LIVE

The show has started.

A vocal group is performing cover versions of famous songs.

1. Filipa Galvão Telles - O amor não sabe

Current esctoday.com poll result: 5th (3.2%)

The first song is also the most relaxed one tonight. The style is very unusual for the Eurovision Song Contest, but it creates a special Portuguese feeling. The vocals are strong and the simple stage perofrmance suits the song perfectly.

2. Banda Trocopasso - O mundo de pernas para o ar

Current esctoday.com poll result: 10th (1.6%)

The second song is more energetic. Although it sounds like it could have already represented Portugal in the 1980s, it is a strong and catchy number. The vocals are flawless and the stage performance suits the song.

3. Jorge Guerreiro - Ai Lisboa

Current esctoday.com poll result: 9th (2.4%)

Jorge Guerreiro brings a Salsa feeling on stage, mixed with folk music. Altough his facial expressions are a bit serious and not as seductive as you might expect in a performance of a song of that style, he seems to feel at ease on stage. The song is catchy but very repetitive in the chorus.

4. Ricardo Martins - Caminheiro de mim

Current esctoday.com poll result: =6th (2.8%)

Another song that could not be called partcularly modern. Nevertheless, it is very Portuguese and reminds of earlier entries in the contest. The singer doesn't seem to manage to capture the attention of the audience and he also does not seem to feel at ease on stage.

5. The Agency - É assim que as coisas são

Current esctoday.com poll result: =6th (2.8%)

Another ballad. The lead vocalist delivers a very emotional performance but the song itself might lack some highlight. The Blues Brothers outfits are interesting but it is unsure how they are supposed to reflect the song. The audience still seems to love this song.

6. Seis Po' Meia Dúzia - Pássaro saudade

Current esctoday.com poll result: 4th (5.6%)

A very nostalgic, but very charming entriy. The song, the performance, the outfits - nothings seems to be from this century. An interesting concept and the outcome in the Eurovision Song Contest seems to be unpredictable.

7. Nuno Pinto - Fogo lento

Current esctoday.com poll result: =6th (2.8%)

Nuno Pinto performs a mid-tempo pop song with some minor rock influences. He tries to entertain the audience, which seems a bit forced at some points as does the overall performance. Nevertheless, he delivers a solid vocal performance. The song gets rather monotonous in the second half but might still do well tonight.

8. Catarina Pereira - Canta por mim

Current esctoday.com poll result: 1st (56.4%)

The first real up-tempo song tonight. Canta por mim is a typical up-tempo summer pop song, which kinda clashes with current season. The vocal performance is not flawless, but that is not a shame considering the exhausting dance performance. This song is likey to do well, but it has to be mentioned that Spain finished second last in Moscow with a song in a very similar style. The performance suits the song, although it is unusure why it feaures a pretty random wind machine.

9. Filipa Azevedo - Há dias assim

Current esctoday.com poll result: 3rd (6.0%)

Filipa brings a pianist along with a piano on stage, which suits this classic ballad very well (although the oversized candle on top of it looks a bit random). Another performance that features a wind machine, but in fact, it goes well with the dynamic background images. The vocal performance is flawless and emotional.

10. Gonçalo Tavares - Rios

Current esctoday.com poll result: 11th (1.2%)

Rios is an entertaining up-tempo song with a catchy melody. The singer is very enthusiastic and so is the audience. Not an innovative entry, but one that should have high chances of doing well tonight.

11. Vanessa - Alvorada

Current esctoday.com poll result: 2nd (14.4%)

Vanessa brings all classc elements of a ballad on stage: White outfits, a strings quartet, a wind machine and a very dramatic vocal performance that could be considered "classic Eurovision". This one is for those who like their ESC entries classic and it is for sure that there are plenty of them out there. The reaction by the audience is enthusiastic.

12. Rui Nova - Uma canção à Cid (O sol e as estrelas)

Current esctoday.com poll result: 12th (0.8%)

The last entry is a rather old-fashioned mid-tempo song. Although the performer is rather charming and trying very heart to entertain the audience, the overall impression is not lasting. Generally a nice effort, but definitely not a winner.

Our poll is closed for voting now. You can find the updated results above.

The voting has started. 20 regional juries will give their verdict.

Filipa Azevedo leads in the jury voting.

Filipa Azevedo has won the jury voting ahead of The Agency and Vanessa.

Flor-de-Lis now perform their 2009 entry Todas as ruas do amor

Filipa Azevedo has won the national final and will represent Portugal in Oslo.

@ Jared Silverstone

Augusto Madureira, the composer, is a journalist from SIC (one of the private channels).

Finally Portugal had a opportunity to send an uptemp song to ESF, although the singer Catarina needed some singingpratice........skip the jury, theyhave a bad influence again! The best ESF-song didn't win :-(

Looool... WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG choice!!!

Filipa seems to be sweet but THIS NOT A GOOD SONG TO SEND >TO EUROVISION! LOOOL

She is pretty but she is pitchy in some high notes... she goes out of tune... the performance seems to be copying ours from the UK last year, "My Time" by Jade and L.A.L.Webber. And that's a good song for the 90's... nowadays, it's a poor and meaningless song... (yeah, I heard the english version... no sense).

And was that comfortable jury from VianaDoCastelo joking about the jury voting system???

(Dear God, how did you lost the chance to succeed in ESC with Catarina and how did a lot of juries gave "None", "1" or "2" points to Vanessa??? LOOOOOL No sense again!)

And, so the guy who compose the song and who's playing the piano for Filipa is actually a TV Journalist from RTP... LOOOOL

Catarina was fine, what "remove" her passport to Oslo was the fact that the author of Felipas song is a well know journalist among the members of the jury... the major part of the juries were journalists... see the conection???? he actualy is the big winner not Felipa...

Joao Martinho [61630]

Catarina did not perform well her song, she seemed more focused on the dance steps and that removed her passport to Oslo. Now, lets focus ahead and make the best to upgrade Filipa song (that candle...ugh, the piano player going away...why?)

Thias song not even in Chinese will do well in the ESC... Portugal juries are officialy deaf... what a disaster this is going to be...

This song will be CRUCIFIED by the other Ballads... The best National final that RTP realised in years with a VERRY SAD outcome.... It's official Portugal does NOT want to do well in the ESC...

I am sick of people comparing Canta Por Mim to Soraya's song in 2009--the Spanish song had strong Greek influences, Canta Por Mim has the Portuguese guitar at its core, with lyrics based on a Portuguese legend and Baltic influences courtesy of Babjic. Soraya's song suffered from being performed last after more polished dance/pop songs (Always, Dum Tek Tek) in a year that had many of these fast/dance-beat songs. Soraya also had that laughable "magic act" where she "disappeared"--that all doomed her. Canta Por Mim would've been one of the few dance songs this year, unfortunately we get another insipid ballad.

@Fabio

As u said, the same apply to English singers in Spanish (or to some Italian singers trying to sing in Spanish).

If you're not good enough in a language, don't make a fool of yourself :P

The Portuguese spoke and they want Catarina to ESC...Felipa was the 4th, not 1st, not 2nd, not even the 3rd choice. RTP should be ashamed to get a jury that does not have similar tastes as the Portuguese people. Most people on the jury were professors of music--not people that are relevant to the music industry...any time there was someone younger on the jury or working at radio stations versus universities and conservatories, they picked Alvorada or Canta Por Mim...RTP has some explaining to do!!!!

(I don't understand Portugese, so maybe it goes along with the song), but where does the piano player go during the song that won?

@ Eurovision 5 - Coral 0:

The same applies to any USA/UK singer that 'pretend' to sing in Spanish! Have you ever heard Bon Jovi's Spanish versions of his ballads? LOL! I barely understand a couple of words! I also remember when I dared to download the Spanish album that Bucks Fizz released in the early 80's. That one is even worse, I couldn't understand a single word...

Sometimes I feel that when someone 'dares' to record in English, they must have a perfect BBC accent. But when it's the other way around, a Brit or American singing in Spanish, Italian, whatever, they are not so critizised, even if their accent is awful and almost impossible to descipher.

Charlotte Rulzzz [46321]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:53:10

lol "@ Eurovision 5 - Coral 0" that's so pathetic of whoever wrote it...

Spain 2005, gives up an amazing song from Coral, finishes at 21
Spain 2006 same story
Spain 2008 Same thing but finishes at 16. WOW

seems to me like Spain is the real loser for not sending Coral

:$ Coral :$ (L) She's amazing!!! another country would give her the respect she deserves with a private preselection, but Spain are keen on losing in esc ...it's been like that since 2004, why risk breaking the tradition by sending a good song, huh?

G NIGHT CORAL BASHERS.
Spain lost. Not Coral.

Well THAT goes down as one of the alltime dumbest!
I had every breathe of support and excitement that the Portugese may finally get their ESC win after so many years, and how happy they would be - but along came a bunch of boring, ugly, layabout, tone deaf juries one after another to shut down Portugals party.
One of the biggest embarresments in Eurovision and a total dissrespect to your citizens and their votes. Shame on you....I just hope you stuck round long enough to hear all those people booing you!

Axel L [33654]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:48:50

That was quite funny to watch how people were booing the winner... That means it all..

@Frank Albers
We'll see in May...

Internal selection in Portugal? Ouch, even worse. I say we should return to 100% televote again, at least some of the viewers know what songs have a better chance of winning in Europe, rather in Portugal. We're choosing a song for EUROPE, not a song for PORTUGAL! And yes, for the 46th time, we aren't going to win the ESC.

All the people were complaining last year because Soraya's song reminded them of other Greek songs and 'La noche es para mí' was nothing new...

Now Catarína gets the support from all the eurofans and, let me tell you, 'Canta pra mim' doesn't bring anything to the contest either.

And with this I'm not defending Filipa's song either which, btw, I find boring... As I wrote last Thursday, my favourite band in FdC (Terra D'Água) didn't qualify. And when that happened, I started caring a d*mn about the whole NF :)

Fabio Deluca [37739]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:47:29

Laila, you can't complain much about the Portuguese song for being boring, when your own country is sending that pile of rubbish called "My Heart Is Yours". Laughable title, sounds like a song by Barney the Dinosaur... In terms of boredom, your Didrik really takes the lead here.

Frank Albers [12642]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:46:24

Surprising decision, but a good one!
Not Catarinas cheap and simple up-tempo song won but a little peace of good music.
Only the small group of hardcore eurovision fans fancy songs like "Cata por mim" or "Alvorada". That's why I think it's good for Portugal that this songs didn't make it.

Well done, Portugal!

No English version to Oslo!!

Another ballad in English??!? After watching the Ukranian NF and having to go through Vasyl's dreadful English pronounciation, I think enough it's enough... Singers should know where their limits are and if your English is cr*p then... DON'T SING IN IT!

Fabio Deluca [37739]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:42:45

I don't like Filipa's song, but Catarina's entry was not better. I find it really cheap, and she is not an incredible singer either. Reminds me of bad dancy songs like "Ven a bailar conmigo" and so on... The jury made terrible mistakes in 2006 (when they chose Nonstop!), but I think they were right in 2009 (Luciana Abreu's song was HORRIBLE!) and, maybe, in 2010 too. If I had to choose between Filipa and Catarina, I prefer Filipa. I think she's the less bad.

Karen W [60087]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:42:17

I agree with Timoteij, Filipa's song is not smth Portuguese too, actually it's far away of being it, but that's not important!!

James Betencourt [45719]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:41:13

well, I like the song but I hope they take the english version to eurovision!

ANNA MARIA! ! [32604]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:40:34

The song i love more won but i feel sad. I dont like this jurys system. I am angry and upset everytime the juries change the publics opinion. It happens in sweden in 2008 when the public didnt vote for charlote but the juries chose her. Failure in Belgrade. It happened in greece in 2003 when the public voted for yiannis vardis and the song mia stigmi and the juries for mando who failed in Latvia. Juries should vote only in the contest to eliminate diaspora and neigboring voting not in national finals. Is a shame.

Timoteij in Town [60047]

@ Eurovision 5 - Coral 0

And HOW exactly is Filipa's ballad more "Portuguese" than Catarina's?

sam s [54608]
Sun 7 Mar 2010 01:37:49

DID IT AGAIN. Portuguese juries DID it AGAIN... just like in 2006 when they sent NONSTOP instead of VANIA OLIVEIRA.
Even if i like filipa's song... I hope Portugal will have 0 points, maybe next time the'll choose "younger" juries....
