Same method as last year
Finland: call for songs to take part in the open selection
Last year YLE tried a new method of finding the country’s representative via an open selection. Since 2006 YLE had only allowed entries via invited artists and their record labels. This method is still in place, but additional entries will be allowed via open submissions. Fifteen songs from these open submissions will be placed on the YLE website from the 1st until the 15th October, 2010. Three of these will go further to the televised heats according to SMS votes from the public. The selection may even use an elimination method, but this is yet to be confirmed.
In January and February there will be televised heats, which will select a further nine entries to the national final. One more wildcard will be selected by either an international or internal YLE jury. There will be 10 songs in total in the final, which will even have a so-called super-final for the top three placed songs.
Some points from the open selection rules:
- the submissions have to be sent to YLE by the 31 August, 2010 together with the registration form on yle.fi/euroviisut
- each artist, producer or songwriter may submit a maximum of two entries the demos have to have high production standards and have vocals
- the artist singing on the demo will also have to perform in heats and the national final, but the final decision of the artists lies with YLE
- YLE will appoint a jury to select the songs from the open selection to the web vote. The exact number of songs in the web selection might change.
- songs submitted to the open selection may not be made available anywhere else until the selection process is over
Some points from the general rules:
- songs can be performed in any language in the heats, but Finnish and Swedish are encouraged. The language may be changed even after the Finnish final, but YLE will have the final say in what language the winning song will be performed in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest
- the team behind the winning song will get a prize of 5000 euros
- at least one member of the song-writing team must be a Finnish citizen
- the main artists must be Finnish citizens or have permanent residency in Finland

15 October, 2010: The three songs from the open web selection revealed
29 November, 2010: Songs for the invited artists revealed

Now, we have a time to Tango Festival. In Finland, we have had tango festival every summer since 1985. It is quite a big event. This year, we have 61 competitors in semi-finals. Finals will be in July. Winner will be invited to Eurovision selection, like Amadeus Lundberg last year.

But Nina Lasander with "Cider hill", Amadeus with "Anastacia" and Heli Kajo will be also sure qualifiers and good entries! 
I hope they go for some rock or metal next year... it's what they do best. Hanna is welcome back by me too, lol. 
I would like to see smth like Hanna Pakarinen for Finland again, I don't like rock, but Hanna and her song were AMAZING back then and I voted her! I like Waldo's ppl too, but studio version, live one sucked a bit!

Most people apparently didn't have a clue about the online vote, and so by far the best songs in that selection didn't get through (those by Villieläin and Saga Bloom), and a few crap ones did...
I don't know what should be done to improve it, but at least the online selection should be more publicised.
Karl, I don't think they'd choose anything aside from those 3.
I hope Finland goes into the final with either a song that's in English, Finnish or Swedish.
Obviously they didn't learn anything from this year's FAIL!!! Don't they get it? Who are going to vote on these songs online? Only stupid kids/teens who vote for CRAP like Sister Twister and Linn = JESC singers and not the obvious BEST choice of all - Villieläin! They should have won the whole damn thing... But instead they are placed LAST on the LAST page online and no one probably knew about this voting except kids and weird fans...
Anyway, I find the rules a little unfair and extreme... it's a little extreme of YLE to have the final say in both artist who will perform the song and in which language it will be performed in.. seems a little over-controlling to me. I would expect bands and singers to be almost scared off from submitting an entry that way if YLE could just tell them to switch singer or decide the language of THEIR song, lol.
YLE should change this method, the same for SVT.
Both of them could run Euroviisut and Melodifestivalen if they want, but disconnecting them from ESC. It's very obvious that this year people and juries obliterated the typical kind of music that Nordic countries usually pick in these events.
Only Denmark was successful, because they concentrated all the remaining vote from people/juries still like this genre. But if the Nordic countries keep this way, next year only 1/5 would be successful again.
Best of Luck to Finland!! They were robbed this year! The girls seriously should have been in the finals, they're semi final performance was AWESOME!!

I always have mixed feelings with Euroviisut and the entry that represents Suomi in the ESC..
I usually love a couple of entries which take part in the NF but they usually don't get through and the 'wrong song', IMO, is chosen instead..
However I gotta say that this year I was quite surprised with these two blonde women. I didn't like their song at first but, after seeing them perfoming on the stage in Oslo, gosh, I simply loved them!
I just hope that Finland keeps on surprising with rock or folk music; and not the typical Eurovision crap.
The only thing that bugs me is the last bit of one of the rules:

This is one country with the right attitude: the ESC is a contest, so failure in one year means try again the following year. Hardly ever does Finland moan and blame everyone else.. Typical excuses from some other countries: "Nobody understands our music", "It's because of Iraq", "Diaspora votes", "Bloc voting", "Europe doesn't understand our language", yadda yadda..
