esctoday.com TOP TEN: No. 5 and 4
The list features Eurovision Song Contest winning performers or songs that were not consideredf favourites for first place before the contest. As reliable information on pre-contest media reports is only available since the introduction of the preview videos in 1971, only entries of the last 39 years are considered. It is regarded how much an entry was of a favourite at the time it took part, so "retrospective" surprises are not considered. The following criteria were included in the ranking:
- Betting odds
- Media predictions
- Reactions by the audience in the hall and the commentators
- Reactions after the victory
- Commercial success of an entry compared to the success of other songs that year
So we continue...
No. 5 - Marie N with I wanna (Latvia 2002)
It was the third time that Latvia would compete in the Eurovision Song Contest and it was the third time that Marie N competed in the Latvian national final in 2002. After a second and a third place in the previous two years, she could win this time with her own composition, which was a song called I wonna. The song was later renamed to I wanna and the lyrics had to go through a makeover to get rid of gramatically dubious lines like I wanna you to hold me in your arms. Although the bookmakers saw it in a decent placing with betting odds around 1-15, it was never a hot favourite for victory. The big favourites that year were the entries of Germany and Spain followed by Sweden. Still, after the spectacular Viktor/Viktoria live performance and an enthusiastic reaction from the audience it started looking like Latvia could get many points.
Cyprus was the first country to vote and not surprisingly Greece went straight to the top. After the second country had voted, it looked like Malta woud take home the trophy. After Switzerland had voted, Latvia was in first place, where they would stay until the last votes were in. Marie N got 176 points in total including five sets of 12. The only country that did not wanna give any points was Romania.
I wanna was a commercial flop. The single was not even released in most countries and the song is therefore considered the least sold Eurovision Song Contest winner ever. Marie N returned to the stage in 2003 co-hosting the contest in Riga.
No. 4 - Secret Garden with Nocturne (Norway 1995)
The winners of the Norwegian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 1995 were Secret Garden with their song Nocturne, which had only narrowly qualified from the semi final. The composer was Rolf Løvland, who already competed a couple of times before winning in 1985, finishing ninth in 1987 and sixth in 1994. The song was quite unsual as it was mainly instrumental with Gunnhild Tvinnereim only singing a few words at the beginning and at the end. During the rest of the performance, the focus was on violinist Fionnuala Sherry. Few people exepected that the juries would go for a song with hardly any lyrics and a high position for Norway was not expected. In fact, some said that Norway might end up last once again. The top favourite in 1995 was Sweden.
When the voting started, Norway got the first set of 12 but they soon lost their leading position to Sweden. After Turkey had voted, Norway was back on top, where they would stay until the end. Nocturne scored 148 points in total including six times twelve. However, three countries did not give Norway any points: Austria, Croatia and Sweden. As Denmark also only gave two to Norway, this victory can definitely not be blamed on Scandinavian bloc voting.
Nocturne was no commercial success. It was not even released as a single in Norway and it did not make the charts in most countries, although it did reach no. 26 in Sweden and no. 20 in the Netherlands. However, the album Songs from a Secret Garden reached number one in Norway and also appeared in the charts of Belgium, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
Tomorrow, we will introduce no. 3 and 2 on the list.

2002 was not only the worst esc ever regarding the songs but it was also the worst hosted esc ever . It was so disorganized , the stage was small , the sound horrible , the host woman had annoying voice and it all resulted in the worst winner ever .
" Secret Garden " was sung by Fiona on Shrek 1
Ooohhhh Avat.......
Marko
No, I just can't help, but to remind you. That is all!
Ya ne zlopamyatnih chelovek, prosto u menya pamyats khoroshih
In 2001 France should have won and maybe in 2002 also but Malta deserved it more than Latvia too !!
France were robbed in 2002 (and in 2001 come to think of it). Il Faut du Temps was amazing. I Wanna is just... blaaah. Boring song and the performance was not that great either. Still don't understand how it won.
Nocturne is my 4th favourite from 1995 behind Spain, Israel and Cyprus. I love it!
Avat
It seems you will never forgive me!
1995 had 2 outstanding songs and I mean - OUTSTANDING songs. Wonderful "Nocturne" is Norway's best song ever IMO. But even better were Denmark. Me, a true ESC-fan from Norway say: Denmark should have won. "Fra Mols til Skagen" is truly a masterpiece. The slowly growing tempo, Aud's wonderful voice, the banjo
- Everything is winner business!
"I wanna" might not be the most brilliant song ever performed on the Eurovisions stage ..... BUT It was so charming and It's definitely a song I can imagine people listening to when they get silly
It's the tune , the performance and the lyrics
IT'S JUST NOT SOBER
Denmark 2000, Estonia 2001 and... Turkey 2003? May top this chart. I have no idea if Turkey weren't favorites, but Turkey never was in the history that preceded ESC 2003.
Estonia 2001... sure!!!!
'Nocturne' - Great song in my opinion, although it wasn't actually my personal winner that year, but it comes in at a very close 2nd to Spain. Still my favourite Norwegian winner though, by quite a distance.
'I Wanna' - Bleurrgh, terrible winner, although it was a really bad year overall. I thought that France was definitely robbed (for the second year in a row).
Ups! wanted to say "You undertood what I was meaning speacking about your simpathies"!
Marko
I still remember what you did this summer, ups, May

You dot what I meant!
L'amour est bleu was very succesful in Spain. There is a musician in the underground that usually plays it.
Oops, how could I have missed Eres Tu. That's part of my childhood right there.
Looking up some information on songs that charted here in the US it seems the most popular entries besides Waterloo and Save Your Kisses For Me, were actually songs that didn't win.
Ooh, Ahh...Just A Little Bit and Nel Pinto Blu (Volare) and an instrumental version of L'Amour Est Bleu.
Probably that Sweden has a hang-up on Loo´s...
Waterloo
Digeyloo
Boogaloo.
I wonder what will ppl write if Sweden was winner in 1987 with Lotta Engberg - "Boogaloo" LOOOOOOL
1996 winner worse?
OMG 1996 is the best winner in ESC EVER! "The voice" is so magical and AMAZING, Eimear Quinn is ESC LEGEND for me!
In 1997 Ireland should have won with Marc Roberts "Mysterious woman", it was MAGICAL as well!
The album is mentioned in the article...
And I am not even gonna start to discuss whether singles were still sold and bought in 1995 cause that would ridiculous.
Fom Wiki:
"Their first album 'Songs from a Secret Garden'...sold a million copies around the world going platinum in Norway and Korea, gold in Ireland, Hong Kong and New Zealand and spending two years in the Billboard New Age charts in 1996 and 1997."
If selling one milion of copies of the album is not a commercial success...
What do you remember on 2010 Avat?!? What? You willy boy?
Marcus
Please don't take it too personally.
Some people react with too much emotions. They are free to express their thoughts and ideas, even if they are not as polite as axpected. Please be the bigger man here.
As for the issue of singles selling, well, in Israel the soncept of "singles sales" never existed.
"Secret Garden" didn't sell even one single in Israel, but their CD "Songs from a secret garden" WAS a best seller in Israel.
I think they aimed for "nocturne" to be the reason for people to buy the CD and not only the single.
I believe "Nocturne" can clearly be declared as an acception here.
MARCUS - please keep doing the wonderful work you do here.
It is much apreciated.
@ Marcus Klier
In 1995, and I remember very well because I was 17 while you were still a kid, the concept of "selling a single" was just absolutely dated.
Nobody bought "singles" at that time, people bought the CD album, and "Songs from a Secret garden" was very succesful worldwide, even in Canada, USA and Australia.
Internet was not developed at that time and you can't order a simple song like now. The 90s were the golden era of the CD albums, before the internet boom and after the vinile era of 70s to early 80s (where the concept "single" has still sense).
Markus is only talking about the single's success (or lack thereof), not the group's.
Mario Mir,
STOP IT! IT'S ENOUGH! Just because you like the entry it does not mean it was a COMMERCIAL success. The single did not sell very well. It's a fact. I don't hate that entry. The article says nothing about the song being good or bad, it just tells about the sales figures of the single.
