esctoday.com TOP TEN: Those that didn't make it
This is the full TOP TEN:
- ABBA
...who are reporrted to have sold more than 350 million records - Nana Mouskouri
...who is reported to have sold 200-300 million records - Cliff Richard
...who is reported to have sold more than 260 million records - Julio Iglesias
...who is reported to have sold more than 250 million records - Alla Pugacheva
...who is reported to have sold 150-250 million records - Céline Dion
...who is reported to have sold 180-200 million records - Vicky Leandros
...who is reportedt to have sold more than 150 million records - Olivia Newton-John
...who is reported to have sold about 100 million records - Udo Jürgens
...who is reported to have sold 90-100 million records - Patricia Kaas
...who is reported to have sold 16-18 million records
Artists that almost made the list
Lara Fabian, who represented Luxembourg in 1988, would have been no. 11 on the list. Her sales figures are reported to be about the same as Patricia Kaas'. However, as Patricia Kaas sold more singles in countries where sales certifications exist, she probably also sold more singles than Lara Fabian in countries where no sales certifications for singles exist, which would make her total sales slightly higher.
Bucks Fizz, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, were also very close to making the list having sold about 15 million records worldwide, although the band only released five studio albums. They are probably the most successful band which was formed especially for the Eurovision Song Contest.
1969 Eurovision Song Contest winner Lulu may also have been close to the list, mainly thanks to her single To sir with love, which was the most sold single in the United States in 1967.
Artists that did not make the list due to the lack of reliable information
It is said that 1980 Turkish representative Ajda Pekkan, one of Turkey's most successful singers, has sold up to 50 million records worldwide. However, these numbers are purely based on guesses and could not be confirmed by a reliable source.
Samira Bensaid, Morocco's only representative ever in 1980, is said to be one of the most successful singers singing in the Arabic language. She was excluded from the list for the same reason as Ajda Pekkan: Her record sales, which are said to be somewhere between 20 and 200 million could not be confirmed.
Al Bano Carrisi, who represented Italy in 1976 and 1985 with his wife Romina Power and Switzerland in 2000 as a backing singer is said to have sold more than 160 million records. However, this number is rather dubious considering that is is sometimes credited to Al Bano as a soloist artists and sometimes referred to as the number of records he sold as a soloist and with his wife combined.
This concludes our seventh esctoday.com TOP TEN list. Now it is time to reveal next week's topic. It will be...

I agree Marko, Eternal wanderer is one of Russia's beste ever entries.....
I like Russian debut - 1994 Youddiph "Vyechniy stranik" more than Kirkorov's and Pugacheva's entries!
Masha had so interesting and cool dress I will never forget!
Alla Pugacheva and Sofia Rotaru cover t.A.T.u's Russian version of "Not Gonna Get Us" at Alla's last year's birthday concert

real fun
I wanna see that man that could have possobly force Alla into something - may be just her third husband Boldin
Kirkorov's just a kid in all respects to her
http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=DPOO7A_mOKQ
Well, I dunno, but it was almost beginning of their marriage, so it's possible!
Hahahaha, w s. Good one.
Sad Alla didn't score higher.
How did he force her? Did he threaten to have sex with her?
Kirkorov forced Pugacheva to participate in ESC!
Alla Pugacheva must have sold even more that 250 million records - but definetely NOT due to Eurovision SC!!!
Still wonder why she needed that!
Problems with single sales in early years are that in many countries, the sales of songs were counted but there was no difference in who performed them. As in the 50s and 60s there were many cover versions it is hard to tell how many singles one performer actually sold of a certain song.
And Gigliola Cinquetti? And Domenico Modugno?
They sold million of copies of Nel blu dipinto di blu (Modugno) and Non ho l'età (Cinquetti).
From Yugoslavia! Hmmmm...probably Zdravko Colic! I'm 99% sure!
Reliable information on sales figures in former Yugoslavia are almost impossible to get. I do believe that Novi fosili are probably the most successful ESC act from Yugoslavia, but it that just a guess based on the critic that they are given.
So true, w s.
@Paschalis & w s
OK, thnx, lesson well learned!
And most important, learn to look back in the past further then 5 years.
people should learn the difference between most popular among esc-fans and best-selling
@ kenan
No way! Doris Dragovic has sold much more. Novi Fosili too, Zdravko Colic, Boris Novkovic...
@Eurovision Lover
Zeljko Joksimovic most probably!
@ Marcus Klier
I wonder who is the best selling Eurovision artist from ex-Yugoslavia?
I can't wait to the next week!
I know a crazy one: BULGARIA 2009! Man, that was loooooooong!
next week will be interesting
Most crazy nationl final format= UK 1956 It didnt finish in time for the song to be entered for the final.
Do the 3 Ukrainian selections for ESC 2010 count as 'a format'?
Apart from this, I think the Spanish 2007 selection process was really confusing!
@Markus
just finally here in Spain...we have to stand such "crazy final formats" that even before enduring a crazy guy in our national final, we have to eliminate a "popstar queen" who was no 1 thanks to our (Crazy) Voting system...,

@Markus
hmmmm, you mean crazy like? Monaco? San Marino? not sure I understand the idea of "crazy"! apart from TVE of course!....
