to watch and listen to.

@Geraint UK

Please, TK is right..
And besides if everyone just commented on what they like here, there wouldnt be any comments.

Slutlana totally deserved to win this, the song and performance was tacky and hideous, but very entertaining. :D

Finally an award for Ukraine!

For me Ukraine had it all! The most professional show and together with Estonia they had the coolest and most innovative song and I find it very underrated.

I think people should praise effort instead of some lame typical ballad with some lame singer just standing there.

@ T.K

Bit much isn't it...just because she puts on a show (be it provocative) it doesn't mean that you should call her all the sluts going!! Get a grip, you dont like her so dont comment!!

hahaha slutlana totally deserved this! yeh she was trashy, yeh the song was F grade schlock horror, yeh her english was atrocious, yeh the lyrics were riduculous, yeh the performance was some kind of kinky german porno, yeh slutlana couldve hosted esc 2010 inside herself, lord knows its the biggest venue in kyiv and everyone has already been there..... but the show was great hahhaha

WS is right, so I dunno get why there is a award for this category.

I personally expected the Hell Machine to be a bit more interesting than it turned out. I can at least remember the Portuguese background (technicolour vomit). Greece had the giant stapler... I do not remember the Icelandic background, I think the Estonian one was kinda dark... I guess the Ukraine deserved this award.

she was really the best.

i think iceland had lovely imagery, such as the dolphin, and i did love estonias use of the screens at the beginning :)

Oh cool! Good result here! although I'm not the biggest fan of the song, the performance and the staging was pretty Awesome!
Why is Greece nominated? that was just one big hair straightner.
Surprised seeing Estonia at the bottom here.

I would say that Iceland was the most attractive background, but I don't see why that should even be considered as part of the award.

And thinking of it, this award is not a good idea. The amount of things brought on stage since 2006 is staggering. Before that year we saw almost no requisites.

sanka [60037]

True . Stage effects should cointain something you brought onto the stage with you , not only the screens behind you .

The same can be said about Iceland and probably Estonia too. (Can't remember there backdrop and effects.)
