...best selling Eurovision artists

esctoday.com TOP TEN: No. 3 and 2

The seventh esctoday.com TOP TEN list continues today with the places 3 and 2 being announced. As announced on Saturday, this week's topic are the TOP TEN best selling Eurovision artists.

This list features the ten Eurovision Song Contest performers, who are said to have sold the most records, CDs and downloads worldwide. The numbers are based on various sources and mostly estimated based on sales certifications.

So we continue...

No. 3 - Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard is reported to have sold more than 250 million records worldwide. His career began shortly after he was discovered in 1958. In 1959, he had his first two hits in the United Kingdom and he went on to become one of the countries biggest pop stars. Over the years, he released more than 50 studio albums as well as countless compilations, many of which were certified gold or platinum. In 1995, he was the first pop singer ever who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He also remains the only recording  artist who achieved a number one position in the UK single charts in five different decades. Until 1969, he was supported by group The Shadows, who also represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975.

In 1968, Cliff Richard was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in London. With his song Congratulations, he finished second getting only one point less than the Spanish entry. There are still many speculations regarding the Spanish victory that year and it is often claimed that the trophy should have gone to the United Kingdom that year. In 1973, Cliff Richard represented the United Kingdom, again, this time with a song called Power to all our friends. He finished third.

Although Congratulations and Power to all our friends are among Cliff Richard's most famous songs, his biggest hit was the 1979 single We don't talk anymore. The song was sold more than five million times and it was a number one hit in at least nine countries.

We don't talk anymore (1979):

No. 2 - Nana Mouskouri

Greek singer Nana Mouskouri is reported to have sold 250-300 million records worldwide. She studied music at the conservatory in Athens but she never graduated as there was no possibility for her to develeop her interest in jazz music. Later, she performed with a quartet that mainly appeared in jazz clubs. Her first single was released in Greece in 1958 and it marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in popular music ever. In 1961, she had her breakthrough with her first international hit. Over the years, Nana Mouskori has recorded more than 1500 songs in 15 languages, which appeared on more than 400 albums released so far. The singer also received more than 300 gold and platinum certifications for her recordings.

In 1963, eleven years before Greece debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest, Nana Mouskouri was chosen to represent Luxembourg. With her song A force de prier, she finished eighth among the 16 contestants. In 2006, she returned to the stage as she opened the voting sequence of the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens.

Nana Mouskouri's biggest hit was worldwide was probably the song Weiße Rosen aus Athen, which originally appeared on the soundtrack of a German documentary about Greece and was sold more than a million times in Germany alone. It was later recorded in many different languages and became a world hit.

Weiße Rosen aus Athen (1961):

Tomorrow, we will show the no. 1 on the list, which might be a tough guess this week.

I am so impressed while hearing this wonderful song by Dalida (L)
and I think that this beautiful song "Ta Pedia Tou Pirea" as "Les enfants du Pirée" belong to Dalida

Mina

I suppose you mean that Dalida covered the song in french.Because it was initially written by Manos hatzidakis for the movie "pote tin kyriaki"(Never on Sunday) and he actually won an oscar for this song...

@Paul

My email address is available at the beginning of my profile, add me if you like because I would like to get your more detailed advice some time if that is ok? :) I suppose it is an avenue I should consider and your right I shouldn't just stop with what I studied, I should commit myself to on-going learning and maybe consider something to do with writing like you say because I enjoy writing as well as voicing my opinions. :)

@Angelic
well I dont know how old you are, but why not consider a career in journalism? I agree with you that social sciences is a good way to get an excellent input on life, but now you need to go beyond that...I or what is your next step in life? you write so well that I think a writing career in some form or other would be great! myself well is kind of a crazy career, I was brought up in Spain, I went to university in England (Manchester, studied journalism and French), began my career in the Balkan war!, survived that, now work for Spanish/Catalan TV..being a journalist has its advantages/disadvantages...but that's another story! let me know if u need any further advice! journalist pcl x

@Paul C

Me?? Journalism??

No I haven't ever considered being a journalist but I have considered joining politics ;) :P I studied Social Science at University and this is what encouraged me to think "outside of the box" as well as explore different schools of thought before drawing upon a conclusion about a subject. The Social Sciences are a real eye-opener! I strongly recommend people to consider the Social Sciences when taking up further education! You automatically find yourself expressing all these ideas, thoughts, approaches, methods etc it really gets you thinking about life and life's subjects on a completely different level!

Thanks Paul! It is really nice for such a Passionate Journalist to say something like that to me! :$ :)

I think I am too hot-headed for Journalism and politics :P I SOMETIMES lack "mind over matter", thats my downfall! :)

@Angelic
you're welcome re: the links, it's true he is an interesting man to analyse in some ways because of this mystery he tries to surround himself with, which, on balance, works against him I think..but as he said in his interviews "I have my fans and only care about them.." (paraphrasing), btw, you express yourself beautifully! ever thought of a career in journalism?!! :-)

ABBA will be No1 with album sales of 375 million, and they still sell 2-3 million albums every year, only the beatles. elvis and michael jackson have sold more records, a great result for a former eurovision entrant

@Paul C

Thanks for the link it is realy interesting because I had no idea he focused on such subjects. :) It seems as though he has a very logical approach to religion in my opinion. The only thing I would add to what he says is that it is usually the so-called clergyman of any religion who interpret the scriptures in a specific way to suit their own personal agenda! He drew upon very logical statements such as people justifying their deviant behavior in the name of a religious pursuit! That is so true!!

ABBA at no.1 for sure! ;D

Love Nana, can not stand Cliff Richard at all... although he had some nice songs... But I agree with Paul C, don't like those religous nutcases who try to convince others about their believe.... and I don't like "public" figures leading a hidden life because they are afraid of losing some fans.... grrr. The man lives for years together with another man but they are just "friends",.... Anyway well done Cliffie and Nana... and if ABBA has the number 1 spot, I had at least the top 3 correct.

cliff is certainly the religious type, but the funniest thing is that he lives with a former catholic priest, now thats a strange set up for a religious man lol

@Angelic
I agree with you 100%, he has every right to keep his private life: private and not to have to answer to the world about it..it's his life..but of course it doesn't stop the public being interested in it especially if you are as famous as he is..and especially when you have such strong opinions as he has..anyway before I go , here is an interview with him about his "religious beliefs" post 9/11, quite interesting , especially from a journalistic point of view!

@Paul C

Thanks for the link :) He certainly is an "Enigma"!! I suppose It is normal for some people to want certain aspects of their lives kept private more so when they are celebrities because they may feel their entire life is on constant display and/or exploited. But that is usually hard to do or avoid if you are in the public eye.

@ Miss Disco *Irelande Douze Pointe*

Re: 1968 - your attack on UK is completely unjustified - the speculation about which song should have won was started in SPAIN not the UK!

Personally I love La La La (the winner in 1968, especially the cover version by Saint Etienne) but Congratulations is a classic.

@Angelic
you are right, but Sir Cliff has always been a kind of "enigma" in his personal life/religious views..in this link he tries to answer a question that many people had been asking for years! typical Sir Cliff! and religious beliefs, well post 2001 he suddenly became a defender of other religions ..., here the link about his "sexuality"..

@ paschalis
What Alan Sorent incident are you talking about?

@Paul C

Most people who claim they are religious (of any religion) are usually hypocrites and do everything under the sun while trying to systematically control the behaviour of others by putting fear and confusion into them! Characters. Nothing more! nothing less! I am quite suprised because I wouldn't have thought Cliff Richard would be one of them. :S Guess you learn something new every day.

I'm not surprised Sir Cliff is here but I have never liked his songs or style especially after his "born again christian" stage, I'm not against religious beliefs at all, but when it begins to influence everything in your life and intolerance to others who don't agree with you then that's another question..my father (ex diplomat in Spain), once told me he met Sir C at an event and he spent the whole evening questioning everyone's religious beliefs (Sir Cliff not my father!)
as for 68 "scandal", sure was something concocted by Spanish channel 6 (left-wing, pro government channel), to criticise the Spanish winner in the "Franco" regime, I even wrote to my fellow journalist colleagues from "La Sexta" channel to "clarify" their information that "Franco had bought votes from countries such as Poland and Bulgaria"..in 1968?!!..bad journalism..!

I'm surprised that Cliff is only 3rd :S He's been selling records since 1959! And i'm probably not the only one who thinks that he should have won in 1968 and 1973 :D

ABBA are number 1 of course :D

Actually "Congratulations" is a tripe of a song. The only good thing about it is the outfits worn by Cliff and his backings. It is no coincidence that Mike Meyers choose this outfit for Austin Powers.

And when it comes to should have, then France should have won. "La source" is superior to any other song in the 1968 contest.

i said cliff richard was one.

As for 1968, the uk are such whiney bores when something wins that they don't like. (which is basically anyone other than themselves.)

Both good artists who have been in the public eye for some time :)
