....most crazy national final formats

esctoday.com TOP TEN: 5 and 4

The eighth esctoday.com TOP TEN list starts today with the places 5 and 4 being announced. As announced on Saturday, this week's topic are the TOP TEN most crazy national final formats.

National final formats that met one or more of the following criteria were considered:

  • strange/complicated/unsual voting system
  • overly lengthy process/unusual selection of finalists
  • high effort turns out to be needless

This list is about formats, so strange/unexpected results and bizarre entries, performances and presentations are not considered.

So we continue...

No. 5 - Eurovision sarki yarismasi 1975

Turkey had its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 and for the national final, the broadcaster chose a voting system that would make sure that no one would be able to be made responsible for the result afterwards...

The national selection already started two months before the actual national final with preview videos shown on Turkish television. The 15 acts then performed one song each in the national final and a postcard voting an jury voting were held. However, at the end of the show, no winner was announced. Although there was supposedly no tie, the top six were announced as two first places, two second places and two third places. The two winning singers could choose between two envelopes and one of them included the message that the performer's song would represent Turkey in Stockholm. It is probably the only national final ever whose concept intended for leaving the eventual choice to a draw.

This national final concept was no success for Turkey: Semiha Yanki finished last in Stockholm with Seninle bir dakika getting only three points in total. Turkey was therefore the fifth debuting country to finish last following Austria (1957), Monaco (1959), Portugal (1964) and Malta (1971). However, the song was a hit in Turkey.

The other winning song, Delisin by Cici Kizlar:

No. 4 - Nationaal Songfestival 2010

The Dutch national final 2010 was probably never supposed to be taken too seriously. The voting system used turned out to be not very useful and in the end, we could enjoy one of the most bizarre (and yet most entertaining) votings in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest...

Pierre Kartner was chosen internally to write the Dutch entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. In December 2009, his own demo version of Ik ben verliefd, sha la lie premiered on radio. In the national final, five acts performed different versions of the song and the voting system was kept so simple that it was meant to result in a tie: Only five points were given out in total, one by each of the four jury members and a fifth one by the studio audience. Two acts got two points each and therefore, composer Pierre Kartner was supposed to choose the Dutch representative for Oslo, which made the whole voting rather useless after all as it only narrowed the top five down to a top two. The composer refused to vote and wanted to flip a coin but eventually did give his vote to Sieneke.

The national final was no major success for the Netherlands, as Sieneke finished 14th in the second semi final thus not qualifying for the final. However, she finished eleventh in the televoting, which would have been the country's best result in a semi final since 2004. Ik ben verliefd, sha la lie was also the first Dutch entry, that was a number one hit on homeground.

Runner-ups Loekz:

Tomorrow, we will introduce no. 3 and 2 on the list.

and if the Turkish people think they are the only ones who make a quality meditteranian music they are so wrong.

@true fantasy

I can't see any Turks who said, that we are the only 1'es who make quality mediterranian music. ;)

Israeli mediteranian music is the best.

It's normal that you think so because you are an Israeli yourself. ;) lol

Axel
you mean many diaspora Turkish people liked it.....!!!
Turkey always in the top 10 thanks to this and not for other reasons.
they are lucky. but.....its kind of bitter-sweet feeling. becose the victories are not 100% deserved ones.
as we say "saved by our brothers".

Well thank God there are some people out there (thousands and thousands) that do like the Turkish entries and who support them.... We all know that Turkey profits from diaspora BUT very often Turkey sent us really great entries.... and very very often extremely undervalued in the seventies and eighties...

1975 : Seninle bir dakika (3 points !!!!!)
1980 : Pet'roil (23 points and olny 15th out of 19 )
1982 : Hani (15/18)
1984 : Halay (12/19)
1985 : Didai didai dai (14/19)
1987 : Sarkim... (22/22)
and so many more......

the Turkish girls sounds lke the chipmunks of Disney hehehe.....
anyway....Turkey had auwful songs during the all Eurovision song contests history.
i can mark only 3 good songs out of the history of Turkey partications
1997-Dinle,2003-Sertab Erener and 2008-deli.
evn this year second place was pure rubish and noise. didnt desrevd second place at all.

That first Turkish entry was robbed indeed,...still one of my all time favorites... simple, pure, well sung...great song.

The Netherlands 2010 on the 4th place! :S :S :S okay...that's mistake imo, what was so interesting and crazy about The Netherlands 2010!? :S Maybe if he composed song for smurfs like he already did :P
Seriously there were so many crazier NFs that that one!

I still love and listen "Caribbean" version of "Ik ben verliefd, sha la lie" by Marlous Oosting! She should have won instead of Sieneke and The Netherlands will get my vote like in 2006 and 2007! Plus I'm sure it will qualify for final coz performance will be different and better for many ppl! Sieneke's performance I didn't like very much, especially her clothes, GOSH :S :S She's 18, not 44! :D
In 2006 they The Netherlands also brought us some Caribbean sound to ESC, it was so AMAZING! :D I would like somebody from Suriname, Aruba, Curacao or Netherlands Antilles to participate! :D
Or guys and girls dressed in smurfs! It wil be more than AWESOME!!!! (L) (K) :D

I don't like 'Ah Kalbim Delisin', but my father told me that it was a big hit in Turkey back then lololololol and it was used in some love-films. Still, Semiha's 'Seninle Bir Dakika' was much better and really beautiful (L), and I agree with Paschalis, it was robbed!

No, I think sending Sieneke was the best choice. I wasn't happy back then, but she gave the song that innocent touch it desperately needed. People loved her, regardless the stupid song.

I like the version of "Ik ben verliefd", which was sung by Marlous.

She should have won!

I love Cici Kizlar's song. It is from a different era. Of course "Seninle bir dakika" was miles better. But for the music taste in the seventies probably too ethnic and weird sounding. It were the years of happy poppy songs.

lol those two were crazy indeed! I had forgotten about Netherlands this year.
Turkey was robbed in 1975, it's such a great song!
