Winner of X-Factor, potential representative

Italy might return to Eurovision in 2011

Today, the fourth edition of the Italian version of the talent show X-Factor has been presented in a press conference. As a very remarkable novelty, the winner of the show would not go through the popular SanRemo festival, but the Eurovision Song Contest! The much awaited news on a potential return of Italy to the contest might take shape towards the 2011 running of the event.

"Among the novelties, this year, the winner [of X-Factor] will not automatically qualify for the SanRemo festival (...). But the artistic director of the Festival, Gianmarco Mazzi, has promised that he will follow with attention the evolution of the talent show. It is very likely that the winner takes part in the Eurovision Song Contest", claims the website of Mediaset - the main media group in Italy, property of the prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi - quoting Massimo Liofredi, chairman of RaiDue.

The show will be aired on RaiDue starting tomorrow, September 7th, in prime time.

After this announcement, Italy might be closer to a Eurovision comeback, maybe the biggest wish of the followers of the contest. The country took part for the last time in 1997, when the duo Jalisse ended up 4th with the song Fiumi di parole.

@Lina !!!
I share your dream. :P
I hope that someday there will be a contest where every country who has ever participated in Eurovision will paticipate (including Liechtenstein's debut, if ever Liechtenstein will make their debut next year).

Italy, along with Austria, Monaco and Luxembourg, are the four former winners that has been absent from the contest in the last years.
Since 1979, it has been never celebrated a contest with ALL the former winners. If these four countries would return, we'd have all the former winners (not counting the disappeared Yugoslavia) competing together.
The difference is that in 1979 there were 13 ESC winners at the moment, while now we have 24.

For me all European countries are welcome to ESC. And i wish one day all European countries to participate ! Will be wonderfull if : Italy, San Marino, Luxembourg, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Czech Repuplic, Hungary and Andorra return or make deput ( Liechtenstein ) in Germany like Austria does :) Beacuse even and one countrey from that who i mencion is out from the contest ESC will be always uncomplete. :S

Marko,
I like SOME of the old songs (by f.ex. Domenico, Little Tony, Adriano Celentano), but most songs in Sanremo, heck even most Italian songs in general, are too slow and unmelodic for me. And I especially don't like Sanremo since they started including strippers such as Dita in their show... :P

Laila
I dunno why but I always had feeling that you liked San Remo festival! :D

I LOVE THIS NEWS! :D I hope whoever wins X Factor is a tough person who DARES to join Eurovision at all! I also like the idea of Italy returning, not through Sanremo Festival this time, but by a more fresh take on things like X Factor... I just wonder if they will get time to enter a submission thingy at all since X Factor probably won't be finished until December some time.

I hope they come back in 2011, but I also want everyone else back!

Italy have given us some amazing entries down through the years, including imo the best ever ESC song 'Rapsodia' by Mia Martini in 1992

@Paschalis
yes, probably, it's true many greeks spea italian and some very fluently, I still don't know why, I've always considered italian not an important language, the same happens in Finland too. And we usually got points from Finland. At least I can speak some finnish. Btw: about Greece, I really prefer when Greece sings in greek, it sounds much better.

I'm totally agree with some people here on this website : if Italy will not participate next year it will be a shame !!! 1) Italy has never make an effort on 14 occasions since 1997!!! 2) Italy was 'present' in the second Word War actively with Germany and after against Germany, so it seem now that Italian want to 'partcipate' in a war (some is the wars) but not in a great European song festival where each participating songs symbolize freedom and dignity simply by the fact to take part in it especially in Germany

Of course Luxembourg I mention because of their winnings..not because of their population. They have won it 5 times. How come they are out now?

I'd be happy to see my country in ESC, I think in this case 5 countrie will recieve points for sure from Italy: Albania, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine (disapora), Spain (italians would surely vote for Spain). Italy would get points from Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Albania, Malta. and at last I'll have the chance to vote!
