...most popular entries that got no points

esctoday.com TOP TEN: No. 5 and 4

The twelfth esctoday.com TOP TEN list continues today with the places 5 and 4 being announced. As revealed on Saturday, this week's topic are the TOP TEN most popular entries that got no points.

The ranking is based on a poll that was held on esctoday.com over two weeks. All 36 entries that finished last with not points were in the running.

So we continue...

No. 5 - Nora Nova with Man gewöhnt sich so schnell an das Schöne (Germany 1964)

Six singers took part in the German national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 and the winner was Nora Nova, who had had her only hit Männer gibt's wie Sand am Meer the year before. Her song Man gewöhnt sich so schnell an das Schöne, roughly translated as You get used to something beautiful so quickly, still keeps the record of having had the longest title in the history of the contest. Maybe it was this monstrous title that scared off the juries as none of them gave Germany any points that year.

It was the first of two times that Germany finished last with nul points - the second time it would happen in 1965.

No. 4 - Jahn Teigen with Mil etter mil (Norway 1978)

Jahn Teigen had already taken part in the Norwegian national finals in 1974, 1975 and 1976, but in 1978 he finally won the ticket to the Eurovision Song Contest. In Paris, Mil etter mil was the first song in the douze points voting system not to get any points. The song was still a number one hit in Norway and helped Jahn Teigen becoming one of the country's most popular entertainers. In 1982 and 1983, he represented Norway again making him the only singer to be chosen again to represent the same country after getting nul points. The only other nul pointer who returned to the contest was Téréza, although she represented Monaco in 1966 (getting no points) and later Yugoslavia in 1972. Jahn Teigen took part in the Norwegian national finals a total of 14 times, most recently in 2005.

It was the second out of four times that Norway finished last without getting any points. Previously, it had happened in 1963 and it would happen again in 1981 and 1997.

Tomorrow, we will introduce no. 3 and 2 on the list.

I think, Noras Song was too modern for those Days ;)

@Kris Kris

I hope they mastered it really well because if it's screeching voice, it must sound absolutely horrible...

Germany 1964 : well don't know what to say I don't remember it so well. It was nothing particular in my memory, but nothing horrible either.
Norway 1978 : very good song if you consider the single version, but the singer slaughtered it on the Paris stage. Shame on him for such a ridiculous performance. A totallly deserved nil-pointer.

Swedish hunk
I quite liked it, but it's such a pity Gladys del Pilar - "Det vackraste jag vet" didn't win 1994MF! It was AMAZING! :(

Yes I agree! 1994 is one of the best years. Hehe, she might have been old fashioned, but everything the Netherlands sent in the 90s was gold. I've got them as the winners of 1992, 1993, 1998 and 1999.

Great songs of 1994: Romania, Russia, Ireland, Hungary, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, Poland, Cyprus... all in no particular order. I feel like I've left a lot of songs out :D

1994 is the best eurovision year in my opinion. So many great songs, it was inevitable that some songs would fail. The Dutch entry was definitely too old fashioned that year. And it is better to say nothing about her dress.

"What a great song! 14 points What were they thinking"

I can't answer that qestion :), I can only add that the elegant and classy Dutch entry fared even worse (what were they thinking indeed!!!).

@ Shevek

Exactly! I've had Romania 1994 on replay the last 20 minutes or so. What a great song! 14 points :S What were they thinking :S It's not that different from the winning song that year, which I also like

Yes, "Vrede" is the dutch entry ;)

I see you've got great taste Togravus! Not just in 1993, but all over! Thumbs up! ;)

"Slovenia 1993 is such a happy song, but still with a bit of melancholy, and the guitarplay in the intro is awesome. I love it."

I agree, Lost and Forgotten. Romania 94 was another good song from an above average contest.

Wed 25 Aug 2010 21:09:03

Hehe, yeah, well... it's not much for the eye. But the song is wonderful. I've got it as my number 3 that year, behind "Vrede" and "Hombres"

I studied in London in 1993 and watched the contest on BBC. If I remember correctly, Terry Wogan said that the Slovenian backing singers had been 'dressed in the dark'.

Slovenia 1993 is such a happy song, but still with a bit of melancholy, and the guitarplay in the intro is awesome. I love it. His jacket, and the ugly stagecolors in that song, might scare you all off ;)
