Ukraine sets language rule for song selection
This means that Vassyl Lazarovich, the 2010 Ukrainian participant, will be singing in one or several of these languages next May in Oslo.
Since its Eurovision debut back in 2003, English has been the most used language in Ukrainian entries. Tina Karol in 2006, Ani Lorak in 2008 and Svetlana Loboda in 2009 sung their songs entirely in that language. Ruslana in 2004 and Greenjolly in 2005 used a mixture of English and Ukrainian. Olexander Ponomaryov, in 2003, sung almost entirely in English, except a small phrase in Spanish (Hasta la vista), which gives raise to the title of the song. And last, but not least, Verka Serduchka in 2007 sung Dancing lasha tumbai in a mixture of Ukrainian, English and German.

No French - why ???
Spanish or Italian (or even English) before Russian in Ukraine... smells politics.
....one more thing.
I think that member "Yerevan Yan" should be banned for what he wrote about Ukrainian president, for at least three reasons: first - this is a music page, not political one; second - who are you to decide who is good president for Ukraine?, and third - unlike some other countries, Ukraine is a democratic country which chose freedom and democracy over dark, fear and dictatorship. If your country is in love with Russia, and does everything to please Russia, it doesn't mean that other countries should do the same.
I dont't really care about a language rule. In my opinion, the most important thing is that the song is good.
The only thing that matters when considering performing language, is this - if you choose a song in foreign language, you have to have a lyricist who can SPEAK the language he writes the song in (no more bad english, bad french, bad italian in ESC please!!! :-)
Andrew -
I can't be bothered to check, so I'll take your word for it.
I still don't see what all the fuss is about though. It's not like a song in Russian would ever have won the selection anyway, and neither will anything in Italian or Spanish.
good luck from Armenia!
No more language rules! Freedom of language use!
omg u all need lives seriously... who f-ing cares
Dear smartass critics of this decision. Did it ever appear to you that this rule could have some tie with a guy? I mean, c'mon - you have to have some experience in language to sing a song in it. And since Vasyl finished musical conservatory, it would be appropriate to suggest he is more familiar with Italian or Spanish language bacause majority classical musical pieceses taught in Ukraine are written in those two languages. BINGO!
Spanish language is not popular in ESC , also Italy is not in ESC and also i thing italian language is not popular any more and especially if the song is coming from non italian language countrey. I thing they will send a song in english or ukranian or 50/50 . I realy doubt if they will risk with italian or spanish lyrics.
This rule is really just a waste of time, couldn't they just decide whether to only sing in Ukrainian or accept free choice of language instead of this complicated rule that is only bringing unfairness and OBVIOUS anti-russian bias lol
Marko, I also liked Russia 09, especially the way the song was presented and the singer's stage presence. WAAAY better than Russia 08, for example.
Anastacia Prikhodko sang the best song "Mamo" in both, Russian and Ukraininan for Russia last year!!
James F
You can watch three of his videos in one of the previous themes. In all of them he sings in Russian.
To all the people saying Russian wasn't included because of politics: prove it. How do you know it wasn't the choice of the singer himself? Maybe he doesn't speak Russian, and doesn't feel comfortable singing in it.
Adwertisement
Somewhere in Los Angeles some guys writing winning song of esc 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

P.S. Goodluck Ukrain! Wish you better president!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't like that rule at all
Such a populist narrow-minded and discriminatory decision, not just against the Russian Language but practically against every other language on Earth. It's obvious what's behind it and by what kind of mindset it is driven, but the funny thing is that no one is going to buy Ukraine's masquarade ball wannabee song in Italian or Spanish and people will see right through it for what it is: a cheap shot at appealing certain audiences with a fake and distorted notion of Multi-Culturalism or Pan-Europeanism. BTW, Latvia and Cyprus sang in Italian at least once in the past but not because of some silly language rule criteria that is a complete joke and which casts a certain shadow on Ukraine's truly deserved past achievements on ESC.
no Russian? that's wrong, it's really wrong to mix Eurovision with politics... shame to NTU...
just an awkward provocation against russia and russian-speakers to allow little languages like Italian and even Spanish but not Russian (spoken by 30% of Ukrainians as a native tongue and understood by nearly anybody).
patte:
Nice new pic you have
I saw Avatar the week after christmas. It was amazing!!
It's dumb to set a language rule.Let the artists sing in any language they want
Just one more thing, I would like to thank whoever made this "bright"
decision for not having included Portuguese. Anyway, good luck, something tells me you're going to need it...
Well Morgan, borrowing an expression used by Togravus Ceterum, your last post made my day. Thanks for that.
Ohh apparently theres about 150,000 Romanians living in Ukraine and 409,000 Moldovans, I wonder if that has something to do with the Italian factor? I doubt it somewhat but eh
i really really think this is dumb : it's a cliché attitude than these languages are colorful, exotic, dancing.. technically spain is the only spanish speaking country in eurovision and switzerland the only one speaking italian.. while german (germany, belgium, switzerland) or french (france, belgium, switzerland) are spoken by more.. So it really isn't about points, but about a specific "style'" attached on clichés.. how stupid.. Ukrainian would be the only way to go.. And let's all of course notice the absence of Russian (of course..) *sigh*
Well , Ukraine was one of my favourites for last 3 years . I still have doubts that they'll make a nice song this year but i love this country
I wish the best for Ukraine ! And i wanted to see Evgenia Vlasova on Eurovision
