esctoday.com Awards 2009
Anse Lazio wins Lyricist of the year/Non-English award
The 2009 esctoday.com Award for Lyricist of the year/Non-English and multilingual lyrics goes to...
- ...Anse Lazio of France
Anse Lazio wrote the lyrics to the French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. Performed by Patricia Kaas, Et s'il fallait le faire finished eighth in the final.
- You can find the list of all award results revealed so far this year here.
The winner
This is the second esctoday.com award for France both this year and overall. Patricia Kaas has earlier won the award for Best female performance. It is the first time that this award is given out as in 2007 and 2008, there was only one award for Lyricist of the year. The two awards went to Saša Miloševic Mare (Serbia) in 2007 and Maria Haukaas Storeng (Norway) in 2008.
The pseudonym Anse Lazio is based on the name of a beach on the Seychellois island Praslin. Et s'il fallait le faire was the only song on Patricia Kaas' album Kabaret that he has worked on but he had previously composed the music to the song N'oublie pas, which was the closing track on Australian singer Tina Arena's French language studio album 7 vies.
Through the lyrics of Et s'il fallait faire (meaning And if it had to be done), the singer tells someone that she would do everything so that she is still loved herself. The tone seems to be passionate but can also be interpreted as desperate:
Et s'il fallait le faire [...] Je veux bien tout donner | And if it had to be done [...] I do want to give everything |
The complete results
Anse Lazio won this award ahead of Estonian lyricist Sven Lõhmus, who has already won the award as Composer of the year and for the Best arrangement and production.

Oh right. I forgot there was an own award for non-English lyrics. Well, Estonia and Bosnia were the best here, so not a good winner again for me, lol.
NOOO
Estonian lyricist deserved it..
I liked Patricia's song but lyrics was 'cliché'...
it was a tough race, since none of us spoke all the languages rpesented (French, Estonian, Hebrew, Portuguese and a sort of serbo-croatian i guess can be called Bosnian) to make a difference. As a French man I was indeed in favor of my country's lyrics, which are often strong in esc (well that's to say without counting our own horrors lyrics wise like france 80 or 87 but with Serge Gainsbourg along or "La Source" we had a good share of strong lyrics).. Overall it's good to have an award for this, regardless who the winner was.
Those lyrics are among the 5 best ever presented at ESC since 1956. Well deserved. Congrats!
Mark, I couldn't agree more. Standardizing everything in English is a mistake. I support the return to the rule that stated that each country should compete with a song written in its native language. My congratulations to France.
I personally didn't like the Israeli and Portuguese entries this year but lyically, they were both very good, actually, all of the songs were very good lyrically. I voted for Bosnia.
All these lyrics are just great, however France's are just wonderful !! Whoever said love dies at 40 hmph.
This also shows how much better the non-english lyrics are compared to the english !
I'd only wish we get some more countries using their native language, then maybe we can stop with all the cliche bad english
But hey ho if you wanna have some fun, don't run
Finaly fair result!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!
My vote went to Estonia, but Sweden was better!
OK result. France was my second best while my vote went to Bosnia and Herzegovina!
I really like all 5 of these songs. My vote went to Estonia but I'm just as happy the top spot went to France.
Well, the Dutch song also had an important message. Still I am glad it didn't win the award for best English lyrics. I think this is very well deserved for France.
Well-deserved award. The moment I fell in love with this song was when someone posted a translation of the lyrics.
Estonia and B&H also had great lyrics.
It's a very good news !
the Israeli lyrics had a very important message and were well written? well sorry i strongly disagree with you.
Et S'il fallait le faire had the best lyrics and it's sad that the majority didn't know the meaning of the lyrics...
Awesome! All this top 5 had great words
The French lyrics were nice, however out of the top 5 I would have chosen Israel simply on the basis that, whilst the Israeli lyrics may not have flowed or been as descriptive as the French lyrics, they had a very important message and put across this message very well so imo were well written
