Eurovision 1973 online for the weekend

Today and tomorrow, you can watch the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest online at EurovIL. This feature is made possible thanks to the EuroJoint alliance, a cooperation between EurovIL, oikotimes.com and esctoday.com!
The 1973 Eurovision Song Contest took place in Luxembourg's Nouveau Théâtre Municipal on 7th April. In the show, hosted by Helga Guitton, 17 countries took part. Each country had two jurors present in the hall. Each juror awarded all songs with a score between 1 and 5, so each country gave all other countries a score between 2 and 10 points. Malta decided to withdraw after two last places and Austria also didn't participate. The first non-European country, Israel, made it's debute. As member of the EBU they were allowed to do so. They achieved the 4th place in their first contest. The Swedish group "Malta" changed their name because it could be confused with the island Malta, although Malta didn't participate at the end. For the third time in a row, a French-language song won, as it was host country Luxembourg that took victory again. The voting system with the two jurors was used for the third and last time, partly because a juror from Switzerland was trying to 'steal' the show. The first female conductor stepped on the Eurovision Song Contest stage, this time for Sweden. The usage of the native language was not obliged anymore. More information about the 1973 contestants can be found here! You can find the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest in the multimedia selection of our EuroJoint partner EurovIL. Enjoy the show!

How could it be that Nicole & Hugo came last ?

Even today this song stands out.
And Finland acheived their highest placing with their worst song!

The mysteries of the Eurovision ;)

By the way I've seen the contests from '57, '69, '70, '74, '75 '77, '78, '79, '80 and '82 lasts months and on the contrary of what some people here suggest there is no neigbourvoting, at least not in the way that it's common today.

The UK jurors didn't award Abba and Sweden any points in 1974 I suppose that was direct retaliation against Sweden and the 1810-1812 Anglo-Swedish War. If only we could get hold of the Government papers relating to the votes.

Biased jurors? That's a bit of a big leap logically! We're watching the contest 33 years later after living with these songs for a long time, on the night the jurors heard them for a couple of times before and voted accordingly. To accuse them of being biased especially to say that they were angry that Spain had beaten the UK in 1968 and voted accordingly is far fetched to say the least! I don't think many in Spain would suggest that.

I cannot watch the stream on my Mac... will anyone ever think about Mac and Linux users? We're not a minority anymore...

Erm, it's a two way street.

In 1971, the Spanish gave the UK the minimum despite the fact that the UK finished 4th. In return, the UK awarded 7 points to Spain, who finished 2nd.

The next year, the UK awarded 3 points to Spain, and Spain awarded the UK the minimum AGAIN, receiving 3 points from the UK in return.

In 1973, Spain received 4 from the UK, and gave the UK 4 in return.

In total, the UK gave 14 points to Spain, and Sapin gave the UK only 8 points. So it would seem that the Spanish judges were worse than the UK jurors were.

Very interesting...

The 1973 contest illustrates that any voting process can be tainted by biased jurors. Look what happened to Spain. While most countries gave them high marks, only three coutries, among them the UK, awarded Spain only 4 points or less. Had the UK jurors had their heads out of their butts, they would had awarded Spain more points, and Spain would had won, the way it should have been. Who knows, maybe they were still upset about La La La losing to Congratulations in 68. And yet again , UK placed right behind Spain. Amusing.

I must say, it was a very very nice contest, but it's the (tragical) wonder, why Belgium had finish last. I think it was one of the best songs. ( also ireland, Luxemburg and Spain)

I had never seen this show before and I was suppries how funny it was :) My favorites where of course Eres Tu - but I agree for the most on the top - Finland had a very good song this year, so did UK, Israel and Luxembourg. But Spain should have won for sure. Also I was very surprised to see the norwegian song doing so well ;) the swedish song this year I had never heard before and it was great I think :) very good. A shame Switzerland didnt do better - that was a good song as well :)

I loved the clown in the break . I had a good laugh when I saw the interval act ;) hehe. eventhough I prefer the interval acts of today better than then...but it was still funny ;)

And the voting. we should have that kind of voting back again - I think it would be more fair if every country gave points to ALL the countries. Or just ranging ALL the countries from 1st to 24th in the final - I am sure that Norway wouldnt have come last so many times if they had done that every year.... ;)

1973 again....I have been watching this last year already, wouldn't it be better if you show some other years instead, for example 1996? Or others that you didn't show last year already.
But I have to admit in 1973 there were some great songs so it was a great contest that year. My favourite was Power to all our friends, fantastic song. Shame it didn't win.

You are completely right, w s. That book is not an official history but an official FAIRYTALE of the ESC.

Adrian B. the new version of Tornero is amazing - I love the more upbeat dance track! I could do without the yelling part in the beginning, but what a smart idea - it will for sure get the viewers attention! And if the stage show is anything like the video, then it's going to be quite the show!

Hi there!!

Delighted to be able to finally see how the scoring system with the 2 jurors worked as I didn't quite understand it. I think it s a shame that more previous contests are not shown like this on the net since we have all this technology.
