esctoday.com TOP TEN: Those that didn't make it

The 13th esctoday.com TOP TEN list was presented this week. Now we will provide a complete overview and we will show you the entries that were just missing out. Furthermore, next week's topic will be revealed.

This is the full TOP TEN:

  1. Riva with Rock me
    (Yugoslavia 1989)
  2. Tanel Padar, Dave Benton & 2XL with Everybody
    (Estonia 2001)
  3. Olsen Brothers with Fly on the wings of love
    (Denmark 2000)
  4. Secret Garden with Nocturne
    (Norway 1995)
  5. Marie N with I wanna
    (Latvia 2002)
  6. Herreys with Diggilo diggiley
    (Sweden 1984)
  7. Lordi with Hard rock hallelujah
    (Finland 2006)
  8. Paul Harrington & Charlie McGettigan with Rock 'n' roll kids
    (Ireland 1994)
  9. Toto Cutugno with Insieme: 1992
    (Italy 1990)
  10. Bobbsocks with La det swinge
    (Norway 1985)

Winners that were just missing out

The only winning song of the 1970s that can be considered a real surprise was A-ba-ni-bi in 1978. Izhar Cohen & Alpha-Beta won for Israel for the first time without being considered a major favourite.

In 1996, Ireland won for the seventh time. Eimear Quinn's The voice was expected to reach a decent position, although another victory for Ireland was not seen as for sure.

In 2003, Turkey won for the first time. Sertab Erener's betting odds had been around 1-15 and the top favourites that year by a clear distance was Russia followed by Spain.

Surprise winners before 1971

In 1968, it was probably seen as almost for sure that the United Kingdom would win, which should make Massiel's first place for Spain a surprise, although we can't tell which position was exepected for La la la

Denmark's victory in 1963 was probably also a surprise as the song was quite different from typical winning songs in the years before.

The victory of Dors mon amour in 1958 may have been a surprise, although the juries were probably expected to vote well for typical French chansons. However, it is definitely a retrospective surprise considering the success of Nel blu dipinto di blu after the contest.

This concludes the 13th esctoday.com TOP TEN list. Tomorrow, we will continue with the following topic:

The list features three sub-rankings as each position is divided into the three categories female act, male act and duo/group.

Thank you Rost for understanding humor from the United States!

My apologies to Barbara Dex, and thank you Marcus for ignoring my typo!

As for memroable outfits....Albania 2009...she had the Big Bird look down for sure, and Latvia 2010 looked like she went though Switzerland's leftover fabric and came up with something.

As I understood, outfits to remember don’t necessarily mean bad or strange. It’s just outfits that stick to your mind or left a strong impression in the time when they appeared.

For example, I remember very well Joelle Ursull 1990, Katja Ebstein 1970, Baby Doll 1991, Doris 1999, ABBA 1974, Renato Malta 1975, Youddiph 1994 and many others. It’s really hard to create this list.

Hmm..I think the earliest outfit to cause a stir would be Ase Kleveland for Norway in 1966. Ladies were expected to wear dresses and she opted to wear a pyjama-like suit. From then onwards everyone went crazy. When colour transmission arrived so too did bright colours. As for the 1970sOlvia Newton John's dress from 1974 was huge, but forgetting 'novety' acts. Its most likely going to be Russia from1994 and the red tomatoe dress. Check how hot the guy Kevin is below!

If we are talking about strange or absurd outfits, remember Linda (The Netherlands 2000)!

If we are talking ridiculous-remarkable outfits – then there are countless nominees:
Nicole and Hugo for Belgium 73
Carola for Sweden 83 (what's with the weird giraffe??)
Westend for Austria 83 (red-yellow-green impossible horror)
Verka Serduchka for Ukrain 2007
The Romanian singers 2009 looked like survivers of a vicious bear attack
And there are Lordi, Ruslana, ABBA, Djingis Chan….. and so many more

If we are talking positive remarkable – there were some beautiful outfits.

Ethnic outfits, for me, are not considered either ridiculous or beautiful. Just ethnic.

HOW CAN YOU PICK ONLY10??

Wow! I think, there are much more than 30 most remarkable Outfits. In very early Years, there was a Dresscode, I think, but in recent Years, especially since there is an Award for the worst Dress, there are very much Contestants for this Prize.

I think the 1st 1s, we think about are the Dresses of Ukraine 2007 & Finnland 2006. I think Iceland 2006, Bosnia-Herzegowina & Andorra 2008, Czechia 2009 & Moldova 2005 fit into this Category, too. Even from this Year, at least Belarus & Lithuania have a Chance for a Prize (because I think "remarkable" don't have to mean "bad" ;). But there are so much more...

From older Years, I almost only Remember the same like the others Spain 1971 (with that Whole on the Bottom), Luxembourg 1980 (Twin Sisters with anyway horrible Dress & a Penguin)&Belgium 1973 (those great Disco-Trousers). I remember too Sweden 1993 (with the big Letters on the Jacket), Germany 1982 (maybe only Germans remember the Pointed Dress & the white Guitar...still a historical Moment for us) & Sweden 1974 (I think, everybody still knows ABBAs Outfit).

We're really going to be spoiled for choice with this next Top Ten aren't we? Everybody is suggesting something different and I keep thinking 'Oh no, I'd forgotten about THAT one!' It should be Top 100, at least - if we can stand it!

Of the Spanish contestants, the nicest outfits to remember are:
- 2010: Dani Diges, fantastic suit of Carlo Pignatelli)
- 1985: Paloma San Basilio
- 1990: Azucar Moreno, super sexy !

The worst Spanish dressed singers:
- 1987: Patricia Krauss, the sado maso mistress of all time in Eurovision.
- 1999: Lidia, wearing a ridicuolus dress of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada
- 1971: Karina, people said here she weared a cat hole at the bottom of her dress

Nicole and Hugo for Belgium in '73 !

Robert Andresen [29473]
Sun 5 Sep 2010 21:42:07

outfit to remember?
It HAS to be one of the backingsingers in Luxembourgs entry
"Papa Penguin" In 1980... He was dressed in a full Penguin-outfit..
Or U.K.s group Coco who looked like a circus-troup from cyber-space
25-30 years before cyber-space became an everyday word...

@I love LONDON

Venus' dress was great, but not for tennis! - didn't you see how it kept riding up? She was pulling it down after every single point. Just like Nadal keeps adjusting his underpants, front and back.

My favourite outfit won't feature as it didn't appear in ESC itself - it was the dress worn by Sopho in the Georgian qualifier, an enormous, undulating pink blancmange complete with raspberry-garnish headpiece. The song would have finished higher if the dress had been worn for the Contest too.
