LIVE

The show opens with the audience performing some classic Portuguese Eurovision Song Contest entries.

Simone de Oliveira, Portuguese representative in 1965 and 1969 now performs her 1969 entry Desfolhada Portguesa, one of the most famous songs in Portugal ever.

1. Rui Nova - Uma canção à Cid (O sol e as estrelas)

Current esctoday.com poll result: 11th (0.6%)

The first entry is a rather old-fashioned mid-tempo song. Although the performer is rather charming and trying very heart to entertain the audience, the overall impression is not lasting. Generally a nice effort, but definitely not a winner.

2. Ricardo Martins - Caminheiro de mim

Current esctoday.com poll result: 12th (0%)

Another song that could not be called partcularly modern. Nevertheless, it is very Portuguese and reminds of earlier entries in the contest. The singer doesn't seem to manage to capture the attention of the audience and he also does not seem to feel at ease on stage. Considering the unlucky draw position, he might not be a favourite tonight.

3. Nuno & Fábia - Amar (Vieste para me salvar)

Current esctoday.com poll result: 6th (2.3%)

We stay in the genre "Classic Portuguese Eurovision songs". The duo deliver a charming performance and they seem to connect on stage although the style is not quite what you might expect from people of their ages. The song is quite catchy but it is not sure if it would stay long enough in the heads of the televoters in the Eurovision Song Contest.

4. David Navarro - Quem é que será?

Current esctoday.com poll result: =8th (1.2%)

Qué será, será, whatever will be, will be... another rather classic song, although it features a very slight rock feeling. Generally a pretty repetitive effort that might be overseen in the line-up.

5. Catarina Pereira - Canta por mim

Current esctoday.com poll result: 1st (61.6%)

The first real up-tempo song tonight. Canta por mim is a typical up-tempo summer pop song, which kinda clashes with current season. The vocal performance is not flawless, but that is not a shame considering the exhausting dance performance. This song is likey to qualify, but it has to be mentioned that Spain finished second last in Moscow with a song in a very similar style. The performance suits the song, although it is unusure why it feaures a pretty random wind machine.

6. Filipe Delgado - Serei eu

Current esctoday.com poll result: 7th (1.7%)

Back to classics. This ballad might work well as background muzak in a smokey bar, but it is probably too repetitive for the Eurovision Song Contest. The singer still delivers a strong vocal performance and he seems to live the song. Again, the use of the wind machine seems a bit random here.

7. V-Boy - Quando eu penso em ti

Current esctoday.com poll result: =4th (2.9%)

The first more modern song tonight. Quando eu penso em ti is a relaxed R&B style song, which would be something quite new in the Eurovision Song Contest. The vocal performance is strong and teh stage performance suits the song very well. This one would probably not stand out in the R&B music scene, but it does in the Festival da canção.

8. Terra D'Água - Amanhã no mar

Current esctoday.com poll result: =4th (2.9%)

A folklorsitic entry is up next. The chorus is far more catchy than the the verses but the overall song is a bit lengthy. It might still be Portugal's first choice if they want to go for something traditional. The background images are very sweet.

9. Nina Pinto - Meu coração não é meu

Current esctoday.com poll result: 2nd (19.8%)

As Nina Pinto is a member of the editorial team of esctoday.com, we do not comment on this entry for the sake of fairness.

10. Gonçalo Tavares - Rios

Current esctoday.com poll result: =8th (1.2%)

Rios is an entertaining up-tempo song with a catchy melody. The singer is very enthusiastic and so is the audience. Not an innovative entry, but one that should have high chances of reaching the final.

11. Banda Trocopasso - O mundo de pernas para o ar

Current esctoday.com poll result: =8th (1.2%)

The penultimate song is a folk-pop-rock song with a catchy melody. The vocal performance is very strong, but the singer looks a bit too aggressive, which might scare the televoters in the Eurovision Song Contest and sort of clashes with the happy background images. Nevertheless a strong entry, that could well qualify for the final.

12. Seis Po' Meia Dúzia - Pássaro saudade

Current esctoday.com poll result: 3rd (4.7%)

The second semi final closes with a very nostalgic, but very charming entries. The song, the performance, the outfits - nothings seems to be from this century. An interesting concept and the outcome in the Eurovision Song Contest seems to be unpredictable.

A recap is shown with all twelve performances.

Our poll will be closed in five minutes.

Our poll is closed now. You can find the updated results above.

The results are coming in.

Banda Trocopasso to the final!

Ricardo Martins to the final!

Seis Po' Meia Dúzia to the final!

Catarina Pereira to the final!

Gonçalo Tavares to the final!

Rui Nova to the final!

@ Willox Willox

Maybe Catarina will win the televote, but RTP mafia (juri) will make sure that she has no real chances of going to Oslo. You just wait and see!

No matter the song we sent we'll never receive high points from Eastern countries, and those countries are the ones who rule the voting nowadays. The only countries who can give us good points are Spain, France, Switerland, Germany, Andorra and maybe also UK and Ireland, let's see.

Vanessa
Seis Po' Meia Dúzia
These 2 are the only ones who stood out for me...
I guess Cararina will get the douze from the televoters but the jury will vote differently.

Good luck Portugal!

I suggest you friendly: Vanessa "Alvorada"
But Filipa is good too for me!
Vanessa is for Oslo! ;)

"Something has to change in who's selecting songs for FdC"

Unfortunately that's not gonna change anytime soon. Not as long as RTP is our representant. If they thought they could loose exclusivity, or if they did loose exclusivity for a couple of years, then maybe something would change. But that's not gonna happen unfortunately.

Rui Nova qualified because José Cid's fans voted for him. for sure they thought it's great that they're "idol" has some followers. In fact, Rui Nova's song title "uma canção à Cid" was cinically thought targeting that audience. Because in what way does Rui Nova's song resemble any of José Cid's?

Then Ricardo Martins qualified because of the handicapped people lobby. It's either that or people felt sorry for him for being blind. Because it sure wasn't because of his vocals that he qualified.

Something has to change in who's selecting songs for FdC but also people's minds has to change 'cuz people love to vote in some pimba and bad quality songs... they vote just 'cuz it's funny or just what people are used to hear when they go to a local party (bailarico).

I also felt the same with "Há dias assim"
It's beautiful.

To tell you the truth i don't even remember any of the other 21 songs, cause they were all forgetable.
i seriously think something has to change about who is selecting songs in FdC. It sucks that the quality of the majority is so poor!
My opinion!

Vanessa, Filipa Azevedo and Catarina really stood out for me, but after tonight i'm much more towards the ballads.

I understand wht you mean but just imagine the chance of seeing Rui Nova on Oslo and then you will love the idea of choosing Catarina Pereira or Seis Po' Meia Dúzia.

From the four favourite I have, Filipa Azevedo was the one who made me fell in love with her song and performance. Vanessa was also catching.

...are the only good options we have

Only? I mean... having to choose one song from four choices i wouldn't call it "Only", especially when we're referring to Festival da canção, well at least in recent years.
I'm already glad for being undecided between two :O :)

I totally agree with you João Henriques,

Filipa Azevedo
Vanessa
Catarina Pereira
Seis Po' Meia Dúzia

are the only good options we have.

Good luck for the four of them.

Indeed, the word 'painfull' describes this second national semi-final. This was an horror... I don't understand why the group 'Terra D'água' didn't make it into the final while Rui Nova and Ricardo Martins did. I don't even understand why we have to see people like v-boy, Nina Pinto and Filipe Delgado on stage since they're definitly not singers!

Eventhough I can 'save' 3 songs:
Catarina Pereira - Canta Por Mim
Seis Po' Meia Dúzia - Pássaro Saudade
Terra D'água - Amanhã no mar (this one didn't make it)

Although I can find a few interesting songs I am really said about my country's performance on our national contest this year... Shame on us!

@Adérito

I absolutely have no idea but it was awkward and painful to watch.

@Marko

Why do you think "Alvorada" has better chances in Oslo than "Há dias assim"?
If i had to vote now i would go for Filipa, she was a Lioness on stage, loved her (L)
The thing with Vanessa is that she has HUGE stage experience, she can perform flawless anytime but then again Filipa seemed unbelievably secure on stage :)
Wich of these two can guarantee more votes in Oslo? Help :S :)

Can anybody explain me 1 thing: why did they start to show who were the qualifiers, then halfway through put on José Cid, and the the other 3? Did they forget about José Cid??????? Or was José Cid for some reason not ready on due time???

Vanessa or Filipa to Eurovision! I'm not asking, this is not an opinion! I DEMAND! LOL
from today's (yestarday's ....it's 1 am) show selection only nº 12 grew a little bit on me BUT not even close Vanessa or Filipa.
Can pick one of them...what am I going to do?
One of them will have to conquer my heart in the final! Can't wait!

Catarina Pereira will be this year's Luciana Abreu: the hot favourite that fails miserably.

And studio version of "Canta por mim" is nice, but live it isn't! :(
Vote for Vanessa, If not than just vote once for me! :)

I agree with you 100%!
But vote for Vanessa in the final, please, she has the best chance to do well for Portugal in Oslo! Believe me! I know and feel that! ;)

Filipa Azevedo and Vanessa's songs are growing a lot on me.
I actually think Filipa and Vanessa were the best of both semis by a mile.
Filipa Azevedo was a huge surprise (L), not that i didn't like her song "Há dias assim" but i think i understimate her capacity to perform live and defending such a great song. I was wrong!
Also huge surprise was how bad "Canta por mim" sounded and looked on stage, the whole thing was a mess, vocals, choreography, the camera plans, everything.
Although i love Catarina and "Canta por mim"; it just didn't work for me.
Filipa Azevedo is now my favorite! :)
I don't care if we're going again with a ballad anymore!
