Greece: Katerine Avgoustakis disqualified
After the announcement of the titles of the songs taking part in this year's Greek preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest, it was discovered that a remix of the song Enjoy the day submitted by Katerine Avgoustakis had been available on youtube since 5th November 2009. According to the rules of the Greek broadcaster, though, no part of the songs could be made available before the official presentation which will take place on 5th March. Today, during a meeting of ERT executives it was decided, as expected, that the song and the singer should be disqualified for breeching the rule.
The Avgoustakis' candidacy had been heavily discussed in the Greek press since the summer even before ERT officially extended their call for songs to the various local record labels. It was widely known afterwards that the singer's team reviewed many possible songs to end up with Enjoy the day.
It should be made clear that although the EBU sets the general rules applying to the participating songs, each broadcaster is free to set their own rules as long as there is no conflict with the EBU ones. For example, althought the EBU rule states that the songs cannot have been made available before October 1st, each individual broadcaster can choose to set a different limit after this date or non at all.
These are the eight songs in the order they will appear in the Greek final on 12th March.
1 Christos Chatzinasios- Illusion
2. Second skin - Game of life
3. Manos Pyrovolakis with Eleni Furreira and Don't Ask (Yannis Bantourakis) - I kivotos tou Noe (Noah's Ark)
4. Yiorgos Alkaios and Friends - Opa
5. Yiorgos Karadimos - Polemao (I am fighting)
6. Melisses - Kinezos (China man)
7. Émigré - Touch me deep inside
8. Eleftheria Eleftheriou - Tables are turning

@ ben
thats true what you say , but the BIG greek singers (that sing in greek and more traditional mix) dont wanna go to the eurovision !!!! Greece has a lot of great music and we send the last year more pop music (wich is fine) but i wanna hear greek again!
Fingers crossed
@demitri calling
well its fine doing it now again but it seems greece has been making a thing of sending foriegners, i mean yes 05,06 and 08 were all good entrys but were not hearing the true greece and i think every now and again it would be nice to hear some music that actual sounds greek, cause alot of greek music is actually really good, i just think its a shame, i mean if malta with its 400,000 people can nearly win like 3 times, im sure greece can find something amazing with natives other than sakis!
which is why im hoping a song in greek or a bilingual one is sent
Katerine gave a press conference earlier today...She was very sad with all this and she said tha ERT didn't bother to inform her first..She just found out about her disqualification from the press...They said that she shoudn't bother coming back to Greece as there was nothing else to talk about...Totally unprofessional...
the eurovision entry of her song was givento the journalists gathered at the press conference so i guess we will have it soon...
@ Koen
Yes there are always been like that!
Actually, before this, i wasn't bothered with Katerine. I didn't care, but Oikotimes have been making such a nast campaign against her, that now i'm rooting for her.
Has oikotimes always been this biased? That's not a newssite, just a tabloid and if you say something they don't like, you get banned.
I think there'll be a sollution soon. ERT is prepaired to talk with Katerine and her entourage to find a sollution that all the parties can find themselves in.
If the disquallification was defined, ERT wouldn't want to negotiate, would they?
christina you are right! check my email for further info !thanks
Stupid Erts people!!!! They managed to disqualify the most charismatic and promising candidate. Congragulations!!!!!!
Hope that the jury wont change publics choice as it happened in 2003 when people voted for yiannis vardis and the juries for mando. Or in 2001 when the public voted for antique (very narrow victory at least) and the jury another artist.
Now everyone can win depends on the performance and the song. Remember what happened in 2007 when everyone expected dantis or tamta and sarbel won.
yes!Maria is very successful in the U.S.She has her own show at E!entertainment i think.But people will say that they don't care because they find her annoying!lol...
paul c
You know that Menounos was the first journalist interviewed Obama with his wife and kids?
paul c
ok!i see!you mean the greek hostess of the final,maria menounos!
ben calamoto
I can't really understand you!Why should we only have greek singers living in Greece for all their life and having both parents greek?
playa del sol
don't worry!She won't take part in the greek final.ERT cleared it out.They won't accept any other entry as the deadline for song submissions is over.You can now sleep peacefully!
As for melisses, i like them too but i watched one of their live performances and the vocal part was rather weak...I hope this was an exception and he really has a strong voice...
@dimitris calling
Er if you look back and read my post correctly I said "Greek PRESENTER" in 2006, not Greek singer...If you must know I love Ana and her songs, so perhaps not so "childish" after all? (like the woman presenter seemed to be..)
well you see now we have a national final with greek born artists and the option to see the greek langauge in eurovision again, im not arsed about the fact she's gone..
btw guys, on digital spy, i saw the headline "sugababes confirmed for eurovision show" which at first i thought they were going to perform and jade was to return again, but apartly there going to just perform there song during the voting, but... its on the 12th march the show, so it seems this year the uk is leaving it till the last minute... bad move i think
I am not really sorry for her because I feel this is a publicity stunt to give her more promotion and get her in the headlines. It is probably a whole media game. Wait and see!!!!!!! If she is allowed to take part again then I am proven right. WATCH OUT!
I would love a nice ethnic ballad from Greece. In Terzis Pasxalis style
I feel sorry for this girl though ... I'm sure it wasn't her fault
good for me, i want melises for greece ;something new , different and simply great so go melisses
@ dimitris calling
Yeah, i know what you meant. I think we all wish and hope the same. No more trash, no more average for the greek participation.
I am hoping for something different this year. I like melisses, the band! Let's hope " China Man " has something to say!
GOOD NEWS!!! i hated that this was the fan favourite for so long! and i strongly disbelieve in singers from other countries representing foreign ones...in this case its ok cos she is part Greek...but in the case of cyprus this year! WTF! how can cypriots be proud to send something that has no link to their country!
i wonder when the "katerine avgoustakis will participate with a diff song in the greek nf" article comes out
she needs to submit a different song and all will be fine.
actually this whole saga might help her candidacy a lot.
Good luck Greece
@erika
i don't think you understood my comment...My wish is that the greek public won't fall for another cheap eastern pop dance song that Alkaios has to offer...
@Konstantinos GR
She will deffinetely have a good song... she s not stupid.
Katerine's team are doing a very good promo for her before the competition even starts. She s the only person out the 9 participants so far that she is constantly in the news... OF COURSE the song that was revealed was NOT the song that she was planning to compete with from the beginning... it s just a trick to keep her on media. Bravo Katerine, I am sure that this song could not be possibly picked by to represent Greece and I am confident that you will give your best shot for Greece.
Katerine with her club dance music and her performance will give some fresh air in greek entry
And of course club dance music is highly popular in eurovision.......NOT!
angelito
OMG thats great news...thank you so much.......I hope she ll have a good song in such a little time left.
GO Katerine.....I support you.
Guys take it easy, it seems like only the song has been disqualified and not Katerine herself.
She'll submit a different song:
