Tweet is reason for break up

Cornald Maas fired by TROS

The Dutch commentator at the Eurovision Song Contest, Cornald Maas, has been fired by broadcaster TROS. Reason for the dismissal was a tweet message Cornald recently posted. Three weeks ago, on the day of the Dutch parliament elections, Cornald posted the following tweet: "Funny export products we have in the Netherlands: Sieneke, Joran van der Sloot and the PVV" ( a controversial Dutch political party).

Following the above tweet, Cornald was fired yesterday by the Dutch broadcaster - three weeks after the posted tweet. During a short conversation TROS told Cornald they wouldn't hire him for next year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Cornald: "The conversation only took 10 minutes. I wouldn't even call it a conversation; it was more like a short communication in which I was told I was fired. I never saw this coming and I was really surprised and amazed. They fired me because of an ironical tweet I posted three weeks ago as a private person and in my private time. It kinda worries me that a public broadcaster uses dismissal procedures like this".

Director of TROS, Peter Kuipers, reacted as well to the news: You just can't compare an eighteen year old girl to a serial killer. Cornald has simply gone too far. Of course everybody is allowed to have an opinion, but you have to stick to certain values.

Sieneke's management reacted as follows in a press release: "We have no problem at all with Cornald's tweet and Sieneke doesn't feel personally offended".

In the meantime, Cornald Maas sent an email to the director of the NPO (National Public Broadcaster): "I asked Henk Hagoort for some clarification about the general interest of our participation at the Eurovision Song Contest. In my point of view an artist should represent the entire nation; not just a broadcaster. Sieneke's Ik ben verliefd - Sha la lie matched really well with the identity of the broadcaster, but it wasn't my cup of tea and I've never lied about that. Of course I hoped the song would have been more succesful in Oslo, but I never had any high hopes that this typical Dutch folkore would do very well at the contest. I have the right to say these things in terms of my role as an independant and credible commentator", Cornald states.

omft: google (or bing, yahoo or ixquick whatever) about next definitions: racism, fascism, ignorance, twisting the facts.. Bai.

Thanks for the work, it perfectly describes Geert Wilders and his voters (you) ;)

@ ws
In the country of Toho they have an equivalent party which is in parliament since 1973. In the last elections they got 22,9% of the vote. They have 18 mayors and 1625 representatives in municipal councils.

@Tohoshinki ★..
Yep, his party became the third with 24 seats.. behind those seats are million+ dutch people and you're insulting, accusing each and everyone of them. Why you can't grasp this? :S
omft: google (or bing, yahoo or ixquick :P whatever) about next definitions: racism, fascism, ignorance, twisting the facts.. Bai.

@Purple ..,
Ok,.. maar wil je ook Tohoshinki aanraden, om geen feiten te verdraaien?

I certainly not stand behind GW. And I am sure in time the people will notice him for what he is. It is a phase we have to go through unfortunately.

@Tohoshinki
That's exactly the problem with PVV-voters.. they think their vote and their party represents the ideas and needs of the entire nation. Whereas 1.5 million of 16 million isn't much really..

@ Jan
Toho fra Siv Jensenland ?
Hehe.. lucky us she isn't our prime minister, YET :P

@ Jessy
Oh please, who are you to tell me to stick to ESC issues? Should I dispatch a mirror to you or something?

Although Geert Wilders' party is currently the third largest one in the Netherlands, don't come here and act as if you were the spokesperson of all Dutchmen and claim that the Dutch people are behind him. Again: shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame

Jessy shut it.. you were the first to start about it. I thought your message was disgusting and irrelevant, but I didn't react because of the exact same argument you're giving now.

Tohoshinki ★..,
hey, do you know definition of racism and fascism? I doubt that, cuz otherwise you wouldn't bs here about Geert Wilders. (lol why should i be afraid to say his name huh? don't be silly, i was pretty clear with PVV and G.W.)
Don't be ridiculous by tryin to "catch" me on being a racist/fascist scum.. i am not, so and Geert Wilders.. his Party for Freedom (PVV) became the third major party so stop the bs.. and pleazz do not insult dutch people standing behind him.

Once more about my as*.. well, yes its probably have been blessed (it definitely was :+)) but i can't say the same about your empty head..and in this case my advice to you.. please stick to the ESC issues cuz you even with that "emptiness" capable to do this.

Axel Kearns.. Dude! Go shi* in your hand!

Oxwned by Twitter.
Another reason to have your (virtual) mouth shut on Twitter :P.
And Twitter is just a public mobile phone, i don't see the point of it (even Facebook is more useful).

God bless PVV and especially G.W.!

Shame on you for supporting PVV and Geert Wilders, but don't you have enough guts to write Geert's full name?

Racists and fascists have no place in our world. God bless your ass.

Cornald Maas got this job because he was a friend of the late commentator Willem van Beusekom and Paul "Sakis I get an orgasm" de Leeuw. He did also quite a lot of work for the Dutch Labour Broadcasting Company where Willem and Paul also worked. As the ESC went to another broadcasting company it was not anylonger in his clique through which he got the job. Hijlco Span and Ron Stoeltie would do much better as ESC commentators. They work for their audience instead of that the audience exists for them.

@ w s

We still have 2004 left.. Cornald's era, I thought it did better than Sieneke did but I wasn't a fan back then so..

@Jan

Not that easy is it.. there are only a few jobs in the world that you can get democratically, and it's not that weird that Eurovision commentator is not one of them.

What I was trying to say with democratic, that it was anti-democratic because they fired him because of his opinions. Not because of his skills.

God bless PVV and especially G.W.!

I how many countries is the job of eurovision commentator decided by a democratic election?

@Jan 1964

So how does he got his job?

You can be against him, but the way he got fired is not democratic.

Reply : the way he got his job is not democratic either.

I want him back!

You can send a mail to publieksservice@tros.nl adressing it to peter Kuipers if you also think so.

It is unfair to take somebody's job for one mistake. An excuse about that tweet would be in order but in my opinion, this punishment is far too much. It is one of the dutch people who carry esc in their heart so much.

What do they want, dull comments without any surprise? Remember that Cornald learned from Willem van Beusekom, who was a great presentor for many years!

Forgive and forget, is the most wise thing here. I hope this will be possible.
