Finnish television poll

Jasmine was the "wrongest choice"

Early this week, Finnish television YLE launched a poll on its website, asking people who they think had been the "wrongest choice" for Finland since the country takes part. Results were made public yesterday, Friday.

A total of 16 titles were submitted to voters and the contest was won by Jasmine’s Niin kaunis on taivas, the 1996 Finnish entry, which placed last in Olso, 14 years ago. Kojo’s Nuku pommiin came second and Nina’s Åström's A little bit is on 3rd position. The real winners of the poll are, of course, those who placed as low as possible! Here’s the Top 16:

  1. Jasmine - Niin kaunis on taivas (1996)
  2. Kojo - Nuku pommiin (1982)
  3. Nina Åström - A little bit (2000)
  4. Pave - Yamma Yamma (1992)
  5. Jari Sillanpää - Takes 2 to tango (2004)
  6. Vesa-Matti - Loiri Huilumies (1980)
  7. Waldo´s People - Lose control (2009)
  8. Edea - Aava (1998)
  9. Viktor Klimenko - Aurinko laskee länteen (1965)
  10. Beat - Fri? (1990)
  11. Fredi ja Ystävät - Pump-pump (1976)
  12. CatCat - Bye Bye Baby (1994)
  13. Boulevard - Nauravat silmät muistetaan (1988)
  14. Riki Sorsa Reggae OK (1981)
  15. Laila Halme Muistojeni laulu (1963)
  16. Päivi Paunu & Kim Floor Muistathan (1972)

To answer a question, Pave (Maijanen) was a star in the 60-70's in such bands as Pepe & Paradise, Wigwam (producer) and had his own band Mistakes with whom they had such hits as Pidä huolta (Take care).

After that on a solo career in mid 1980's he had several big hits (covers and his own songs) in Finland; such as Kuume (Fever), Lilja, ruusu ja kirsikkapuu (Scarborough Fair) and perhaps his biggest hits Lähtisitkö? (Would you go?) and Jano (Thirst) which were his own songs.

No one remembered him on 1992, but on 1997 -2002 he was the fourth person on Mestarit - tour (with Kirka, Hector and Pepe Willberg, all very well known Finnish musicians) and the concerts were more or less sold out.

Nowadays he is more of a song writer / producer - at least I have not heard any new songs from him for a long time.

Boo!! Hiss!! I loved 'Niin Kaunis on Taivas'!!

What a lot of fuss about the word 'wrongest'. Some people seriously need to lighten up. 'Wrongest' is a modern, young colloquialism. If it was being used during serious television news or in a serious article it would be grammatically incorrect. But it isn't, and the use of the inverted commas shows that the editors know exactly what they are doing. The word has come to have a specific meaning all of its own and is perfectly acceptable - and correct - within the context.

@ Andy Deleanu
For Christ's sake give over will ye! - it's a feckin joke...

I swear some people on this site will complain about anything just for the sake of a good moan

I think the 'wrongest' Finnish entry has to be the crap that they have selected in 2010 :P

It's quite incomprehensible that such a word as "wrongest" is being used here.

To be a 'credible' English language news source, esctoday staff must have the necessary skills to portray their ideas clearly through correct uses of grammar, not this made-up "international English". If this was another language, i.e. French, it would simply not be allowed.

I do not believe past BS that the level of English is appropriate for the audience who may or may not understand the language so well. That would be undermining your audience, and now they know even less about proper grammar because you are using words such as "wrongest"

ha! Edea and Jasmine are among my favourite ESC songs of all time, let alone among entries from Finland. The 'wrongest' thing in both cases were the awful perms!

I think that Nina Åström had a great song in Stockholm :D

The biggest failure was sending Nina Åström - A Little bit instead of Nightwish - Sleepwalker.
That year 2000 we also had Anna Eriksson - Oot voimani mun
( You are my strength ). Good song and a powerful voice.

Was Pave a big star in the country at the time?
He sang the theme tune to the Disney cartoon Ducktales:

I think this is undeserved. Jasmine was pretty good actually, one of the better Finnish entries.

And of course, their biggest mistake ever was not sending Nightwish!

WHAT??? Reggae OK was good and among the best that year! Also, Pump-pump is a true Eurovision classic! lol. Certainly not the wrong choice! ;)

I think Geir Rönning was a wrong choice for them. And that scary Laura lady sometime in the 00s

Tonite's selection (even though in the wrong arena perhaps..) was not that good. I wanted Cider Hill to win and was SO glad that Eläkeläiset or Amadeus did not win. If Hulluna humpasta would have won it would have stolen the title of worst entry ever in Eurovision/Finland from Yamma yamma/someone else...

But like the girls say, one can earn your living by working (more or less what Työlki ellää means in English), so fingers cross for them - as long as they change the outfits of the boys........

JM
sorry whoever did her hair, make up etc surely lost her a few points when she could have been in the bottom 5 instead of last! LOL! and so what is your opinion as a native Finn, about tonight's selection?
Thorazin
ok, in Stuttgart, I went there once with my job (and to Dortmund!) and I should say to everyone in euroland here that the people there were one of the friendliest and most helpful that I have ever met in my trips around Europe, really I (and my colleagues) still have that good memory of our time there!!

I don't think Waldo's song should be among the 10 worst songs. Actually the song was good, the problem was the performance of the group. The worst song by far is Yamma Yamma and then Jasmine
But this year Finland has an excellent song. Congratulations!!!

J M [57239]

In my opinion (and I am Finnish) Yamma yamma is BY FAR the worst entry from Finland, one of the worst entries ever in ESC. I remember how ashamed I was to be Finnish in that particular year.

And what Jasmine's horrendous hairdo concerns, it is thanks to a NORWEGIAN hair stylist who did her hair - cause Finland did not bring their own to Oslo...
