Four cities apply to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2011
The following cities are in the running:
- Berlin
- Düsseldorf
- Hamburg
- Hannover
Apart from the German capital Berlin, Hamburg - which is the second biggest city in the country and the biggest one within the broadcast area of repsonsible broadcaster NDR - was seen as the most likely choice shortly after the victory. Hannover, home town of Lena, soon joined the group of the favourites. Düsseldorf, the capital and second biggest city of Northrhine-Westphalia, announced interest shortly after the victory in Oslo, too. Other cities that confirmed interest but did not submit an official application and are hence out of the running are Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich.

Berlin should be the host city despite I like Düsseldorf for personal reasons. It is a pitty Köln do not be in the race because is an amazing city.
@ arian
why won't they held it in Köln then ??
@ Julia B,
Where did you find the info?
The decision will be announced on September 15 !
@ Sam,
you're absolutely right!
@ Arian,
ESC has started in 1956 and its aim is European Unity and not promoting 'gay' (homosexual) marketing!
Arian
I think there might be some things on the list higher up than that when NDR make their final decision in September.
There's no reason why they might not consider it, but their decision may not made on that kind of basis.
The decision should take into account which city can offer the most and best gay entertainment possibilities. Berlin would be the clear winner and Hannover the obvious loser.
Dusseldorf is my favorite one, I know this city and I like the region of Northrhine-Westphalia not far Luxembourg. But I already suppose by 100 per cent that politically NDR and EBU will choose Hamburg, the region have none interest (perhaps that's why fans don't see postcards anymore between songs of ESC (ex. Oslo 2010) and it's regrettable! The EBU's aim is nowdays reduce costs of the organisation ...
As long as there are plenty of hotels and a good choice of places to stay, I don't care which it is! Although I'd like to see Berlin lol!
And me guys I hoping definitively for Dusseldorf !!! Why choose the Capital or large cities for hosting this show???
(Dusseldorf represent the whole and deep Germany, instead Berlin represent the 1989 reunification of the eastern Europe with the west, and Hamburg represent just an industrial frontwater lol)
I was definitely hoping for Berlin. I am planning to go to Germany May 2011 - and actually none of the other cities are of much interest to me...
But of course the venue does matter - at least it should be big enough so that people will have a real chance of actually getting tickets!
HAMBURG is the best choice!
If that is the case, then I think Berlin should host it hands down.
Tempelhof is suited for up to 50000 people...:
"The Hangar 2 and its adjacent room can be added to other nearby hangars, the departure hall and the ramp area of the airport. Mega-events are no limits."

oh plz make it be berlin..!! I got a cousin there and I can stay..!!
i really wanted Berlin to host, as it would be so symbolic of how the continent as united since eurovision began (plus it missed out on the last 2 german eurovisions), but if it's true that it can only host 9,000 people, i think it is too small...it is one of the cheapest and most accessible places for so many fans that the tickets will be like gold dust.
düsseldorf seems to be the only place that is big enough (but it is too big) - i hope if düsseldorf does get chosen they will put the stage in the middle of the arena, with audience on almost all sides..would make it intresting (and make it easier for fans to see the stage, unlike in 2001)
If its true that Templehof and Hannover would only have about 9,000 seats I think that they would be too small for Eurovision with the stage in.
I'm not altogether convinced by the idea of bringing Eurovision to the home city of the previous winner. Hanover has an international perception I think with all its grand architecture as being an old school typically European place, which might be perfect for show casing Hannover internationally.
Personally I thought that Berlin would have been the perfect venue if the 02 had been used. It is as big as previous host venues and Berlin could have promoted the history of the Wall in the city as a message of global peace and unity internationally. I would think it would be Bundeskanzlerin Merkel's choice. You could argue that the days of hosting Eurovision in a capital city today are gone. The obvious counter argument to that would be Istanbul 2004. Nobody really noticed then "Why is Eurovision not being hosted in the capital Ankara?". Istanbul was perfect as a romantic destination and the majority of people still regard Istanbul as the Turkish capital even though it isn't. It seems like it, but it isn't.
I'm personally not sure about the venue in Hamburg. Even though it would be perfect for NDR, there doesn't seem to be much infrastructure.
Im beginning to like the sound of Dusseldorf. I know it might be too large, but I think that a lot of people will want to go to Germany, its a very big country. I like the arena, it looks like an arena that would be used for Eurovision today. Dusseldorf is close to the border, which would make it accesible for those in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands.
My choice:
1. Dusseldorf
2. Berlin
3. Hamburg
4. Hanover
BERLIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNN
Hamburg or Hannover are my choices.Probably Hamburg due to its vibrant nightlife, atmosphere and huge stadia. Also these two places are predominantly in the NDR area.

And it will be the cheapest contest for us to go to for the last 10 years....
1999 I meant :-)
And it will be the first time since 1990 that the contest will be held in something else then a sports venue.
Berlin applied with the airport because they are desperately looking for a way to use it in the future. It is at the moment just an old, big, ugly, empty building without much use, so they try to established it as a place for concerts, exhibitions, and so on. They also can't simply demolished it and build something new there, because the airport is under protection of historic monuments. If Berlin get the ESC, the airport would be at least for a short time not be completely empty and useless. It would also help Berlin's politicians, because a lot of Berliner are not happy with how the airport is NOT used now. I really would have preferred if Berlin have applied with a better place. The airport is not the best place for the ESC in Berlin, it is just the best place for Berlin's politicians!
But there is one thing which isn't so bad about the airport. They could make a big public viewing place near the building for all those people, who won't have a chance to get tickets! If the airport is chosen, I wouldn't be surprised, if more people are watching the ESC directly outside the building, than inside!
Candyman, 2004.
Hamburg or Berlin please!!!! I think Hamburg will win and it will be the first time since ??years that the capital does not host the show!
