NDR looks for the most beautiful Eurovision songs of all time

The German public broadcaster NDR has launched an online poll to find out the most beautiful Eurovision entries of all time. Visitors have until the 10th of January to vote for their favourite songs. The results will be presented on a live televised show in May.

A total of 50 Eurovision songs are available to vote for. Among them we can find some winners of the contest, like France Gall's Poupée de cire, poupée de son (Luxembourg 1965), Brotherhood of Man's Save your kisses for me (United Kingdom 1976), Olsen Brothers' Fly on the wings of love (Denmark 2000), Dana International's Diva (Israel 1998) or this year's winner, Alexander Rybak with Fairytale. A number of German entries can be found as well.

The outcome of the poll will be presented on a live television show to be broadcast next May on NDR.

You can cast your votes here .

Yes but it's for the most beautiful song that German people will recognise. Remember it's a German site, and the only songs the average German will remember are ones that are either a) German entries or b) Ones that were huge hits in Germany, so theres no point having Lane Moje or Den Vilda there because evidently they weren't hits in Germany.

I am from Germany & I think, this, too, that this Poll is stupid anyway. It´s great, that German TV does such a Poll, but I think, it´s stupid, that the Channel chooses the whole Top50 & People can only influence the Ranking. It would be more interesting, if there were at least 60 Songs, so that 10 Songs can fail...But it´s good, that this Time, there are (almost) no Preselecction Songs:-)

Where is "Fångad av en Stormvind"???:-(
2 Years ago, it was in that Poll & finished (I think) 14th:-(

I voted for No Angles!! Their live singing wasn't the best, but their song is deffinetly one of the best!!! :)

I am really wondering why people keep critizing this poll, did the NDR ask for it to be published on this site? Use your logic chamber up there, I'm sure you have it, and don't complain about your favourites most people in Germany haven't heard of not being there.

Oh come on guys. I think some of you still did not get the point of this pool. Of course it´s not made for the international audience that´s why it should not be published here imo, it´s espacially for the german audience with songs they still remember! And if you ask somebody to name a few great Eurovision songs you won´t hear fans beloved lane moje or Molitva, just because they do not know it. Those songs just failed in the "real" music business, at least in Germany. So if a song like lane moje would be at the list it would be 49th out of 50 songs in the final ranking, so it does not make any sense and you will moan about the result. It´s just a pool to creat an entertaining show just before ESC and that´s a good point for the german eurovision audience! So stop critisize

@Thorazin Corazon

I thought this poll is for the most BEAUTIFUL not for the song with most international success...

I really think Leja and Lane Mojje should be there instead for Hard Rock Hallelujah. It's a good song but no beautiful.

I also think Sweden's "Den vilda" should be there.

lmao imagine if a German song did not win..

"No Lane Moje, no Leyla but Lordi?"

Both Lane Moje and Leyla weren't exactly international hits outside of the Balkan's, whereas Lordi charted pretty much everywhere. NDR have to put a list together with songs German people will recognise, because the chances are the average German (and in fact the average European) won't have a clue what Lane Moje is, however if you asked them who Lordi were then you'd get a different response.

Drusus,

Every list such as this one will be ridiculous for someone. I guess the main aim of this poll is to attract viewers to ESC in Germany, hence all those German entries. I think that a fellow fan has already made this point. Furthermore, you have to agree that Western Europe has more ESC history than Eastern Europe for obvious reasons. I am from the most western country in Europe (well, second most, if you don't count Iceland) and I have nothing against Eastern Europe; actually, I have listed Bosnia and Armenia as two of my favourite ESC countries. I just don't like diaspora and block voting and that is way the juries are welcome.

@drusus this list is as ridiculous as ur list of favorite countries.
It smells like discrimination cuz i can´t see a traditional western country in there.
Unlike the old days modern eurovision Songs are normaly not successful in Germany except some german entries like no no never or frauen regiern die welt or rybak this year he reached the top 10 in the german charts for some weeks and that was a big exception.
If u can read something in the german press about the ESC and eastern Europe or Turkey/Armenia.. its almost every year something about neighbour or diaspora voting. The Songs doesn´t matter and that´s sad but it is the ultimate result of diaspora and neighbour voting.

That poll smells like discrimination....only one song from all eastern Europe? And that one - despite being a decent winning entry - surely isn't " beautiful "! No Lane Moje, no Leyla but Lordi? Ridiculous. What's their definition of " beautiful "?

Most of these songs are very old too....so what does the NDR wanna tell us? Only the very old songs from the west were beautiful and the modern ESC sucks, or what's the message?

this list is of course not to be taken seriously in the sense of NDR actually believing that the most beautiful 50 Esc songs are the ones listed there. it's just for a little entertainment at the preselection run for a public that is not following Eurovision too closely.

Michael UK
Its one of my all time favorites to, Together with Nocturce ( Norway ), Den vilda ( sweden ) and love shine a light ( UK ). I have not lisent to much on the songs before 1997 since i am born in the 90s. But I will do that as soon as possible. But i know Poupée de cire, poupée de son and its a brilliant song , and I am studying french right now.

If I had to choose one song it is Yugoslavia 1976:
Ambasadori - Ne mogu skriti svoju bol (which finished second from last, by the way)

I agree Hobbes, it's a haunting song, but it suffers from the fact that Ireland won so many times in a row. Nevertheless, I wouldn't select it as the best in ESC history.

@ patte
poupee de cire... is my all time esc fave song , its ageless, classic brilliant song

What about Ireland's 'The Voice' from 1996?

Incredibly beautiful...

beautiful songs Lordi ? lol ... :P Well France Gall's Poupée de cire is a classic and i like, it's the best over there, so i think she got MY vote, and she is altso cute. One of the most beautiful songs for me is Tommy körberg - Stad i ljus ( Sweden 1988 ), but it wasen't on the list.

DannyT [43795]

I think that is a fair point Michael UK - 1994 was quite ballad heavy - its just I can't stand songs in different languages that try to sneak in a bit of English so that more people can get the hook lol

@ws
I agree now with your choices too - your woman Michelle's voice could grate cheese while I still can't believe juries voted that German girl band nightmare ahead of the beautiful Hungarian song (and wee Frances Ruffle for the UK for that matter)

Worst German songs:
Mekado - Wir gebn ne Party: Three boring girls with a typical Siegel song singing about being hip and cool.
Michelle - Wer Liebe lebt: Can't stand that woman, with her nasal unnatural voice.

Sat 2 Jan 2010 14:02:46

More importantly worst German entry!

Now Germany has been very good at sending some shocking entries - that one about Genghis Khan, Run & Hide in 2005 sung by a woman without a note in her head...

However, my vote would lie with the blind lady they sent in 2002. What were they playing at with firstly by choosing her - I'm all for equality and shizz like that but her voice was just shrill and then the song! I swear if all music sounded like that I would happily live without it - that entry is one for the Eurovision bin.

Wooo glad to get that out of my system!

Lol btw about leaving out Cypriot entries because Cyprus have sent some classics like that one were... (I think this is where I will draw my blank)

Yeah, let's blame the German public they can't remember a "classic" like Tornero or Hasheket Shenisar.

Of course such a poll is pointless. But it is even more pointless to judge it from another countries perspective. Somehow I can understand why these songs made it. A lot of these songs were hits. For example I hate Bucks Fizz' song, but it was a hit back then. And while Lane Moje (for example) is a much better song, how much success did that song have in Germany?
