Second rehearsal day

Poland, Belgium and Malta rehearse

While the rest of Norway is celebrating Constitution Day in their national costumes it is business as usual in the Telenor Arena. The second day of rehearsals for the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest is held today. The delegations also hold smaller scale press conferences in an intimate setting, and a bigger one when there is more media present later on. Yesterday saw the rehearsals from the first 8 countries of semi-final one, while today it is the turn of countries from Poland to Iceland.

Watch yesterday's rehearsal footage and reviews here:

Song one – Poland

The Polish entry Legenda is performed by Marcin Mroziski. The stage shines in deep blue again for this number and some lengths of fabric have been suspended at the back of the stage. The performers are wearing traditional Polish costumes. The two female dancers and backing singers circle around Marcin at the front of the stage and stand at the back for parts of the song. There are also two other ladies doing modern dance moves and one female backing singer just supporting Marcin on the vocals.

Legenda shifts between two themes, one verse and chorus are in English, while the part sung in Polish is a different bit of melody between the verses. Vocally Marcin and the backing vocalists clear this rather difficult song without difficulty.

Song two – Belgium

The Belgian entry is sung by Tom Dice and is called Me and my guitar. The performance obviously concentrates on Tom strumming his guitar on the stage, alone. He is standing at the end of the catwalk, which stretches out of the main stage and ends in another small round stage. Today Tom is not wearing the hat we recognise from his video. The stage is dark for this number, only lit by some yellow spotlights. The camera concentrates on Tom in a number of different close-ups.

Tom sings the song in a confident way and there will surely be many friends of this sort of radio friendly singer/songwriter music even in the Eurovision Song Contest audience.

Song three – Malta

The Maltese entry this year comes from Thea Garrett and is called My dream. The stage is now dark with some blue up-lighting spotlights in the background. The performance is very much the same we have already seen with her in the preview video, with Thea in a shoulderless frock with a lot of lace at the front. There are three female backing singers on the right hand side of the stage supporting Thea. We also have the bird man hiding behind Thea at first, then spreading his wings before going off into a dance of his own, with the feathery wings waving. There is some dry ice smoke used on the stage too.

Thea looks now a bit closer her 18 years age than on her video, maybe thanks to a new youthful haircut and she gives a faultless vocal performance of this powerful ballad.

@eurovision aholic and belgium stuff

To blame him for?
He's not a criminal :P ?

I don't like his voice, and I love Harel's so Harel will surely surpass them according to MY taste. It's all tastes and opinions in the end. I find Belgium boring, dull and unoriginal (It's not the first time in Eurovision, and it's far from the first time outside Eurovision we hear such a song) And I don't like the lyrics. But in fact you can think the world of it, and you have the right to do so.

1.POLAND (L) (L) Vocals are great!!Song is good and surelly not indifferent at all!!!You either hate it or love it!!!Enjoyed the folk girls as well ;)
2.BELGIUM:A decent entry not an instant catcher though...Tom is likeable and I like the "keep it simple" essence. It suits the song.It will score better with juries,I predict.
3.MALTA.Thea's voice is great but as regards the song...not a fan!The bird is ruinning it even more...

Poland - the shouting at start hurts my ears. Horrible sound and horrible song.

Belguim - This is a generic, bland singer/songwriter guitar song. Nothing original about it all. Still, it is one of the better entries this year! Should do well. Maybe a bit too average for its own good though.

Malta - A good singer and a standard ballad. Another decent effort from Malta but, again, it doesn't stand out. Her vocals are amongst the better ones though for sure.

Poland: well, I hope Marcin could qualify.
Belgium: awful, as usual.
Malta: vomitive. The idea of the bird gives a terrible point of stupidity to that forgettable ballad.

Belgium the best by miles!
Malta is rather flat, and her voice, although nice, is also annoying. Maybe she should tone it down. The bird man is irritible!
Poland seems to be growing on my by the hour!

POLAND is great.

MAlta a little bit - boring

Mon 17 May 2010 18:38:51

as for malta a very flat performance..nice song nice voice but it will be drowned between the strongest ballad this year and the up tempo albanian song...

and I am so glad that all that people can say about tom is that he is boring...that means they can't find anything else to blame him for and they found that :D !
sorry for not being svetlana loboda and her hell wheels acting like....better not say that i m not going to throw the level...!
Tom you rocked today..! the first place in semi 1 belongs to you :) ! one of the reasons esc truly deserves to be watched..songs like this..!!!

Actually three performers with strong voices. Tom is a sure qualifier. Very present on stage, and a good song! This seems very promising! Malta also seems stronger than expected. She is a really great live singer. But I still dont like the song - nor the seagull. But, when Chiara managed to qualify last year, Malta can do it again I guess.
Poland - great vocals - but still I dont see this qualifying because of the song.

the problem i have with these videos that they are from side - you don't see how these entrys will look on tv
so mayby apples in these view look ass something stupid - in point of view from tv camera these will have some meaning with face exprescion
lets wait till sf to jugde these famus apples :-)

WOW!

Blown away by Belgium - a qualifier for sure. Best performance of the semis so far. Given that it's such a slow burner who know what could happen on final night.

Marcin has a hell of a voice on him too, and it's a very distinctive song - sort of reminds me of Croatia last year. Not a sure thing to qualify, but very good nonetheless.

eurovision - aholic go belgium ! [61885]
Mon 17 May 2010 14:56:33

poland had excellent vocals from marcin (the backing singer with the black dress can do better..) and the performance fits the song...i didn't like the whole thing with the apples...quite irrelevant with the presentation...but generally good...could be a finalist..!

Marko,
Oh, I didn't notice you liked them before. Maybe I just assumed everyone disliked it, lol.

Albania
More flashy lights this time, much more than for the others, but surprise surprise - still hardly any colours despite it being more colours - how is it possible? And LOL! That mad-professor looking violinist looks so out of place and really doesn't suit this song or performance. That was not a good choice of them. Juliana sings good, but none of them are hardly moving around even though it's an up-tempo song. Perhaps they should have had a male dancer instead of that violinist man, a dancer to make up for the lack of movement to this song. I don't like the song too much. It is catchy, but it's too average. I think she will qualify though, but it best not qualify instead of other better songs.

Greece
Looks like it's going to be the lowest result for Greece in the last few years, but I think the song is rather catchy and I like it. I just think it wasn't a very good performance. He doesn't seem to have much energy and didn't sing so well this time. The dancing was not impressive, neither were the drums, but it was alright. Just an OK rehearsal I think. The lights sucked here too.

Portugal
I guess she sings well for those who like it, but I can't f'ing stand her horrible voice. That Mariah Carey sort of wannabe-vocals = vocal masturbation and screaming too much. :@ Worst and msot horrible song this year and I hope it stays in the semi. :S The stage didn't look nice during this performance either and the colours are still pale. Oh well... Nothing more to say about this.

Laila
What? :O
I always liked Butterflies! :D They are like my SIX4ONE in 2006 ! :D
But Laial I can change some opinions after rehearsals and after semis and final, not that much, but obviously I can change! :D
For example I don't like our choreography very much, I like Malta more now and surprise, Russia is better than i expected! :D :D

I suggest to read the symbolism of an apple, and then write or is it funny or not.
