Greece: The Alkaios and Emigre interviews

With one more day to go until Greece choose their representative for the 2010 Eurovision song Contest, esctoday.com met with two of this year's candidates Yiorgos Alkaios and the Emigre band.

Yiorgos Alkaios is a well known name in the Greek music scene. This year he takes part in the running for the Eurovision Song Contest with Opa, a distinctively ethnic beat he wrote himself. Yiorgos spoke to Russell Davies in Athens about his song and more. He admits he is quite nervous about tomorrow as the competition is quite tough with many good songs. Yiorgos believes that due to the current situation in the world and Greece, the people just need to say Opa and move on. He presents his friends and assures us there will be no plate breaking on stage.

Emigre are a seven member band (cut down to six for Eurovision purposes) from Thessaloniki. Although relatively new in the Greek music scene, they are quite popular and have played together with some quite resounding names locally. Emigre together with Nektarios Tyrakis, the lyricist of Touch me deep inside who has already taken part in the Eurovision Song Sontest twice with Shake it and Love me tonight, spoke to esctoday.com. The band believe in their song and they state they have some aces up their sleeves for the night of Ellinikos Telikos (Greek Final). Their performance promises to be very theatrical.

Vote for your favourite in Ellinikos Telikos here.

has nothing to do with those by hadise and arash& aysel...there is a huge quality gap..!

Well, sorry, but I don't see any quality gap between Dum tek tek and Opa :P

Ush... Emigre's performance will be theatrical??? With a trashy, crappy song that goes "touch me deeeeeep inside"... I just can't think of anything worse this year. Seriously, if that AWFUL, shitty, cheesy song wins then it is heading straight to my bottom place. It's just horrifyingly bad.

Alkaios is at least... catchy... like the usual Greek songs have been. If you want to go for something new and fresh - choose Melisses! :D

@ Mina X

I mention it three comments below....trash and ethnic are two totally different things...turkey and azerbaijan (was azerbaijan ethnic ???) had two excellent and proffesional performances with some catchy elements...the performance by alkaios (i don't need to wait for the show to see it, it's very obvious it'll be similar to the presentation video..alkaios can't do much more at his age..!) has nothing to do with those by hadise and arash& aysel...there is a huge quality gap..!

juries will definately WILL NOT VOTE FOR THE TRASHY ALKAIOS SONG

It's not trashy just because you don't like it and since the juries voted for ethnic pop last year (Hadise) why can't they vote for Opa, too?

Mina, I hope you 'encouraged' your students to vote and vote wisely. (As in the songs that you like) :P

Mina
Do not hope, just tell them not to vote! :P

ethnic element and trush are two different things...azerbaijan and turkey had 2 euro pop dance entries with wonderful presentations...they were proffesional entries made for eurovision...in less than 23 hours we'll see the performances and we'll judge...I hope greece will take the right decision (and the jurie won't vote for the best known artist...in the 90's !!)

@Jim Sid,

All right, I will give you another example. 2006: International voters voted for "Welcome to the party". Greek voters for "Everything". 2 different song. 1 dance, the other a piano/rock ballad. Everything won, and got 9th place. Sure it had home turf advantage, but it was also amongst the favorites since it was chosen.

Regarding juries, I am sure you are in their minds and know what they will and will not vote. (rolls eyes). They seemed to have voted for Dum Tek Tek, Always, and others which all included ethnic elements with no problem at all.

Regardless, the public will vote on the best performance. End of story. It does not matter if you are a big name or not. Remember in 2007 everyone was saying Dantis was going to win? Greek voters said Dantis, International voters said Tamta. In the end Sarbel won. He had the best performance of the night.

@ greekboy

kalomoira and martakis both had the same eurovision dance style song europe voted that year...there was no essential difference...between second skin and alkaios there's a huge diiference..not to mention that in 2008 there were no juries..juries will definately WILL NOT VOTE FOR THE TRASHY ALKAIOS SONG...!!

@dimitris calling,

I'm sure it will be the usual members, including Plessas. As long as they do not put random members like they did in 2007. Remember a jury member in 2007 said they voted for Sarbel because his daughters wanted him to win? What a disgrace that was....

Greekboy0522 [24241]
Fri 12 Mar 2010 00:15:18

@Jim Sid,

In 2008, international voters picked Martakis in polls while Greek voters picked Kalomoira. Kalomoira won and she got 3rd place.

International voters are not always right. The Greek public will decide tomorrow night.

@Greekboy0522

I don't think Plessas voted for "my secret combination"(if he did)because of that.Plus,we don't really know the jury names yet!They should have gone public...Anyway i believe Karadimos will be a favourite for older jury memebers...Hatzinasios has a weak voice...

Greekboy0522 [24241]
Fri 12 Mar 2010 00:09:53

@dimitris calling,

The juries will prob. vote for Hatzinasios, since they are older jury members who are most likely friends with his father.

Remember in 2008 when Mimis Plessas said that Pantzis' father is a personal friend of his? (when announcing the votes)

dimitri,
teenagers love Kinezos, trust me. I'm a teacher and my students are crazy about it.

@Paschalis
i don't think teenagers love "kinezos"...I like Melisses a lot but i think the televoting will unfortunately be a close call between Pyrovolakis and Alkaios.That is if something really unpredictable happens during the live performance...I just hope the jury will give Alkaios what he deserves...That is no ticket to Oslo! :)

Fingers crossed for Second skin cos they rock!
Melisses is my second best. Let's hope Alkaios crashes big times ans Emigre are dreadful...Their band is a bad C Real copy and song sounds like " die for you " by Antique...why go for the copy cat when we have a much beter original?

' Game of life " for Greece!

Jim Sid [61352]
Thu 11 Mar 2010 22:17:01

game of life and second skin is the winner !!! probably alkaios will win because of his special aggrements with ERT and his trush song is going to ashame greek participation in oslo... :(

BUT SECOND SKIN WILL BE THE REAL WINNER !!!! :)

Emigre for the win!

Paschalis [24641]

Everyone forgets an important factor: the teenage votes. Teenagers voted for Kalomira and Sarbel. They will definitely vote for Melisses tomorrow. And as you know they are a big percentage of the televoting. I wouldn't be surprised in fact if Melisses won the televoting. But let's wait and see...

Good luck Giorgos and Friends. GO OPAAAAA !

Interesting Interviews :)

I like all of the songs but I still feel as though "Polemao" is the one for Eurovision!

Best of Luck Greece ;) (L)
