Lena with Satellite
Germany wins Eurovision Song Contest 2010!
Germany won the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with 246 points ahead of Turkey and Romania.
The performer
Lena Meyer-Landrut had already appeared as an actress in various minor TV prodcutions when she entered Unser Star für Oslo, the talent search to determine the German representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010. Already after her first performance, she received much media attention and she was widely considered to be the top favourite throughout the whole show. Although she performed mainly unknown songs, most of their original versions managed to enter the German single charts based on downloads only after the performances, most notably My same by Adele (no. 61) and Mr. Cruiosity by Jason Mraz (no. 44). Lena won the national final after Satellite had been chosen the song to be performed by her out of the three she presented in case she wins.
Right after the national final, her three national final entries Satellite, Bee and Love me reached the top three in the biggest download portals in Germany. The song was highly popular and sold more downloads than any other song ever in Germany with in week and was eligible to be certified gold after the first week. Therefore, it also reached the top of the German single charts where it stayed for five consecutive weeks. The other entries Bee and Love me peaked at number three and four respectively making Lena Meyer-Landrut the first artist ever to have three songs in the top five at the same time. Furthermore, Satellite peaked at number two both in Switzerland and Austria.
On 7th May, the debut album My cassette player was released under her first name Lena only. Besides the three national final entries, it also features cover versions of My same and Mr. Curiosity. The album also reached the top of the German charts.
The songwriters
The German entry was written by Julie Frost and John Gordon. Julie Frost is a US singer-songwriter from Chicago. Her first album The wave was released in 2002. John Gordon is a Danish songwriter and record producer who has worked with acts like Michael Learns to Rock, Michelle Hunziker and German Pop Idol runner-ups Fady Maalouf and Mike Leon Grosch. Some sources credit the lyrics of the song to Julie Frost alone but the official statement says that both worked on the music and the lyrics.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch an Deutschland und Lena!

By the way, I thought Ireland and Iceland deserved to end up much higher on the scoreboard. With Hera placed 19th and Niamh 23th, the European viewers and jury's really dissapointed me!
I quite liked the Irish entry, maybe even loved it. It had that classic feel to the song that I kind of expect to hear from the Irish. Absolutely loved the instruments used, and it definitely added to the quality of the contest. It's a shame really that Niamh ended up so low, definitely undeserving too. However, I'm glad the Irish made it to the final! Niamh was just wonderful and it would've been an absolute farce if she hadn't been up there. It's a pity Belgium gave Ireland no points, I bet the jury tried to save it from televoting hell, though I still voted for Ireland just because I appreciate this style of music in the contest. It made me remember of the rich culture Ireland has, and of course of their incredible past regarding this song contest. I hope someday soon, the wheel will turn for Ireland! But you can all be proud!
Iceland, I thought Hera practically gave the viewers two flawless performances. It seems Iceland is very good at this style of music (I remember 2008 being sort of the same genre). And I totally expected it to get more points. Nevertheless Belgium loved it, we gave it the highest points of all countries even though it was only an eight. Still, only because of her voice alone they should have catapulted her to the top half of the board. But unfortunately that didn't happen.
So basically I hoped these countries would do well, cause they were two of the only ones that didn't dissapoint me during the show. They raised the bar for all the other ones. And that's what matters, and therefor I voted for them cause I also felt they actually needed the votes. A pity to see they really did need the votes. But chin up, you should all be proud!
Congratulations to Germany, but if I'm being totally honest I didn't think this song was such a deserving winner. I didn't rate the song at all, I found it to be a bit too commercial pop for my personal likings. It's good as a song aimed at the radio market but not that great when brought to us as a live performance on a festival this big. It lacked quality when performed live. There could've been a much better and definitely more deserving winner in my eyes.
Having said that, this was one of the first and only times I was one of many very proud Belgian viewers of the Song Contest while fully supporting our own song. Coming from a guitarist myself, I personally thought that − musically and performance-wise − Belgium had miles away the best song and performer. I feel we should've at least finished second, if not won the whole contest. But of course not everyone can think that way. It's a shame that because of some neighbourly voting some countries kind of forgot about our Tom Dice and his beautiful song. Otherwise we could've been second I guess. However, 6th place is awesome too! As a Belgian, I'm incredibly proud of Tom for achieving such an amazing result! He's now the best Flemish entry ever. That says it all...
But still great job Germany by winning, how on earth you guys pulled it off is beyond me, but thanks very much for our only twelve points! Although we didn't win, in our hearts Tom Dice and his guitar will always be the real winner!
I thought the show in terms of technology was excellent.
Well done NRK on what was clearly a tight budget.
You know despite all the complaints and criticisms about Eurovision, this show just keeps surpassing itself every year. I thought Moscow was excellent but Oslo was fantastic.
HD really helps to give the participants some definition. The hosts were fantastic expecially Nadia and Haddy.
The interval act was quite possibly one of the best interval acts. Right up there with Riverdance, Moscow and now Madcon.
I liked the emphasis on people in the show, but I would still rather like postcards about Oslo and Norway, because I believe Eurovision should be much about the city and the country that the audience is being taken too as well as the performers.
The shot of the performers on stage before their performance was good.
As for the winner, I actually predicted the winner of the Contest this year. But it doesn't mean to say that the Contest was unpredictable this year.
One thing you can never do with this Contest is predict with confidence who is going to win.
I thought that
Ireland
Belgium
Germany were the 3 best songs.
Romania
Serbia were nice pop songs with very charismatic performers and an eccentric haircut to boot as well
SunStroke Project, take a bow!
France - thought the song was naff at first, but it's growing on me, didn't they do well? They had a good result for once. That could be quite a good football anthem during the World Cup.
UK - disappointing result with a lot of good songs this year, we must take this contest more seriously, change our attitudes or die. Unlucky Josh!!!
Overall, I am very happy with the result of this contest. I think the songs that ended up in the top half deserved to be there.
I think neighbourly voting as an influence in this Contest is over. There may be the odd occasion that it happened but it was probably not enough to sway the Contest. Right from the start it looked as if Germany were the most popular song. Turkey looked like they were going to challenge Germany at one point, Belgium nearly did but their support faded away. Interesting to see that this has become a much more level playing field since the change to 50/50 vote and that in the last two years we have had two winners from countries in the West who had very little winning history beforehand compared to others.
Congratulations to Germany - Saturday was the day when the wall between East and West truly came down. I'm pleased for them, their first victory as one Germany, they've had to wait patiently, it makes you think compared to how long we've been waiting to win. They've had to put up with a lot over there - World War II only ended in 1989.
GERMANY IS COOL!!!
With the right backing, Lena could be a big international star. more so than anyone who's won Eurovision since the start of the new millenium.
Seeing Germany win makes me want the UK more to win! Come on BBC!!!! We can do this!!!! All we need is a song
I hear from ARD/NDR that Hannover, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin are up there. I'm hoping for Cologne, but personally I think the days of hosting Eurovision outside of the capital ended after Birmingham 1998.
Again problems with Azerbaijan and Armenia: http://eurovisiontimes.wordpress.com/
Why can'T they just stop this petty idioty?
They need to grow up!

@Whatever ... ORIGINAL ...
- you really talk a lot of shit dont you. not looking good for Greece though is it, they are slowly losing their touch. Thats two years in a row now they havent landed top 5. ouch. Then again, you cant really send a decent singer or song when your countries in such crisis.. oh wait, i better rephrase it. which singers have you got left that could "hope" to do well? Europe watch out, we may have another year of Sakis coming up.
Anyway.. Congratulations Germany on winning! Finally a big 4 country proves they can win. And also, a big well done to Turkey for finishing 2nd place. The second best result ever in Turkey's history!
Austria will return: http://eurovisiontimes.wordpress.com/
... And, as far as I know, LYRICS

Furthermore, I do not think even UK's Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber
would disagree with ...me
on THAT.

It's all about the MUSIC (or, in this case, the ... lyrics
...
At-first-listen, I liked this ROCK song
--musically-- and even said that
it would be in Top 5, for sure (which it was) BUT, you must, at least,
admit, that it is a rather ... strange ... coincidence(!!?)
with regards to those two [2] SAME ... KEY words having been used
in a way that lead up to the chorus (refrain) ... as they did for Greece's "This is our night", in ... 2009!!!!!
That's all I'm saying ...
@@Tom israel
Tom Harel was amazing...He had the most beautiful but the most difficult song also. All the fans and the news here in the country were i live(greece)said it was the most underrated song...ok he did a wrong in the high notes but it still remained the most beautiful song by far.....did you know what harel said about esc and his result??and don't say that you've learned your lesson with ballads bc israel gave as the most amazing ballads along with serbia the last years(hasheket senish'ar and milim)I just believe that it was wrong that he choosed to sing his song in hebrew and not half hebrew and half english....
BTW the biggest and best organized POLITICAL diaspora in the world is the armenian diaspora...congratulations on that but esc is not the place...

Was it "rehearsed"? What about those 1+1 ...T-shirts at SF1 ?
Was THAT "deliberate", too ????
Bad call, Norway.-
... Music and Politics do NOT mix!
and THAT ...stunt caused them NOT to QUALIFY from SF1 !!!!!
BY NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES ....
When … MISTAKES happen, things like this can happen, too ....
---- ESC First -- Even with a good song, this a Host Country
that got 20th place in the Final (again, Norway ... 5th from the ...BOTTOM)
Did Didrik deserve that? No. --- LESSON NO. 1
because
NOBODY APPRECIATED IT ....
when you did NOT … “share the moment” with other ESC Host Countries,
which were conveniently ... skipped
… as if they had never happened --
Believe me …
ESC 2005 Kyiv
---- ESC 2006 Athens
--- ESC 2007 Helsinki
--- ESC 2008 Belgrade
did happen and (comparably
) they were REALLY GREAT SHOWS !!!!!!!!!!

@feran mash
your reaction is NOT important for me!as i saw your profile, you are a turks,so i can predict what can be your reactions and comments about armenians and Armenia!
you have not that cultue to understand and feel the meaning of that piece of FRUIT!
not only you,but also all Western Europe!im not saying that they SHOULD all gave us 12 points!no!but 7th place was very unfair!
im not the only one who is saying this!all of news (not armenian) and all of fans in facebook and other wheres are saying the same (not only armenian fans)!at least,Apricot Stone should be in 3th place!
and you are stupid like many other turks and azeris who are always COMPARING THEIR EVERYTHING WITH OURS!i dont know why!why should you compare your everything with ours!
i think your victory is ONLY being in more top condition than ARMENIA!hahahaha=))))how stupid!as you mentioned " and Lena you are the one of the best with Turkey and the other first six... " you are Racist!
you must learn a lot from us in every basis specially arts and music!as we built not only your country's arts, economics, music, architect ure,...but also Iran's Azerbaijan's Georgia's....
you should learn more from us that how can you CREATE anything with your own ability!not others!(like azerbaijan, which is always paying millions money to foreign composers to write a song for their country!)
im happy that you are always comparing yours with ours!
Honestly, some people bet on country to win and when their betting don't turn out to be winner they start to moan, or some people moan because their favourite doesn't win, while they know tastes are different and the winner is the one that gets most of votes regardless of some political and neighbourly voting, the winner is always found, Germany and Turkey were the top 2, the table above (the result) is fine position, I am happy with it as always
Danny Wells
Eurovision is not about you, you don't decide winner on your own, millions of people watch all around Europe, and thats the game, no body cares if you cry or not, stop being so smart and thinking about your personal taste, you are miserable and at the same time cheeky to say Lena doesn't deserve to win no way LOL,
Germany is clear winner this year with 246 votes and thats the end of it.
