They should put all the shows on DVD, then you can buy your favorite contest.. Mine are 87 to 92. great memories

1989! The year in which i ebcame a fun of the ESC! Not very fanatic but ever since then i watch ESC every year! Back in 1989 i was 14, with a brand new VCR at home, i taped the competition, i kept statistics on the leader bord, the first gothering and the "pizza" party with friends!
Although i believe that Yugoslavia won as it was drawn to perform last, it is still a good song. I prefered Spain that year or Italy. And Austria had a good entry!
It is amazing how much the ESC changed over the years. At least, since the originality of each country eclipsed since everybody sings in English, we can consider as positive, that things are more even now, and even ARMENIA (e.g.), or Poland can be favourites to win!
Oh dear, I found it difficult to watch this year's entries after re-watching the 1989 contest. It's a shame how the quality has dropped in many respects. Although having said that, that period 1987-1993 represents, IMO, the "golden age" of Eurovision. It had moved on from the tackiness and cheesiness of the 1970's and early 80's, but had yet to become the pure TV spectacle that it is now. 1989 and 1990 are far and away the contest's best years. In 1989 there are only THREE songs I don't like (Norway, Greece and Cyprus) - must be a record. Spain - what a classic, Austria - brilliant, Sweden - Eurovision at it's best.

Spain was far the best entry in 89. A song you sill can listen today without thinking that its 16 years old !!
After seeing the Israeli and French kids I see where the idea for the horrible Junior Eurovision came from. Thank God they stopped children in ESC!
I couldn't get over how bad the male presenter's accent was when he spoke German. It was held in Switzerland for heaven's sake ... surely they could've found some one who could speak German without that heavy French accent.
Watching these old contests makes me thankful for what we have now. ESC today is exciting, young, lots of audience reaction... not like these polite, middle-aged, slow contests from the past.
I agree Annika, personally I found the 1995 contest the most boring in terms of production, stage design, songs, presenters etc

I suppose it was a ridiculously long intro...I didnt understand the little boy theme, didn't Roma 91 have a longer intro though?

Oh, please realise that "Dzuli" in 1983 was from Montenegro and that is a fact.

Because it dragged on and on and on. It has the record of the longest intro. After more then 20 minutes the first competing song was performed. The male host was awful. The winning song was tacky. The stage was boring. The children from Israel and France were annoying. Need I go on? The Dublin contest before it and the Zagreb contest following it were both much better.

Great contest! although it took forever to start! what was that opening sequence all about?? UK should have won with Italy 2nd - Good production from Swiss TV, the set looks the same as Dublin 88 and Zagreb 90
oh my god - it took like forever betweeen each song - the introudction felt like lasting several minutes.... many good songs though. I did not like the interval act that much. The voting was very strange this year - and it was by far not the right winner. UK should have won with Austria in 2nd and Finland, Portugal, Denmark, Greece, Germany right behind....many good songs. Surprisingly good were the ones from Finland and Portugal.
I really dont see what the big problem with the voting sequence today should be. It has always been so fast and effective before...the voting was over in a sec this year. Are the spokesperson so desperate to get their 3 minutes of fame that they really need to drag the voting out to forever today? With the same efficiancy as in the early 90's - meaning before the satellite transmissions started the voting would have taken at least maybe 20 minutes less than the last couple of years.... and we could still have the old way. Maybe we should put an end to the satellite transmission and go back to the good old phonetransmissions? that would surely have shortened the time alot...
I am for a rule that punish countries where the spokesperson drags out the time... even though they won't announce the 1-7 points this year I am sure the spokesperson will use MORE time to talk about everything else than the points this year ....it will drag just as long as before

All representatives of ex Yugoslavia had the old flag with the red star waving which clearly indicates what country they represented. Thereby, I guess, they had the final word.

u can found here all croatian entry (from 1963 to 2003).. and there is also Daniel with song "Đuli". So from 1963. to 1990. Croatia had 11 entries ...

Well, both the Dutch entries of '89 and '90 were far worse live than the studio recording. Why strip them down so much?
And Italy 1989 is a fantastic song, perhaps to complex for the main audience - but still great.
