Armenia plans to join the Eurovision Song Contest

Armenia has plans to join the Eurovision Song Contest in the future. Diana Mnatsakanyan, Responsible for International Relations at the Public TV Company of Armenia, told that to esctoday.com. The Armenian broadcaster has already acquired the rights to broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest the next three years.
The Public TV Company of Armenia has broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest semi final and final in 2004 and has acquired the rights to broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, 2006 and 2007. "We are planning to become an Active Member of the European Broadcasting Union and further to join the Eurovision Song Contest," explains Ms Mnatsakanyan. She adds that it's not so easy to do so and that it's a matter of hard work in order to become an EBU Active Member. The Armenian Public Radio and Television had made a first small step towards the Eurovision Song Contest in July 2004 when it became an Associate Member of the European Broadcasting Union. However, only Active Members can participate at the Eurovision Song Contest. EBU currently counts 52 Active Members, 40 of them will participate in the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest.

As Armenian I can say that the main problem of membership is that as APTV announced the broadcasting borders of EBU is western from Armenia and that borders should be changed on 2007, so before that date APTV naturally can not become memeber. Regarding money I think that TV company that buys broadcasting rights is able to collect a bit more money and to take part in the contest.

to:What will the neighbours say ?

well, there is no harm to add 3 other countries and specially culturally rich countries. I agree with you if the boundary ends after those three countries.

We get the idea Jean :) But it's great to see Eurovision moving outwards, and if it means *some* certain countries loose interest, it's even better :D

Singapore 2010 :)

I really think that this is such a bad step for eurovision!
Where does the boundary end? Where does Europe end and asia begin that is the question? It will just get to big and explode in our faces! I just don't believe Georgia, Lebanon or Armenia are part of europe for me I consider that Asia and its not a world contest its a small humble sort of professional EUROvision song contest!

...ok...i'm not being funny or anything because I fully support new countries broadcasting/showing interest in the song contest we all love. I just wonder where the boundary will be for potential entrants? as one new country takes part, that countries neighbour may want to take part, and so on and so on. Maybe there could be 'guest entries' taking part from places out with the core Eurovision land, and the EBU rotates them? Maybe it's not ideal, but at least it's fair as Eurovision territory can't strech on forever. Eurovision; victim of it's own sucess? Time will tell.

:)

Armenia was planning to enter ESC for 3 years now, and they do broadcast it on a regular basis, the only problem is their EBU membership.
I would be among first welcoming Armenia as I have heard absolutely perfect Armenian singers at Voice of Asia competition.

First of all : these are GREAT news - Armenia and also Georgia belong to the ESC IMO. I hope to welcome both of them as soon as possible :).

Like someone said before - it s not a question if the country is rich or poor, it depends on the broadcaster. It has not only to be able to pay the EBU fee but also to select and - if it takes the ESC seriously - to promote the singer/song. It s not as easy as it sounds - especially if we remember last year, where Luxembourg and Hungary withdrew from the ESC because of " finnancial problems ". And they aren t the poorest countries on the planet ;).

John Redpath - It is not the matter if the country is poor or not, it is only the matter whether the TV broadcaster is poor or not.

Am I missing something here, what is the big deal with entering the ESC, surely you either enter or not...........why all the maybe we will, maybe we won't, I can't believe that these countries are so poor that they can not send a singer to sing a three minute song.
I have never heard any Armenian music so I will have to take your word that it is all beautiful...........is all German music beautiful?, is all British music beautiful?, no some I like some I don't like, or is all Armenian music the same, I doubt it!!
