esctoday.com Awards 2009
Patricia Kaas wins Performace of the year award
The 2009 esctoday.com Award for Performance of the year goes to...
- ... Patricia Kaas of France
Patricia Kaas represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest this year and placed eighth in the final with the song Et s'il fallait le faire.
The winner
This is the third esctoday.com award for France both this year and overall. Previously, awards were achieved for Best female performance and Lyricist of the year/Non-English and multilingual lyrics. It is the very first time that this award does not go to the representative from Ukraine as the previous winners were Tina Karol in 2006, Verka Serduchka in 2007 and Ani Lorak in 2008.
Patricia Kaas is one of the most successful French singers ever. She was discoverd by actor Gérard Depardieu at the age of 19 and released a first single in 1985, but her first major success came in 1988 with the release of the album Mademoiselle chante…. She has sold more than 15 million records since.
All of her seven studio albums had managed to reach the top ten of the French album charts when she decided to take a major break from the music business in 2005. In 2009, she returned with the release of her eighth studio album Kabaret and the announcement that she will represent France in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow.
Patricia Kaas is not only famous in France but has also enjoyed commercial success in Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and even New Zealand. Her style is often described as "chanson" but in fact, it mixes classic French elements with American pop and rock music.
The complete results
Being the winner in the Best female performance category, Patricia Kaas won this award ahead of Alexander Rybak, who was the winner in the Best male performance category. Ukraine misses out on a fourth award in this category in a row but still did rather well getting about one fifth of the votes.
- Patricia Kaas (France) - 27.6%
- Alexander Rybak (Norway) - 20.9%
- Svetlana Loboda (Ukraine) - 20.5%
- Yohanna (Iceland) - 18.8%
- Hadise (Turkey) - 12.3%

@Dragan :-)
Kaas, not Kass!
@Gene Hunt
Agree completely.
This was certainly not the best performance. Not vocally and not like Alexander - who had the whole package. Another winner only because some fans here are unhappy with the real winner.

I can't imagine how thrilled and excited Patricia Kaas must be to get this award!
HAHA
It was not the best performance of 2009 but at least it was impressive and this awards is most respectable awards in all esctoday awards(;(;
She was, is, and always will be sensational Congrats Patricia...
She did give the best performance, simple, elegant and magical. Congrats, Patricia
Yes!! Sakis lost to Rybak and Kass
yes!! norway lost to kaas.
good, good, at least svetlana didnt win!
but this song is being a bit overrated recently...
I can't imagine how thrilled and excited Patricia Kaas must be to get this award!
patricia had won the female performance award, but by a small margin, I thought that with this overall award Iceland would be in front of France but apparently fans do think that patricia made the best performance of the year and by far! good news !
cant get...really interesting...
yohanna was better...
Well deserved!!
How well deserved, the best performance by far and not a gimmick in sight
Great choice! Very well, deserved!
Too much of votes for Ukraine.
congratulations! Obviously, there is not always need for tons of expensive props and fireworks in order to make a good performance.
She deserved this victory.Congratulations
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS, there wasn't any other choice in my opinion!
Great Performance but I still think Ukraine was best
At least the fans can have some form of acknowledgement for great entries even if we don't always with each other
Now do we have to wait 'til 23:59 to get the last result? Or could it be sooner?
Gene, as Barzin put it so well, we ar not the masses. We are ESC fans who follow the event closely. Patricia's 'win was fair. There were other possible choices, like Cyprus, their stage presentation was very effective (the singer's voice wasn't a all), Norway, Iceland, Portugal (helped by the amazing set behind Flor-de-Lis) for instance.
Ukraine had the best performance in my opinion
yes yes yes!!!! she is simply the best!
@gene
why dont u respect others taste....?
Ofcourse Norway had a nice performance for a night with friends eating and drinking(having fun...) but there were only a few performances which touched "hearts" ...performances without dancers running arround jumping e.t.c.
Some singers passed feelings being along onstage.......it aint easy...they did it their way
.
Of course i respect other opinions thats why i didnt even mention 2 performances in this top5 which imo were for laughs...!
@Gene:
That's why the esctoday.com awards are here. We are not the masses, we are fans who are watching ESC performances all year long. If these awards should reflect the actual ESC result, then they would actually be pretty pointless.
Anyway, a big thank you to all of you who voted for Patricia! The first non-Ukrainian winner - amazing!
Norway should have got this.
It just shows how out of touch with the masses people on here are. Norway won by a landslide last May because their performance was by far the best overall. To give this one to anyone else is a travesty
France? There are too many people on here who equate pompous nonsense with class. This is the worst result in these polls.
Iceland should have won this award. Yohanna had a amazing performance.
Yea the best won..!!!
It was a Class performance.....!!!
It was a one ladys show...
