French song "to glow on Eurovision stage"
A few days ago, some of French eurofans who complained with the choice made by France 3's headquarters, received quite a long mail from the channel's service in charge of relations with viewers. Here's a summary of the answer:
"Jessy Matador is a young singer whose inspiration comes from rhythms of the Antilles, Africa, Jamaica and USA. You're not happy with this selection. You'd like France Télévisions to take the event seriously and with no other commercial operation. I regret that the choice doesn't fit your expectations. I thank you for your reaction which shows your interest for Eurovision. Be sure that France 3, France Télévisions and Jessy Matador really want to give the French participation an exceptional impact at the most prestigious European song contest. The artist, who was born in Congo, has all qualities to provide an original performance and make it possible for France to glow on the Eurovision stage: a festive and lively song, an imaginative performance, a unique and off-the-wall artistic universe, the experience of singing live and a great stage presence. Moreover, thanks to his dancing talent and good spirit, the artist will provide an absolute act!"
The answer goes on with reminders of previous non-French artists or artists singing in other languages than French with decent placing. On the fact that the song also aimed to be next Summer hit, with references to the football world cup, the answer states:
"Why should we stop the promotion of this positive music once the Eurovision Song Contest is over? We can give it a second breath during the World Cup. France Télévisions doesn't sacrify Jessy Matador in the name of promotion and marketing. On the contrary, thanks to the two events, the artist will have two extraordinary showcases to get popular amongst a large public".

I wonder where people get their ideas from... The first thing everyone can do is to check out an artist on youtube and you can see what is about to take part for France. And it most certainly hasn't anything to do with Ricky Martin and "boring rap". Does everything have to be an uptempo-song with "Hey"-chants and cheap dancing or a big ballad...?! There is so much more to music, people.
I think Jessy Matador is great but his style won't be appreciated by most of the ESC-audience (and especially Eastern European viewers). I lived in France for some time and saw that many people in France love this kind of music. So why not give it a chance and complain after you have heard the song?
All this whining in advance is really depressing.
i like jesse mata'dor. i think he does great dancefloor music. though i m a bit anxiuos that his style, well, asks to much of the esc audience. but still i hope it will be a great song and will do well in the contest.
I'm so looking forward to the French entry this year!!!
at least it won't be another dull ballad.
@ Benjamin Doyle
The possibilities of African rhythms interests me, as I don't think it's ever been tried at Eurovision.
Yes, it has already been tried! Check out 1990 French entry 'White and Black Blues'! It was runner up. It's one of my favourite Eurovision entries!
The possibilities of African rhythms interests me, as I don't think it's ever been tried at Eurovision. Only African nation to try an entry was Morocco, and their sound is different to Central Africa's sound.
The only thing which worries me is that they haven't even showcased the thing yet. If it's as good as France 3 is making it out to be, why not just release it so we can all take a look at it?
It's still uncertain whether it will be before or after next week's meeting of Heads of Delegation in Oslo.
This kind of news is really annoying. It's so tough for French to decide when the song should be released.
@Cristina
I did, shhhhhhh
I can't wait!
This might be another top 10!
I have to agree with DannyT
2007: Amazing and fun !!
2008: Amazing , crazy and increadibleeee !!
2009: Amazing , wonderful and beautiful..
My best French entry of the decade couldn't but be "Divine" ! I love it !!
But I have low hope for Jessy Matador :/
I believe that this song will be rubbish, but i will hear it first.
They have a point in saying that Eurovision songs are for more than Eurovision, if we believe it should be that inward looking then no wonder people hate Eurovision.
I would love to see Eurovision having the same impact on charts as Melodifestivalen in Sweden
However this could be just a rubbish rap.
I think this could end up being a darn catchy song! I'm looking forward to France's entry presentation as for me they'd be easily one of the best countries to watch in Eurovision and most underrated. Lets take a look back shall we:
2009 Amazing
2008 Amazing with bells on
2007 Amazing
I think that is a fairly accurate summary...
This is a good choice, I don't know why people complain. A worse option would be Christophe Willem or an average pop song/ballad by Emmanuel Moire. I like this choice, it means we will get another lively and up-tempo song this year which is GREATLY appreciated by me at least. I don't want a ballad-fest.
It also means we will get something new and original in ESC, something televoters almost never give us. I hope for more original and interesting internal selections next year.
The genre is interesting, now I just hope his song is good, equal to some of his previous songs or better.
French African... hhmm I hope something like Amadou & Mariam or Khadja Nin!
Zagreb: Yes of course!
It's not like I say everyone should hate those songs, or that my opinion is the only valid one. But during the last 20 years ballads in French (part from ethno ones) have become very clichéd, boring, dull, pompous, old-fashioned etc. for me in ESC! But in the 70s / 60s more of them were good, then they also seemed more modern, more in touch with other music, not just something contrived for ESC.
It seems France wants to be again in the bottom of the eurovision ranking. (with Switzerland probably)
Jessy Matador is totally unknown... Before to be heard, the song smells already like a stupid summer hymn. It will be a universal success :-))
he have influence from jamaica, usa,i smell a horrible boring rap,
And what do you wanna in ESC, only one genre to be in it!
he have influence from jamaica, usa,i smell a horrible boring rap,
That sounds promising. I love French entries and i have been voting for France since 2005!! It's cool they send a completely different Eurovision entry this time. I hope it's well performed with lots of dance routines and pls let it be unique.
I hope the next news from France will be the presentation of the song, I'm already a bit tired of their announcing of the song to be ready one nice day in future.
@The former TIMSRITNS
The fact that ballads aren't your favourite music genre doesn't mean that ballads having represented France are crap. On the contrary, some beautiful ballads are surely the best thing that France has given in the course of the history of ESC.
This sounds too much Ricky Martin for me.
I hope he has a good song
NOT a ballad from France? Which gives hope that might have a good song! And not another crappy, pompous unoriginal euroballad! Like 01-04!
Sounds promising, but I doubt it
France = shitsongs!
Except Patricia last year
BTW GOOD LUCK FRANCE
I DON'T THINK ANYTHING CAN GET OVER PATRICIA KAAS'S PERFORMANCE LAST YEAR. IT WAS FABULOUS
France 3 is right, the aim of a song is to be a commercial success. Great hits of Eurovision were like Waterloo (still is), Hallellujah, even Congratulations from Sir Cliff Richard is played on many birthdays. Don't understand these critisism against French Television, the only one I think wanting to win this year !!!
Something tells me I'm gonna love the French entry! I love their entry 'White and black blues' from 1990. I think this one could be similar.
