Eurovision 2010: EBU fines Ukrainian broadcaster NTU
The Ukrainian public broadcaster assured the EBU its commitment to deliver a complete entry for the 2010 running no later than Monday, March 29th. As this is in breach of the rules of the competition, the Reference Group (the governing body of the Eurovision Song Contest) have decided to impose a regulatory fine, and an additional fine for each and every day after the deadline that no entry has been received by the EBU.
Svante Stockselius, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the EBU said, "The Reference Group has the regulatory possibility to impose a fine or to disqualify a broadcaster when they are in breach of certain rules. In this case, the Eurovision Song Contest's governing body imposes a fine. This shows our commitment to the rules and has the least impact on the preparations of the Host Broadcaster."
At the moment all Heads of Delegations for each country are meeting in Oslo, Norway. Click here for more information.

@Ki.var .
Of course EBU don't want to lose a single country, even they tried really hard to the participation of the earlier countries ( Austria, Monaco, Italy, Marocco, Lebanon ( their ban is/was ended now ), San Marino, ... )!
If deadline was march 22nd... Ukraine should have been disqualified...
Once more, EBU has shown us all that money is the most important for them. Watching this year they have only 39 participants, EBU don't want to lose a single country.
For sure, next year EBU will take down their pants to welcome back the lost countries.
@ Catcher in the Rye
First of all I suggest you to ACTUALLY read the posts before answering. I never defended this selection in Ukraine, as a matter of fact I was very critical of both the first selection and the outcome of this new one. So please stop making things up and put words in my mouth?
Secondly, I'm not defending MY country, since I'm not from Ukraine.
And since you obviously did not read my posts and get my point really, I'm telling you once for all; Ukraine should not be disqualified this year if a country is allowed that have violated this contest much much more.
Does this make the Ukraine situation right? Absolutely not! But EBU can't treat countries differently.
So stop assuming things and making up things I've never said thank you very much.
What annoys everyone most is your never ending excuses for the corrupted selection of Ukraine.You can NOT show bad examples to make your country look good.Try looking at the countries that never cheat or do anything wrong.You can never do well if you look at bad ones!If you and people like you try looking up to good ones maybe we may see less events like this in the future!
I am not defending a ban ,I'm OK with the fine and Ukraine should be in this contest but at the bottom of the list.PERIOD!
@ Catcher in the Rye
btw I love how people assume I work for alot of TV stations, before people thought I worked for Armenian TV, now I'm apparently working for NTU?
What channel am I working on next? lol
Is it THAT impossible that I might just have my own opinions?
@ Catcher in the Rye
Did I defend their behavior? Nope...
go figure...
go and love your vote rigging country instead
I seriously think New in Town works for NTU!
How annoying can a person be!Whatever you say mate,won't make any difference!People will not give a crap about Ukranian entry!Everyone has had enough!
@Lina !!!
Oh, now it isn't underlined at every comment now somehow!
@Kenan mou i thing is not importand to underlined the word EBU , i thing everybody understand what i mean
@ Kenan loves Angelic
Yes, let's just hope...
If a similar case would occur again, with the same country (Azer.), I think they have proved not to be ready for a contest like this and if EBU wouldn't ban then then the little respect I have left for EBU, which is VERY little at the moment, will be totally gone and I'm not sure I would even want to support Eurovision as a contest again..
But let's hope the voting will be clean this year without any weird interrogations and stuff afterwards lol.
@Lina !!!
Now let's say 'greed for money' instead of 'breaking rules'!
Btw, why isn't the word 'EBU' underlined at your comment?
@New in Town
That's exactly what I've tried to say since our talk!
Just hope for not such a stupid act again!
@ Lina !!!
Agree, my problem is EBU aswell. Well they may be "leaders", but on the other hand if EBU were more strict with rules, we would have never had these incidents in the first place.
But in the end of the days the songs control which countries I will be cheering for, and for sure this contest would not be much without these countries - which is a weird paradox maybe based on all the drama prior ESC that comes out from some of these countries.
But you have to remember though that corruption in selections can be found all over Europe and rules breaking have not only come from this side of Europe.
@ dimitris calling
Nah, they got Monday set as a time limit by EBU but they also got fined, so it's not like they are having a new time limit without any punishment at all.
Personally I will vote for the best song and try to put things like this aside. But for ethical reasons, we'll see...
But I can still enjoy a song if it's good though. But with that said, I don't like what they did now and you know this already so.
@New in town , my big problem is not with ex soviet countries but with EBU
And i thing EBU must change precident and the whole EBU team for ESC NOW ! Since EBU is so soft with braking rules the countries dont care if they brake the rules ! But you have to admit that ex soviet countries are the leaders in ESC problems with one or other way every year.
@ Kenan loves Angelic
Then the situation would be totally different for sure. I'm not sure if I would think this would be enough to disqualify them though as song changes happened in the past, and also the break of deadline had previously happened, and even without fines. But if you think I support this, then you are wrong, I never did. I'm just saying why they can't and should not be disqualified.
In the case of Azerbaijan, I think it's very serious and should have resulted in a ban for a couple of years even. Let's just HOPE that they won't play dirty tricks this year again though. I think whole Europe should be watching them now!
Well hope the fine and this girl is worth it and they can come up with something good lol, since the two first entries were crap both of them.
For me what's done is done.I won't be voting for Ukraine no matter how much i may like their entry...They are saying now that we should wait until Monday because Alyosha's song will be impressive...They are being quite provocative...Booing in the semis night would be the best response on behalf of eurofans...
@New in Town
And what if Azerbaijan WOULDN'T do the bitchy act last year? What would you do then?
@ Kenan loves Angelic
Cowards? lol I don't think so.
I already said why I'm saying it. People say Ukraine should get disqualified, I said it wouldn't be fair this year since we have a country that violated MUCH MUCH more and is still in.
So until I see another comment like that, I will not write again. Hopefully we won't see more crap like that though.
@ dimitris calling
I never said you said they should be disqualified, but alot of people did, and then I just explained why it could not be fair this year and since you questioned me doing this, I just answered back.
Anyhow, I agreed with your proposal, as you may already now. Unfortunately this will not be the case now
Anyhow, I guess it's cased closed. They got their fine, the new pick didn't work much more fairly than the first one, and let's just await the song.
But if people would start the "disqualify them!!!" crap again, I will again answering why that would not be fair this year, no matter how tiring it may be.
But so far. Case closed, fine give, all "good"... well not really but there's nothing we can do now, eventhough I agree the right solution would have been the one you mentioned.
Well hope the fine and this girl is worth it and they can come up with something good lol, since the two first entries were crap both of them.
@New in Town
Man, make a break!
All your comments today includes smth. about Azerbaijan!
What if Azerbaijan wouldn't interrogate the ppl who voted for Armenia? Which country would you give as example then? Sorry, but such ppl like you who gives other things as examples are just cowards IMO!
@New in town
Whatever!You just keep posting the same thing.People got it!They are just not that obsessed in order to mention Azerbaijan's example every 3 min....We all criticized Azerbaijan but we don't have to mention it in every thread about Ukraine...I didn't see anyone saying Azerbaijan was going by the books and Ukraine isn't...Anyway,they won't get disqualified..they will have their way...Disqualification is not what i proposed.I said that they should be forced to send their first legitimate runner-up.Forced to do the obvious,i guess...If this was the case noone in here would be mentioning disqualification...
@ dimitris calling
So what? Obviously people didn't get it still...
EBU has no right to disqualify a country this year as long as they didn't disqualify that one, because that incident was much more severe.
Hopefully till next year EBU will start to punish countries based on their violations, but in this year it would be totally hypocritical after letting Azerbaijan get away with such serious violations to disqualify countries for less violations.
Now did I say we should not criticize Ukraine? Did I say this was not a violation against rules? Well I did not, as a matter of fact I'm kind of pissed of what they did. But still, in this year they can't be disqualified for this since a much more serious violation got overlooked by EBU already. With that I'm not saying this was correct and therefor, as I already stated, EBU should be more strict about violations in general. But they can't treat countries differently now can they?
@New in town
This is getting annoying!We all know what happened to Azerbaijan last year and we have severely criticized what they did.But this is not a reason not to criticize Ukraine for what they are doing now!No need to mention Azerbaigan every 5 min...WE KNOW what happened...Or we should just turn a blind eye and say:[i[oh well since this is what happened with Azerbaijan last year,let Ukraine do what they want,no need to follow rules......that would make no sense...
@ Lina !!!
I use it as an example, since it's probably the worst violation toward the contest ever with the least action possible made by EBU. This is way worse than change of songs by Belarus or Ukraine. Lebanon even got a 3 year ban for similar behavior, and Azerbaijan got basically nothing, so that's why I think we should not let it rest. As for JESC and EDC, I couldn't bother a bit since I don't care about these what so ever.
But remember; France changed their song after deadline 2006 and I believe the UK send their entry after deadline in 2007. Did any of these even get a fine? Nope. So the Ukrainian case is not unique, but it doesn't make it better, but I think people are a little unfair in their reactions since they obviously never cared about the others.
Also, what Montengro id in 2006 was also pure spit in the face to eurovision morals (yes, i know you are kicking yourselves laughing at the phrase i wrote). It wasn't No Name's fault, but the Tv station that allowed that disgusting display of poor sportsmanship.
Finally somebody to mention this terrible problem in Beovizija 2006!
Thanks Zohar!
I think everybody lost interest to Ukraine...No matter what they send will not impress people!
