It's for you

Ireland sends Niamh Kavanagh to Eurovision

The Irish national final to determine the country's representative at this year's Eurovision Song Contest was held tonight. Five acts were competing and eventually it was decided that Niamh Kavanagh will represent Ireland in Oslo with the song It's for you written by Niall Mooney, Marten Eriksson, Lina Eriksson & Jonas Gladnikoff.

Niamh Kavanagh has already won the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 for Ireland with the song In your eyes. Niall Mooney and Jonas Gladnikoff also co-wrote Et cetera, the Irish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009.

esctoday.com national final awards 2010

The 2010 esctoday.com National Final Awards will be held between April and May, which means between the national final season and the Eurovision Song Contest. We will repeat the same format with two rounds for nominations which was used this year - you can read how it works here. However, this time the individual polls for each country will always be held right after the national final, when the entries are still fresh. You can vote for your favourite performance not to qualify in the Irish national final here and for your favourite song not to qualify here.

Niam Kavanagh will compete for Ireland in the second half of the second semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, to be held on May 27th.

A very nice typical Irish song, I love the flute. :D Congratulations on a good choice Ireland, may you feel welcome to Norway and Oslo in May, and have the best of luck in ESC 2010 :)

Work on the entire song and performance Niamh if you want to make the final. Very disappointed on the choices (none) we were given last Friday. It was a no-brainer who was going through as the rest were so blatantly bad. Lets hope there are poor choices in Oslo too then we might even win.

I didn't notice that Ireland sends again Niamh.
In 1993 I was realy happy that she won. She deserved it.
But this song is nothing special to me. But at least is much much better than last years song.
Every year and I mean every year I was waiting the Irish entry to see something good.
I wish you all the best!!
Kisses from Greece.

Wow - what a dull song. That aside, I've never forgiven her beating little Sonia in 1993 :)

Not a memorable ballade from Ireland either....

Can't understand the complaints about her looking her age now. I mean she obviously did not see a plastic surgery and a lot of women do look like that in her early 40's. Only on TV every star has done some surgery and so we lose the realistic view on aging. Nevertheless the dress and the hairdo were dreadful, but that's not nature, that's a question of taste ;-)

Haven't heard the other entries Karl so if they suck like you say then Niamh stands a great chance of actually making the final. Gosh perhaps she may even run away with it as the other 4 songs in our 'Open' National Song Contest (yeah right) sucked too and she...em... won that. Perhaps she and her backing singers should dress up as leprechauns to keep the authentic 'oirsh' feeling going along with the flute.

Finally! All that praying and leprachaun dancing paid off! Ireland would definitely go into the finals for this one! I think Ireland's going to win this year, because after seeing most of the entries being sent from other countries, most of them kinda sucked. Oh well, we'll see later this May.

Oh dear Niamh 'It's For You' is not for me and it is not for the top spot in Oslo either. If you somehow reach the final then you can count your lucky stars or nostaglic votes from those re-living 1993. I nearly fell asleep towards the end of the song. You'll need to replace the flute with a big bass drum to keep the voters awake.

Well done Niamh! I think this has what it takes, the song certainly gives me goosebumps! As the UK is allowed to vote in Ireland's semifinal, It should certainly make the final. Good to hear Ireland stepping up a gear!

Gosh Tony you must be related to Niahmh to take it so personally. Everyone is entitled to their opinion you know. Some here will like the singer/song and some won't so get used to it.

Poppycock to the lot of you....What a great song and a what an even more super singing performance,i think it will be very popular on the night...Well done Niamh, will speak soon x

Unfortunately Irish eyes will not be smiling come May as Niamh and her tiresome balad will fail miserably. Even if by some miracle she gets in to the top ten it will still be a failure for her as she has won it before so the only way is down. Remember too Niamh it is not the 'Rocky Horror Show' so please make some effort with your appearance for Oslo.

Well done Niamh a solid performance which am sure you'll get even more confident with as you perform it more and more! Definitely the best song on the night (I also loved Fashion Queen as it was different and quite fun but the other three songs were dross. Goodness knows how bad the other 300 or so songs must have been for them to be picked or did the panel of Linda Martin (yawn) & co actually listen to them all? Hopefully Lee Bradshaw will get the message and not bother anymore as he's not good enough and has no appeal - get back to your restaurant fella)
Now for 'It's For You'. A bit of tweaking is definitely needed before Oslo in order tp make it stand out (ie as Johnny Logan said, try for an extra key change (but only if it is possible and she can deliver) to make the song's build up to the finale really stand out, make the lighting change as she does the key change to give a more dramatic effect, Please RTE team make sure the staging is right and well lit throughout the performance (think Iceland last year), Make sure the backing singers don't sound so shrill. and finally but most imprtantly, get a decent stylist in to do Nimah's hair,make-up and a more flattering dress (last night she looked dreadful am sorry to say) and keep the camera focused aove the waist limiting those wide/long shots as they didn't work last night. With these elements adressed and perfected I think Niamh could actually do well.
Now go sell it girl!

I love ballads and I enjoy Ireland's entries usually, but this is dreary. No structure in the melody and the bridges are weak.
Unlike many others, I don't think this will get past the semi-finals unless a LOT of work is done on arrangement and presentation.
