Together we are...seven!

Seven on stage for Latvia!

The fourth country to rehearse today was Latvia, and the vocal group Cosmos with the song I hear you heart. However in a song that you possibly thought couldn't have a gimmick, an additional member makes an appearance on stage. This is a small puppet figure that joins in towards the end of the song, assembled from what looks like a folder and microphones! The whole effect is quite amusing, if a little bewildering. As a song that largely relies on the vocals, it was not surprising that a lot of time was taken up with the group getting the balance right with their microphones, as well as vocally warming up before their run throughs of the song. In the rehearsals the lighting was mainly an orange colour, with the wings of the set moving up and down quite a lot.

It was just the six members of the group who faced the fans and journalists for the press conference, and it was vocal treat for those present.  There was much more singing than there was questions, and appropriately enough the first piece of music was the theme music for the Eurovision network Te deum. There then followed a request for a Greek song, so the audience was treated to Goodbye my love. Further songs were the Michael Jackson hit Billie Jean and they ended up with another European anthem, Beethovens' 9th Symphony, also known as Ode to joy.

Are you satisfied with the first rehearsal? "Yes, the sound and lighting engineers are very good and we are very happy that everyone does their job very well".

How did you all meet? "We all came from boys' choirs, and that's how we met. We then wanted our own small choir, and then tried something a little bit different, and then we tried pop, so we are not a boy band, it was a natural compilation that brought us together. We think that this is the first time an a cappella song has been in the Eurovision song contest, and it is very interesting for us".

Latvia has done very well in the history of the contest coming in the top five, in three out of the six contests. So, how important is it for you to do well on Saturday? "We hope to do our best, and that the people will like us. It is important to have a nice evening, a celebration of a love for music. For Latvia it is very popular, almost half the population will watch, so its very important to be good".

How do you choose the songs you perform, do you compose? "We do both our own songs and cover versions. This song for the contest was composed by two of the group Andris and Reinis. Our goal is to make music with no instruments".

Do you have any favourite Eurovision song contest songs from the past? "Diva" and "Sanomi"

How did you come up with the name Cosmos? "Well it is a Greek name (Global), we liked that fact, with different styles of music, and it's classical and academic. We can do pop, funky hip hop. We have no borders, direction. So, that is the connection".

You have a seventh performer on stage, which could be said to break the rules? They jokingly replied:  "Well he is actually our virtual manager, that walks on stage with us, you can't call the doll a man...just like our manager!"

The six performers of the group Cosmos, together with their virtual manager will return tomorrow for their second rehearsal at 12:30

Hey!

There is no point to argue about something what we don't know. Just in the final we will see how much points Latvia will get. In my opinion Latvia again will be in the top position because this year's song is something really new and well-done. Buit I do not press my opinion to everybody.

Good luck to Latvia this year and I am sure - this year TYou will get a good position!

I think that Latvia is very talanted this year!!!
And it`s realy sad 2 read comments here like some ppl writing!!!
I`m personally am from Ireland, and I have few ppl from Latvia in my college, and I can say dat they r one of the most smartest in the college...
Education in Baltic and post-soviet countries is the best in Europe!!! No doubt on that!!!
People from developed coutries, u better spend some more time on books... before commenting on developing countries like that! We 15 years ago were one of the poorest countries in europe, and now we are the richest! Just watch on that one, may-be in 15 years time u would have 2 protect ur coutry, like latvia protecting hers!!!
Everyone has a right 2 vote 4 who they want!
And inga inga was right, that coutries which are neighbours have the same tastes, and nothin else.... 4 example u people from Greece, Cyprus and all other countries, have pretty same tastes in music! Latvian songs are always good!!!
And if u r saing dat Baltic countries voting only 4 each other, what about Estonia and Lithuania last year? They didn`t even get through semi-finals!!! Because their song wasn`t good and they didn`t put too much effort in it!!!
Latvian song last year was way better than Greece, and these year as well!!!
U greece have enough neighbours 2 vote 4 u as well!
And there is no need to say dat much rubbish about countries if u just do not like the song.... if u don`t like the song, simply don`t listen!!!
Latvia 12 points 4 u from Ireland!!!
Don`t get sad ofsome stupid ppl from developed coutries, u`ll b rich very soon, with ur effort!
I`m very sorry about that!!!

Well, it is sad sometimes to read people comments, especially here...we should remember only one thing, ehich is most important in this contest - the music and the power of the music, which can unite not separate people...of course each year it's possible to speak about votings between neighbour countries...but probably let's say: whatever...each of those performes going on the stage are showing the best they can do, and if someone wants to say that he or she looks ridiculous or bad or...then should remember that those people do what they like to do...and we mostly like to take a look at them....

for me, probably none will agree and like my opinion, this years best song is Iceland - it's nice, has a good rythm and can catch the attention already after first moment...
about my country's representatives - cosmos - these guys for sure know how to sing and their live performances always have been very good and in a very high proffesional level, so EUROPE...forget about stupid stereotypes and just enjoy good music....I hear your heart! :)))))))))

paprica 453

I think you've just said something that can't even be masticated. What's this having to do, with discussions here???

Soviet-style convenient "republic"...what the hell is that for???
Fresh meat and bear coats??? It's about what???

And word "primitives" I even don't use to describe dogs. I think that sentence showed who needs some education. It's a pitty you haven't put your age down...I would like to see if it is adult who has that kind of thinking in 21th century, or teenage, who probably has some kind of self-express period. In fact honey, I have no time discuss your level of education and I am not going to do that with a person who is convinced that he is more HUMAN than others.

Paprika, u sound really arrogant and incompetent. Despite weak economical situation, education was on very high level and ex-soviet "brains" is something of very high demand - check some companies (in Switzerland too) and you'll be surprised, that people from countries with 1.5-3 mil population manage to get that high.

And if eurovision is so primitive, what are YOU doing in this site?

You are making a fool of yourself. I'm not saying some of the people here posting ridiculous comments are any better, I'm just saying. Talking 'bout poor nations, primitives and nothing to show makes you look even worse. Mind my words.

Come on! Who gives a damn fcuk on latvia!
0 points this year.

paprica 453 [32726]
Tue 16 May 2006 11:18:49

I feel for these countries.
Really
These poor nations have nothing else to show except Eurovision, have they?
They expect Eurovision to be heard a little more in Europe...
Poor primitives
This is so PATHETIC.

Paprica 453, look who's talking!!! You are just pathetic.

Inga Inga
from your answer seems to me that you up there still live
1) Like primitives. In caves and wearing bear coats eating fresh meat round the fire...
2) You still have a soviet-style convenient "republic"

I really feel for you!

Cold play

Well...good for you. I just hope that not all Greeks at your age are such feebs, it would be a disaster for Greek nation. And next time when you have nothing to say topic related, just keep quiet, it will spare people eyes and minds from reading your personal abuses.

P.S. Maybe someday you could save some money to learn better manners, otherway it wil go just worse.

COSMOS!!! You are the best!!! And not because of the song or your voices (all these things are alrady understandable), but because of you uniqness this year...it is something very new for eurovision, and I love the fact, that you are the ones (from LATVIA) doing it!!!!! God be with you!!! YOU HAVE MY VOTE!!!!

I didn't call you names but I guess that's the kind of education you receive at school(if you get any!).I'm convinced that your country receives the most votes from the ex - USSR countries and I don't think you'll ever be able to convince me about the opposite. The same thing applies to the ex-Yugoslavia states but I won't bother dealing with you any longer. Your head seems empty to me and I cannot stand emptiness.. May God help you in the future. You have my sympathy...
